As a Tennessee fan, I'm grateful for what Coach Saban has done for football and the SEC! I'm really sorry that Tennessee was going thru such a difficult time during most of Coach Saban's tenure. The Alabama/Tennessee game has historically been a barn burner, and the 2022 game was one of the best games ever, and either team could have won. The 2023 game was a little different! Good luck Coach!

I'm a die hard Auburn fan, but Nick Saban is by far the best college coach both in his integrity and commitment. Some may say that Bear Bryant was the greatest coach, but there were some shady things he did...for example, he would have upwards of 150 players on his team, not that they would ever play, but that they would never play for other teams. Saban on the other hand has consistently won with far more rules and restrictions.

he retired because the landscape of college football is changing. the NIL deals, transfer portal, super conferences, and expanded playoffs. the grandfather coaches (Paterno, Bowden, and Snyder) all they had to do was finish the regular season, win the conference championship, and an additional bowl game. all 3 of those coaches had a serve decline in their 70s. like Johnny Carson said it’s better to go out on top and that’s what Saban is doing.

@jtavegia58459 ай бұрын
I think given his age and the new NIL initiative it is going to make recruiting and retaining great players much, much harder. Plus, always being expected to be in the national playoffs has to be a heavy weight on any coach and so little needs to go wrong to blow all that up. You also can't count on your key players to be around for 4 years, and if they intend to go into the NFL draft, even playing in the upcoming bowl game doubtful, which makes the potential for winning even harder.
@DrBlood-cq2cm9 ай бұрын
I believe in 25 years, we will look back with disbelief at what Saban and Belicheck did during their times in college and pro football, respectively. Parity among teams is increasing every year. Good lord, even the Detroit Lions are in the playoffs.

@rickdixontn9 ай бұрын
Nick Saban was a great football coach and a true leader of men, that much is indisputable. But his secret to success was not that he out coached his competition. It was that he had a roster with more talent and depth than almost every team he played. Since 2008 Alabama routinely had multiple 4-5 stars at each position, 3 rotations deep waiting to play. Alabama simply had better players and would wear their opponent out. How Saban could consistently recruit at that level for 15 years is remarkable. Kirby learned his secret and applied it at GA. With NIL and the transfer portal, Saban could no longer assemble and maintain that kind of roster and he knew his unprecedented dominance was ending. In the NFL no team out recruits their competition and Saban was 15-17.
