Appreciate the knowledge you’re dropping in this vid, Vince! This is my second fall/winter season of perch fishing and I have been frustrated with tons of bites/nibbles and barely any hook ups. This vid has been an eye opener for sure. I’m definitely trying this out next time and reporting back! What are your thoughts/observations on rigging paddletails with the hook point facing up (opposite direction of the tail) vs facing down (same direction as tail)? I know some do it facing down but does it make any difference?
@frankrandise14872 ай бұрын
I’ve noticed surf perch tend to favor the motor oil FlipFlop the most. They’ve also consistently gone after the Gulp red sandstorms. I’ve heard amazing things about Battlestar soft candy too.
@VINCEGOESFISHING2 ай бұрын
Thanks for asking about rigging the paddle tails with hook point up or down. The truth is... when you drop the bait in the water, the weight of the hook tip will point the hook tip down. So it doesn't matter if you rig the bait upside down or not. Fish will still eat it either way. Unfortunately, the hooktip will be pointing down due to center of gravity, and that does cause some problems for us, so actually Battlestar is already working on a new perch hook to solve that problem. Stay tuned for the new Battlestar Perch Hook

Great tips. What wave power range is ideal and when to avoid fishing based off wave power?
@VINCEGOESFISHINGАй бұрын
I generally don't go fishing in anything bigger than 4' height or 500kj wave energy as forecasted on surf-forecast.com but also consider what angle the waves are coming from cuz if they are coming from north, then the south side of a point will be protected, smaller, and probably fishable. If big waves are coming from the south, check the surf-forecast on a north facing beach.

Great content as usual. Have you ever done any testing on scents? Most people I hear say they dont do much for surf perch. I recently got some Pro-Cure Sand Flea gel... maybe I've been luckier but it seemed to help. Didn't hurt. What say you? My area of surf fishing is in the Erendira/Punta Cabras area between San Quintin and Ensenada.
@VINCEGOESFISHING2 ай бұрын
I haven't spent much time trying scents for perch. When they are biting they don't seem to be picky at all. But maybe I'll use scent on the Battlestar Hardcandy when it comes out. There is a small slot in the body it will work perfectly as a reservoir for some gel. Sometime's it's just more fun to use scent :D

@@VINCEGOESFISHING We visit Roger at The Tackle Box in Salinas! If you go north, you have to visit Tom at Coyote Bait & Tackle just south of San Jose. There is a small tackle shop in Sand City above the auto shop at J&D Auto repair. It’s cute and the owner is fantastic. If you come out, maybe we can collab with out family friend HBB8s and get him out here again. There’s a fish contest in the springtime, Sand Crab Classic that you should get involved in up here. 🎣 It’s a perch tourney!!! Come out and play!!!

great video... how much does the pole length matter? I travel by car so if I'm using a 1 piece pole it needs to be 7 foot or under. It looks like your 10 footer is a solid 1 piece, but I might be mistaken.. Surf fishing southern California, Cali-rigs and jerk bait, any advice is appreciated..

Awesome video my friend! I'm in Washington state now so I may try seeing how the Red Tailed Perch bite with Toui's baits at a med/fast speed! That was epic buddy. Do you find the best is best with more or less cloud cover? And do you feel like direction of swell matters? I remember in SC if there was a south swell it was always terrible fishing for some reason
@VINCEGOESFISHING2 ай бұрын
I'm very curious to see if Red Tail can be caught up north with this same technique as BSP on central coast. Also curious to know more about the swell direction. Cloud cover makes no difference for BSP. I catch them under clear blue skies, or foggy, overcast, any sky.

Hey Vince , enjoying your videos. My question is what lb. Test are you using for for your leader and what size weight?
@VINCEGOESFISHING2 ай бұрын
Hi John, I’ve been using 15lb mono, or 12lb copolymer lately. I’ve used 10lb, and up to 20lb with no problems. So it doesn’t seem very critical. Anything 10-20lb test ought to do. But I think I prefer 15lb. Btw it’s a full wing span length so about 5’6” long. I like my 1.25oz lead egg weight, or my 1oz tungsten. 1oz does the trick when the waves are small, not too much current. 1.25oz gets it done even when it’s a little bigger. I used to throw 2oz it wore out my shoulder, so did 1.5oz so I found 1 or 1.25 is about perfect for me, and I can cast this much weight with my rod which is actually only rated to 3/4oz 🙊

Great info! What size split rings do you use on the Battlestar?
@VINCEGOESFISHING2 ай бұрын
I use the stock hooks and split rings on the Battlestar. Until the hooks need to be changed, then I change the hooks and continue using the stock split rings. They are Stainless steel and the measurement is 4.5mm*0.8mm. I've never had a problem with em ever before.
