Nicki Minaj - “Pink Friday 2” Review

The thing about Nicki's previous albums is that they all had something to prove. Pink Friday showed that she was more than just the "new pretty face of the block." Roman Reloaded showed she can be a pop star if she wanted to. The Pinkprint was to show people she was a rapper first and foremost and while she can sprinkle pop and be amazing at it she is a hip-hop artist and a force to be reckoned with. And Queen she was on defense mode and was coming for everyone who disrespected her. Which is why they are all iconic in different ways. With Pink Friday 2 there wasn't anything to prove, and the theme was all over the place and felt more like a fan compilation of songs she hasn't released rather than an album. The title and promotion was also misleading thinking this would be a very girly pink record. When in reality half the songs made you feel blue or feel like Queen leftovers. What I can appreciate is how experimental her beats were so even if I didn't like a song lyrically I can enjoy the beat. In the end this is a good Nicki Minaj album but it wasn't PINK FRIDAY 2. And a different title would have definitely made our criticisms less harsh.

@@waynetvofficial listening to it she has a classic album in this album but it just to many songs. The prior albums was shorter on its initial realize if you don’t count their deluxe version.if she kept it to maybe 13 to 15 song it wouldn’t have served its purpose.

Tbh, I think this shoulda been called "Sucka Free 2". The whole album is onbrand with Sucka Free. Thats when she started getting animated fr, dabbled into pop (and other sub-genres) music/sounds and this album was a good blend between her different sounds, but constructively it lacked cohesion (after Everybody- which i did a mashup too on my oage🤭) it was a little too long. Nonetheless, imma be front row @ that next tour!

i really appreciate ur reviews wayne. and i can agree, as a fan of nicki's music imo this album was underwhelming (i listened like 9 times cuz i really wanted to get into it 😭🥲) had too much fillers nd samples plus them being so obvious...i was hoping she would top queen nd push her pen fr, i wish she chose another name for the project idk, its giving more of a mixtape to me.

Honestly, I wish she would’ve changed the name of the album and also I wish she didn’t give the audience a sneak peek of the songs she eventually put on the album I actually love this album It is very long but she hit every point imo Relationship Her child Her still being the queen Her being married to Kenny and how she had to live her life the way SHE wants to (my life) I even liked “Forward from Trini” it was smooth and the featured artist delivered!!! I feel like this album is served to all of her fans… I also loved her delivery in most of the songs I loved this album initial listen For me it’s a 9/10

i always love your album reviews. i wouldn't consider myself a barb but i do love nicki's music, her talent is undeniable. that being said i thought the album was cool. i pretty much agree with everything you said. i will say, i don't like when people expect so much greatness from well established artists. im guilty as well, expecting another magnum opus from my faves. i get it, but i just think we expect too much from them. they've already proven themselves as a creative. i don't really know how to elaborate on that but that's how i feel lol. i had no clue she dissed megan on red ruby the sleeze tho, thats disappointing :/

No no you’re totally right. That feeling of expecting too much was something I did fight with while writing my thoughts out. Everything you said is very valid. And you are right. Nicki doesn’t have anything left to prove. And viewing the album through that lens does make me look at it differently. Thank you!

thats understandable however as an artist you shouldnt feel free to be mediocre (not saying nicki is) because everyone is not expecting too much from you. im not saying an artist should feel the pressure every single time to top previous stuff they released HOWEVER apart of what keeps them creative is the fact that there is an expectation to live up to. otherwise even well established artists would be serving mediocrity consistently if there wasnt any/too much expectation on them as creatives.

Did you people not watch the interview with Ebro ??? She said NO LEAD SINGLES or MUSIC VIDEOS no promo or any songs going to radio because she has nothing to prove and pink friday 2 was for the barbs.

Artists would drop their lead singles one to two years before their actual albums. They would perform one or two songs for months straight. Album cycles were 2 to 3 years. Since the 2020s theres no anticipation anymore, people want new stuff and they want it now. Lets appreciate that artists still do this that build anticipation. If you noticed Reinassance lasted almost 3 years now because, that's just what main girls from back in the day are used to Nicki was and is apart of that. Not the microwavable crap that comes out and then is forgotten in a month.

