It bugs me that there isn’t night DLR yet. The trains are driverless and the stations don’t need any staff to function, so what is holding that back? Think of the benefits it would bring in terms of having a zero change, night time link between Canary Wharf and the City of London, the two big financial centres. As well as 24/7 travel to city airport.

I don't know the financial world very well, but I doubt they work at night, so would have little use for a night service. As for London City Airport: I don't think it's large enough to make it worthwhile. They still have to move enough passengers to make up for the investment.

London City Airport is only open between 06:30 to 22:30 Monday to Friday, 06:30 to 13:00 on Saturdays and 12:30 to 22:30 on Sundays so the demand for a 24/7 there is extremely limited

I appreciate the replies. I just can’t help thinking there is definitely the demand. The only station in the south east of London that’s also south of the river is North Greenwich, and even when there isn’t an event on at the O2 the station is in very high demand despite only having one line running through it. Even at 3am there are long queues to get onto buses heading towards Eltham, Woolwich and Bexleyheath. Having the DLR available at night would alleviate the strain on the station.

I was blown away as well to hear that london doesnt have at least some 24 hours services. In Sydney, Aus, a much less populated city, we have had 24 hour service for years, decades maybe. Even on regional lines they generally have at least one train every hour in the night / early morning.

The main reason the trains don't go to Clapham is because from there you can only get buses as the national rail train (southern and south western) don't run trains at night

Where I live the population is about 200,000 people - we get jacked with bus service that shuts down around midnight and starts up at between 5:00-6:00AM. Irks the crap out of me.

Mainly due to the lack of drivers and infrastructure works. Once the sub-surface upgrade is complete they will likely join the night tube, as well as the Bakerloo once it's upgraded from it's current signalling system and trains

which one, in Germany only Berlin and Hamburg had traditionally night buses and now also trains at weekend..Tokyo has no night trains or buses at all (and there are 22 Million) . The only two cities in the world I know have a real night train system are New York and Chicago....and in addition I'm not very impressed about the nightlife in London anyway...this is far better in Hamburg or Berlin.

This would be very beccesary in a city like Madrid, with an intense nightlife. Some years ago they tried to put this service on Madrid Metro, but drivers union stopped. Mostly because Metro wanted they worked for free these hours!

would be great for Singapore to run their MRT 24hrs as well but with all the reliability issues and upgrading works... *sigh* Singaporeans will either complain/be skeptical in many different ways if we were to run our MRT overnight. -Noise from train disrupting my sleep! -Only ghosts will use it. -The fares will rise! -Why does it not serve the whole line? -Why does it not stop at my station? -Waiting time is too long! -Should focus on maintenance since the MRT is breaking down often! But for the record, our trains did run overnight at a 1 hour interval to shuttle SCSM runners for that one year. Trains also ran till 3 am when the former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's public funeral wake was held.

True, however New Cross is managed by Southeastern, so TfL would have to pay them to keep the station open. New Cross Gate is managed by Arriva Rail London (London Overground concession holder).

New Cross Gate is a much better connected area than New Cross station is, as most of the night buses stop right outside the station whereas with New Cross you might have to walk a bit to get between the station and bus stops. (Also the depot is right by New Cross Gate, so it’s easier to move trains about than from the New Cross branch.) (As a side note, what would be nice to see is the Thameslink overnight services stopping at New Cross Gate when the night Overground is running, but I don’t know how likely that is to happen.)

The line is called "The London Overground". The name follows the same theme as the commonly known "The Tube" being named the "Night Tube" Therefore the "Night Overground" just follows this theme. Works well enough in my 'London Eyes'

This is all well and good, and if I lived there I’d almost certainly use it. BUT... What happens when there’s trouble? I don’t mean a failed train, leaves on the line or a cracked rail; I mean muppets who have had too much to drink and start throwing their weight around. Punch ups, damage to the trains, staff assaults, vomit 🤮 everywhere? This is going to need a hell of a lot of policing.
