There are endless home decorating videos on KZbin and I've seen a lot of them, but Nick takes it to the next level by really explaining just the right amount of theory behind the subject. I think his accessible videos are just as informative as studying a formal class on the subject. Well done and many thanks Nick!

That's really sweet. It's always nice to see nice comments on You Tube. God bless you and your sister. And Nick has some great videos, no? I finally bought a condo two years ago and work at sea on a ship. So while the pandemic was going on I asked my mom to coordinate renovations and they were fully complete by the time I was able to return home. So now I am addicted to design. I never thought a merchant seaman would be this much into this stuff, but here we are. haha. Take care!

My sister was a designer. The only thing she shared with me when I asked her how to go about designing my dream house was, "draw circles." It wasn't terribly helpful. My kitchen turned out to be as big as a McMansion. But I had lots of counter space ... And a really big pantry.

I always pick tones, especially lighter ones, most colors in nature are tones, as are historic paint colors, because they only had natural, mostly mineral, pigments to work with. I’m a geologist and pick paint colors colors from my GSA rock chart, they’re guaranteed to be easy to live with and work well with each other.

I did something a little unexpected about 5 years ago (at least in my circle of friends); I painted my livingroom walls a marsala type color (mine was actually called sweet tea). I like boho and traditional so the darker color was a great backdrop to neutral furniture, earthy woods and rattan type vibes. I kinda flipped what people usually do. Friends were skeptical of such a dark color until they saw it. Then they loved the warmth and richness and how it worked with my style. Sometimes you just gotta go for what you like.

Testing a sample is SO important. We painted the walls of our otherwise all-white kitchen (south facing, looks out on our treed yard) apple green. It's crisp and cheerful. My friend's son loved the colour and wanted it for his bedroom. They tested with our leftover paint and in that north facing room with hardwood floors, the colour looked brown and dingy. The difference in the light, and in surrounding materials, had a major effect.

Nick, what I love about your videos is that inwoven with all the fun and silliness, you actually are a wonderful teacher. You never think anything is over our heads, and you take the time to explain design concepts in ways that we non-professionals can understand and implement. To date I haven’t come across another KZbin channel whose content creator truly respects the intellect of their audience as much as you do. I know you’ve taken some guff from those insulted by you having articulated your personal design distaste - especially when they perceive it as an insult to their own aesthetic preferences. I don’t - because I doubt there’s a person alive who adores every style that’s come along - you included.Not liking a design element or style doesn’t necessarily make it bad design - just not in alignment with our personality. Since our design preferences are reflections of our personality, that’s likely why people take your cringing and ribbing so personally. Anyway, I just wanted to express my appreciation by way of rebutting the naysayers. This video is 2 years old, but its succinct instruction is timeless. We’re the better for having you here for us! 💖

Hi Nick, I was watching your home tour video with Karin Bohn (loved it, by the way) and I was struck by the discussion that you and she had about whether to concentrate an accent color in one spot or to scatter a few other items around the room with that color. In this video, you talked about the rhythm of repeating textures and colors, which seems like a strong counterpoint to Karin’s philosophy. I wonder if you wouldn’t mind touching on these two points of view in some future video. Best, Mark

Are some color schemes easier than others to pull due to the availability or pricing trends of manufactured objects like furniture and decor? For example, maybe a cyan monochromatic color palette would look cool, but you’d have to buy all new (expensive!) custom furnishings to make it happen, so you go with an analogous palette instead to open up more options. I expect this is probably a thing, but as an amateur I have no intuition for which the easier/cheaper and more difficult/expensive are.
@buzzi2k

@Nick_Lewis
@Nick_Lewis 3 жыл бұрын
My first thought here is to work with what you already have. If most of your decor is a certain color, then that might be a good starting point rather than buying new things. 2nd is that the trends usually work through the major retailers similar to fashion. The trendy colors that you see the most get picked up my the major retailers where they become more common and cheaper. For example the grey/green that I selected in this video is very popular right now and I saw a lot of it at IKEA which you can see in my fall 2020 video - off the top of my head there was a media console, a kitchen utility cart and even the halloween decor was all in that color. So selecting that color right now gives you lots of options at the major retailers that are jumping on this trend. I see this with the bathroom fixture company I own called Ollie Nickel where matte black was a custom color that was expensive and took months to get. Now it's more common and the price has come down. The last thing to point out is there is a relationship with how picky you are with the color you want, vs how much you want to spend. If you want a custom couch that is in a very specific color right now that you NEED to have, there are mid and high end retailers that will create that custom piece for you. If you are flexible on color (like you pointed out - going with analogous might help with this) than you have more options and you can save some money. So it's really a balance of supply meeting demand, and custom vs off the shelf. Hope all that helps!