no they did not. Renaissance came out a month after Break My Soul by the way, and most of the biggest artists wait about a month or two before releasing. The most I’ve seen is three months. If it gets to 6+ months atp it’s a problem with the artist / label. Nicki has been guilty of this before but I honestly think it’s because she writes as she goes. most artists already have their albums completed / near completion when the lead comes out. I think the longest Nicki has ever taken prior to PF2 was Pinkprint era, it took her almost 7 months from the release of PnP in May to the album release in December 2014. I feel like Nicki had a lot of hype in that era for Bang Bang and that’s why she was inspired to release an album and probably came up with it on the spot. I theorize the exact same thing happened with PF2, she had been putting out buzz singles for 2 years and hadn’t been able to replicate the success of trollz and say so remix, so when SFG started doing numbers, I think she scrambled to pull an album together, and it probably kept getting delayed to cuz she’s kind of a perfectionist and struggled a lot from writers block during 2020-2022 and the birth of her son, so I get it, but that’s probably why pink Friday came out of nowhere. Cuz most people have moved on from SFG by the time of Pink Friday 2’s release

Hi. I think a lot of people are not resonating with the album on first listen because Nicki hyped it up so much without easing us slowly into the album. I agree. It’s her weakest album so far and (imo) wasn’t really worth the wait. It’s improper mixing, the lack of a proper roll out, and the fact that the physical copies don’t have all the songs tells me that Nicki wasn’t really in the headspace to make an album. I also dislike the Megan lines in RRDS. It’s one of the best songs on the album, but I feel like she’s punching down on a rising rapper like Lil Kim did to her.

the thing with nicki and especially her two latest album releases is that you can tell that they're rushed. she thinks she's providing us with incredible songs that are masterpieces when in reality they're mid at best. and don't get me wrong, liking mid music ain't bad cause i do listen to PF2 but she could've released way more qualitative projects if she tried a bit harder. she herself even posted astory saying that some mixes weren't ready yet and that they'd change them while the album was already out. i also think that she has lost herself as an artists after releasing The Pinkprint. that album was obviously her magnup opus and established her legacy but to me, after that, she lost track and fell back to mediocrity. last but not least, a think that's bothering me a lot with nicki is her attitude. ever since other female rappers popped up on the scene killing it we can tell that she feels threatened. but instead of minding her bussiness and focusing on her craft, she waists time over silly beefs and petty lyrics and that's just not it. imagine a nicki x cardi collab. or even a nicki x megan collab (but just the two of them). it would be dope but her attitude would never let her do sth like that. and to me that's sad.

I was honestly disappointed in this album, I still struggle to connect to it. In other words, I really don't like it. Upon first listen, I had my face scrunched because I didn't understand how someone of her calibre could release such an unimaginative and watered down album. Sometimes it feels like she needs an honest conversation with people who aren't yes men who will steer her to make more bold and avant-garde creative choices. Sonically, the album sounds outdated and this is a common critic carried over from "Queen". I just wish she could work with different producers and hire a creative team that will curate a more visually pleasing and cohesive visual for the era. One cannot deny that she is adept in rapping but the overall package in her music is starting to fall flat and I don't like that.

Honestly this album was just underwhelming and did not deserve to hold the namesake of Pink Friday. I wasn’t a fan of the interpolations & the opening with that Billie eilish chipmunk sample made me laugh out loud. Not even the tracks that I was most hyped for like Big Difference gave me enough energy to truly enjoy it. I was super bored by the time I was reaching the middle of the album. Then came Everybody with Lil Uzi and I began to hyped again but the beat never fully dropped and it made me feel disappointed again. Then for the type of tracks that I usually most enjoy from Nicki’s discography aka the more pop esque ones… like Cowgirl was SOO disappointing. Her more pop sounding songs had THE MOST basic generic GarageBand beats. I swear Nicki could’ve prospered more if she had more interesting producers. By the end of the album I was just glad it was all over. Which sucks cause I really wanted to enjoy it. 6/10 cause I love Nicki. But truly it’s a 3/10 for me.

I like the songs individually but I think it lacks cohesion as a full body of work. It feels as if Nicki’s label was really pushing her to finally drop an album and feels as if she just said “ya know what..I’ll give you the album, and I’ll name it Pink Friday 2 so I can really give y’all the hit album you’re begging me for”…but I think to the general public that it came off as a cash grab..At some points in the album it feels like it’s a fan made compilation in my opinion. She even said herself that some songs are from the queen era and I think you can really hear that when listening. Like The Pinkprint and Queen felt like she went into the studio with a set theme and concept in mind and made a unique album track by track if that makes sense. But PF2 lacks that conceptual feeling and uniqueness. Idk if it’s the samples, or the fact that she literally went back into her vault of music and compiled songs but I just wish she wouldn’t have named it Pink Friday 2 at least 😭
