Bodybuilding may not be dying, but too many bodybuilders are.

At the state level, BB is 100% dying and there's zero question about it. In the years past, the Teen Michigan competitors' would fill the entire stage along with another line behind them that filled the entire stage in the mid-'80s. Now we get maybe 2-3 teens for the entire show. Some of the state-level shows I did in Michigan had a shocking amount of competitors and now some shows have 8 BB's total. I think the NPC is hoping that classic physique replaces BB at some point but to date not enough people are interested in classic physique. Finally, much is also dependent on how you define BB? IMO it's open BB and classic physique competitors and besides that, I don't consider anyone a BB like so many like to say. In fact, since I no longer compete, I'm no longer a BB. When someone asks me if I'm a BB I simply say, "no, I lift weights."

The era of the mass monster is dying. Maybe not in the ifbb, but in the people's eyes. It's actually getting "ugly." The bodies are getting ugly. Take the names out of it and just look at some physiques. Even the youtube personalities ( Lobliner, kali, rich Piana.) The bodies are not pleasant to look at. The immense giant quads on top ifbb pros : this is not athletic. This is bizarre.

I think this is a broad question that needs to be split in two: 1. Is the interest in *bodybuilders* dying? No, As you've mentioned, they have massive followings on social media. We're in an age where lighting, filters and editing can make a very good physique look absolutely incredible. This only helps individuals who's main business hinges on showcasing their body. 2. Is *competitive* bodybuilding dying? At best, I'd say it's stagnant. Those millions of social media followers are clearly not flooding in numbers to watch pro competitions. If they were, we'd see far higher levels of sponsorship investment and prize money. There's a large gap between liking a picture of a bodybuilder on Instagram and taking the time/having an interest in watching them compete at the latest pro show. This gap isn't helped by the destructive "more size = better" mindset that plagues bodybuilding judging - putting the freakiest athletes front and center. To me, I don't see a mainstream interest in the competitive merits of bodybuilding. People care less about on stage performance, and more about the lifestyle. You can clearly sell supplements, merch and training plans on the back of your idealised social media image rather than your competitive performance. I think it's telling that Kai Greene is the World's most famous bodybuilder, even though he hasn't competed since 2016. Kai Greene the personality, the motivator, the showman, is arguably more appealing than Kai Greene the competitive bodybuilder.
@jlogan22286 жыл бұрын
Agreed i only became interested in kai after generation iron and sae his personality his history etc. The prob w modern body building is that everyones a mass monster and everyones the same shade of dark tan so in a competition its hard for anyone to really stand out and im defonitely not gonna be interested enough to pay money or even watch guys just flex. The tittle should be, is old school bodybuilding dying( Arnold, frank zane generation ) don't promote bubble gut.
@maxdelater33695 жыл бұрын
Is it dying? No. The Arnold and Frank Zane generation has loooong ended. This mass monster problem has been gooming on since the early 2000s, I'm glad that were just starting to realise it can't go on like this and were (trying) to make some changes. Introducing classic physique is already a really good thing, although this won't be the big solution. We're making progress and in a little over 10 years we'll probably be back to the mid-90s physique with bodybuilding.
@MeanBeanComedy5 жыл бұрын
@@maxdelater3369 I'd argue Dorian started the movement, although he did it with RAZOR sharp conditioning. (Whats that? The 1997 Olympia? Never heard of it. Didn't happen. He retired in 1996 and Nasser won in '97)
@noodles27326 жыл бұрын
Even though it's not a popular opinion I personally like Phil Heath and his physique (when he's closer to 100% obviously 2017 was a shit show and a half). The problem is that most bodybuilders at lower level IFBB shows look like utter train wrecks because all they do is blast gear and carb load trying to be Heath. Modern bodybuilding requires a hard balance of good quality gear, obscure genetics, and luck to not die of heart and renal failure before getting a pro card.

Mass monstering got taken way too far. The abusive use of insulin, igf-1, research chems, and overeating carbs caused this problem. We never had this prevailant a problem with it in the early first decade of the 2000's. It got out of control once Phil Heath took and kept the Mr. O title.

It's time to get rid of the IFBB. Their problems are too deep seeded to fix I'm afraid. They have shown that they are entirely incapable of leading the sport in the direction it needs to go. There's no reason the competitors of the 80s and 90s should look better than the ones today who have so much more equipment, knowledge, and resources at their hands.

In my opinion BODYBUILDING itself is dying. What is not dying is the fitness industry, in fact like Nick says fitness industry with all this social media has never been in such a high popularity. Here in Argentina, for example, lot of people who were born in the 60s and 70s tend to smoke and drink a lot without caring about consequences. That had a big impulse over the 90s and 2000 generation because we started to realize that if we do exercise we can live better longer and happier unlike the older generations who in most cases are suffering liver disease, lung cancer, etc. Nowadays you can literally see gyms in every fucking corner of Capital Federal where 20 or 15 years ago you could barely see even 1 with a 20 blocks round area.

One point I've heard you make as well as many other younger bodybuilders (BB) is that they miss the days when BB's had a small waist like Arnold back in the "Golden Era." I giggle every time I hear that because most BB's in the '80-'90s considered Arnold (including Arnold himself in the '70s.) to have a wide waist. Also, the various twisting poses Arnold did was not meant to hide his left bicep since it wasn't as peaked as his right as you mentioned. In fact, Arnold did various twisting poses to hide his wide waist based on what Joe Weider told him. That's one point that makes this channel interesting because so many are commenting purely based on pictures, old videos, and current thought.
@geminierica40776 жыл бұрын
I'm a new fan to the sport also at 38, I stated out following women who compete in bikini because that's the body type I most prefer for myself but through social media and their connections I've become a fan of bodybuilding as a sport (like watching hockey or something ..hey I'm Canadian!) But I find the whole thing (how people can sculpt every inch of their body) very interesting and somehow I ended up watching nicks strength and power and enjoying the videos and bodybuilding competitions. I'll never bodybuild myself more than casually, but even if you don't it's a fun spectator sport and open I think now to more people than ever with these athletes on social media and such.