@@Nick_Lewis May I suggest that it may be cheaper in the long run to just go with the color palette that you love the most. You will not be tempted to change it as trends come and go. At least, that has been my experience.

I'm actually thinking of pulling out a triad out of puple, green and orange (I guess). It looks like a mess, but my sketches are starting to look quite neat. Blue and red are also some of my faves. For instance I will use copper (ie orange) in metals, very light green on the walls with ipe (grenish coperish wood) on a mezanino. The top part of the mezanino wooden floor is painted purple (as wall the wall behind it - On that wall there is a copper framed mirror which could also be a copper collored mirror itself, but I'm considering), but a magenta-ish. There is a yoga hammock hanguing before the mezanino which is light purple (lavender-ish). The door is a major part of the project. Its a ipe wooden arch door with glass the acordeon style of sorts. The arch part is a beautiful magenta-ish purple-red color (this opens like a window and are kinda like mezanino windows in a way) and in the bottom there is that slightly green glass with metal net inside beause it fits the aestetic well. The furniture is mostly a dark, moody green and the wall moulding have hints of copper (mostly green though). It's anything but a projet now, very far from getting of paper so I have plenty of planning time to get a cohesive look. You could also argue that's not an actual triad and more like a duet and copper is mostly a accent color.

I like Tertiary colour schemes. Thought that might be covered. For example, I use cool greens (toward the blue) and orange (the colours that would be opposite that jewel tone of green-sea glass, jade, emerald on a tertiary scheme)- tones typically but also tints and shades. I’ve substituted chocolate/taupe for purple in the scheme. It works well together. If I used more deeper shades for a moodier less neutral look, I’d likely have gone with a deep shade of purple plum on the walls and sofa instead of the chocolate/taupe. But since most of the colours are mid range, this neutral makes a nice substitution.

Great introduction to color theory concepts. It would be good to let people know that in great art/interior design schools color theory is a months long course generally taken at the very beginning of years of study, and includes lots of hands on working with/experiencing how color works to create various moods and expressions. I realize this video was meant to be a short intro, but it would be really useful to also talk about color balance, and give examples of how that affects a room.

When I first moved into my house, I chose a colour palette for each room. It hadn’t occurred to me that any of the rooms should tie in with each other, I simply went with what was already on the walls and the pieces of decor I already have. Then I looked through the colour palettes on Pinterest. I choose pale neutral colours with one strong accent colour and one metallic. I didn’t do a lot of work, but when I’ve shown people around they do comment how nice the rooms look where I have done a really good job making everything in the room a colour from the pallet.

Came over from link in your current video, and I just want to compliment you on your video quality and how it is more cozy in 2022! The sound, the lighting, and maybe the fps (I could be wrong) are improved! Your content is still phenomenal!

Nick! I’ve watched a million video of colour design and you nailed it for me! Music and colour are not my forte! I’m saving this video and will write about tints/tones/ shades in my journal. You are the bomb and I’m glad I found your channel

Hi Nick, this was brilliant. Much more concise advice about colour theory than elsewhere. The thing I get confused about is that it seems according to colour theory that basically most colours go together and seem to fit into one of the frameworks analogous, triadic etc. So, is it in a way more significant what tint/tone/shade each colour is as to whether they will go together?

So glad you liked it! I think it's a good idea to use near-matching tints, tones and shades to create a good jumping off point, but from there you can play around a bit once your scheme starts coming together. The different types of palettes is meant more as a guide to help people that are struggling to combine colors that go together. There are other types of palettes that I could have talked about like triadic, split-complementary etc. but I just didn't have the time. To get the the crux of your question, yes, I would start with matching tones and play around and see what works for your eye. A bright, pure orange for example might work well against a heavily tinted blue for example, but you might not want to start there - start with something similar and work from there. I can go into balancing colors in a future video. Ok, that was long, but it was a good question - I hope I helped!

@@Nick_Lewis What an awesome reply!! Thank you so much. I would certainly love to hear more about your takes on methodologies on how to approach colour, like you describe. It's what's missing from a lot of info out there for those interested in design

I'm the complementary kind of girl too! I *love* (cool) green + redish orange (like "terra cotta", red wood, copper or koi-fish colour..) and (cool indigo) blue with (orangy) yellow (like maize, gold, blonde wood (bamboo etc.))! Or sth. between, like turquoise plus orange/roségold/copper.. ☆♡ But I also like black & white.

I am so glad I got color samples before I painted my living room. I taped them to the wall and moved them around at different times of day. I wanted a nice medium/light sage green. The color I chose was called wedding mint, its actually a mint blue. The lighting in my living is is so warm that what looks green on my walls is actually blue.
