There is no "best way". Different people get scared by different things. The best way would be to have the constant dread of the threat but not have the threat itself appear that much, so that when it does, the dread resets and the player is stuck cowering in fear for an hour until the threat finally comes. But sometimes that doesn't even work, but giving the player control is definitely a great way to make the player more scared.

You can see that the developers know how to make people be afraid in the game. Instead of jumpscares, this game utilizes a good atmosphere, combined with its retro(and creepy-ish) music, it slowly builds up the player's frustration and fear. The environment of the game (despite i do think the area is a bit too abandoned) the theme of it does give you a sense of dread, another factor to build up being afraid in the game. And of course another hidden part where most rarely consciously are aware that, you can't kill the antagonist. That's a small but imo a crucial fear factor. If you can kill the antagonist that will quickly let the player have the confidence/bravery to continue/finish the game, making the game not scary. For this game i do felt a bit directions for players to know where to move could be useful, of course wandering around increases nervousness and anxiousness which can make the game "scary" But being stuck for 10 minutes may make players not enjoy it. Another thing is i suppose there could be more to the ending...? Perhaps (just like other horror games) a killer stands behind the protagonist. Or a (original) plot twist where Butch/Dj is the Night Ripper. Just seeing that the protagonist sitting not on the couch watching Tv, while the killer is still outside wandering, kinda makes me feel a bit disappointed. But overall, i think this is a properly well made horror game. You can SEE and FEEL the effort that are committed by the developers in the game. You feel afraid not because of pure jumpscares, but because of how the atmosphere, the sound effects/music, the theme of the game stacks up your fear meter, afraid of getting caught, having only 3 lives, etc all these elements shows how considerate and thoughtful of the developers were when creating the game. 8/10 from me :)

@bgzeuskriezt44506 жыл бұрын
Yeah, to me it's a lot better than Powerdrill Massacre, mainly because that game, despite it's well develop atmosphere and the sense of dread, was kinda unfair for the player. I mean, the building was confusing and easy to get lost in, the controls were awful, and the jumpscares whenever the killer appeared were unneccesary because of how little the game prepares you whenever the killer was near by and how it startled you so much that you couldn't react to it. Idk, puppet combos recent games are a lot better than the older ones to me.

"he /definitely/ went down." *immediately goes down as well* john you're making poor rachel into the stupid preppy girl who's second or third to die in a horror movie because her boyfriend was trying to show off his bravery
@xxpandagalaxyxx56556 жыл бұрын
I mean to be fair, she was already that girl for walking home in the hood, at night, with a serial killer on the lose and no weapon, when a coworker would have given her a ride.
@xxpandagalaxyxx56556 жыл бұрын
Also for ignoring 3 buildings (the peep houses and the hotel) that seemed opened and could have let her stay in till the cops come. (I know it's a horror game and the main characters always make stupid decisions, but I think it's fun to think about the stupidity and come up with better solutions.)

Your scared noises are the best. “Oh oh oh, gasp, no, no, mh mh” Then all the questions you ask them, you crack me up. Keep being you John, I’ll never get tired of it.

I loved the idea of evading a killer. A real situational fear is always more scary to me than any monster. I agree with you that the DJ was probably the killer. I thought interesting that the cocaine she picked up & the areas she was running in made her fit the victim profile of a drugged-out prostitute. I didn't get the purpose of the pilss - every fall or attack by DuckMan was fatal - were they health? or just another "druggie" thing to again make her fit the profile? A little map would be a wonderful addition or the character saying something like, I need to keep going west, etc bc she may know where her apartment is, but the player sure doesn't. Also, the roof part needs some fixing so her feet don't drift to the right. The newspaper info was fairly repetitive, but that could be necessary if you didn't read one once, you had multiple chances. Very cool, but I'm glad you didn't keep the VHS aesthetic, as it made it hard to see. I can't imagine you doing the roof board parkour with fuzz. Very enjoyable to watch - I wish they would keep refining it.

This game is like a 80s horror movie. but if it was an 80s horror game it would of been 2D instead of 3D. despite the retro graphics

So glad I came across John’s channel, not sure if this was the first video I watched of him or dark web game. But I think this was my first puppet combo gameplay and I really love this gameplay despite this not being my number 1 puppet combo game. Anyway I really like John and I am happy he is doing well with his family and his baby ❤ and wow this video is 6 years old 😭 I am feeling old now haha

I actually wasn't expecting to like this because of the graphics. (I was reminded of Grandma before someone hits me with the "graphics don't equate how good a game is" thing). I actually really enjoyed this. I wasn't overtly terrified but I do think some of the struggles and tasks were cool and nice touches (i.e., losing your keys and needing to find $0.10 to make a pay phone call to your roommate or 911) as well as inventive. I'm interested in seeing their other games now and how they look.