Bodybuilding isn’t dying it’s been dead. Ever since the mass monsters hit the scene the public opinion on bodybuilding shifted from men at the peak of physical fitness to “look at those freaks” that’s why the faces of fitness today aren’t Phil Heath and Kai Greene. It’s guys like Jeff seid, Steve cook, David laid and jon sky walker.
@patrikroyale1794 жыл бұрын
I understand how mass monsters came to be, being that taller bodybuilders have to put on more mass in order to have the longer striated muscles to be full but somewhere a long the way symmetry and aesthetics along with overall appearance and shape was lost. There was a time of when the upper torso was tapered off into a v shape which meant a smaller tight waist line, tight abs and then the thighs when together was supposed to be equivalent to the width of the chest to create proportions.....I think that if there were less judging for mass, body builders like Dexter Jackson, Kevin Levrone, Shawn Ray, Flex Wheeler, Lee Priest and a few others would have won at least one or maybe two Mr. Olympias simply because they usually were undersized against Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, etc.....

Bodybuilding in the competition sense i think is definitely dying, and i think the organisers amd judges are primarily to blame. They are the ones who let the mass bodies with thier bubble guts get the praise, instead of cit conditioned bodybuilders. I'm 39 years old, been a fan of bodybuilding competition for years but my fandom has been chipped away the last few years due to the way the competition has gone. Its no longer about cut or aesthetics its all about mass and size. The bubble guts are the worst thing to happen to the sport.

You should've seen the gym scene in 97 and 98, Nick. That's when I began lifting. I was the only kid in high school (that wasn't an athlete) that lifted weights.

It’s a big difference when I first got interested in bodybuilding in my hs years... they are way out of line now, I just started lifting again and I love the classic physic. That is true body building all in conjunction with the body type and lines... perfect...

It's like school, as we grow n have more knowledge with info at our fingertips these days, Mike Chang was like elementary but it got most of us off our asses and started, then as more info comes available with more uploaders with valuable info so do we as the participant's interests. Zyzz kinda started the aesthetic movement, but now it's college n knowing all of that we need more. It's like being a ricer for cars, all look no go. The best n most healthy is to train with purpose. Either it's kickboxing, martial arts or sports training etc, training for purpose will get u the aesthetics but also mobility n function ur body needs. It will react n move when naturally when suppose to instead of just looking the part. Trust, u don't wana be the big for nothing dude, who don't have the skill sets when situations arise n most needed. By now think the fitness community should or have been grown into this state, bettering ourselves further. If not then what we really handing down to the youth n next generation, cus getn big as possible is unhealthy I promise. Just an opinion. #SS

Yeah but when's the last time a rock/metal album or song charted number 1 most recently. It's pretty much dead to the mainstream. It's been surpassed by Hip-Hop, which is the current edgy/rebellious music for most kids today.

Bodybuilding dying? Nah. You're right Nick, social media has made the level of awareness and the number of followers explode. I also agree that the quality and caliber of the competitors had been on a steady decline since the trend of mass monsters began. I believe that trajectory has been righted and is now headed upward with the Classic Physique division. The fact that the cover has been peeled offa certain enhancements has also helped repair some damage and lotsa fans, myself included, don't wanna see competitors and icons die young. There has also always been many of us who have no desire to see or promote overgrown piles of meat. In fact, I prefer to watch Belgian Blue Bull contests and commentaries to that kind of thing. Couldn't agree more Nick, you're good for bodybuilding so keep it up brutha! Heh, heh. ......................................PEACE!!

"as a sport, as a pageant. Whatever you wanna call it" Let's be honest: the goal of professional bodybuilding is competing at events. Technically, it's just a pageant, not a sport.

I could be wrong about this, but it seems that before, many powerlifters moved onto bodybuilding, whereas today, many people make the opposite transition.

Nick's Strength and Power I guess I worded that wrong. I meant that many people who are big on social media are either Powerbuilders or straight up trying out powerlifting. Russel Orhii is a good example.

48 yrs old and a life long BB that is a true old school Kevin Levrone mind set to training and nutrtion. All that said, im starting to take a look at the Classic division now and truly enjoy watching it take off. May not surpass the open freak division, where u can put the top 10 in the world together behind a silhouette screen and they all look the same. Only diff is ht! Distorted muscle proportions do to site enhancements they ALL USE! I have Big nutrition company connection that is friends with all the big names and its nearly all top level. Take that with the amount of food and insulin used by some and its just a genetic freak , chemical game. Most we see as top level are all guys who could pit muscle on easier than you or I. Anyway.. Nice work Nick, glad to see you come into your own the past couple years. All the best. Big Ed

Yes. I feel it is dying in the way you described it, Nick. Sad but true. There is hope with Classic Physique. 60s, 70s, & 80s bodybuilding had the greatest physiques ever. Okay, some early 90s as well. But when Dorian started the era, or Error of the Mass Monsters, that was the beginning of the end. Let's hope Classic Physique can get it all back on track to the way bodybuilding used to be. The way it should still be now.

It's all social media. Social media has the amazing ability to uncover something like bodybuilding that is usually a niche.... Back in the 70s there weren't many people interested in bodybuilding because it's something hard to give context to until you train. + People were way less health conscious back then

to be honest, I had no interest in bodybuilding for a long time. I started off with athlean-X when I was 13 and followed his tips and tricks and made some great newbie gains. It wasnt until I found your channel that I was impressed by how much work it took to be a bodybuilder and the level of persistence it took.
