I wrote on another recent reaction page that this is an absolute British anthem of the 1990s. Pretty much anyone who is over 30 and was born in the UK will know this song, and it's one of those - like "Wonderwall" - that is guaranteed to get a bit of a singalong to the chorus in a crowd, especially after a few drinks! And this was a well established song before the Manchester Arena attack, which is why it could resonate so much when that did happen. The driver of the cab is the late actor Patrick Macnee, who was famous for the 60s TV show The Avengers (not about the Marvel team!), and the shot where he stands twirling his rolled umbrella is a nod to the character he played. Surprised you've only just discovered this track, but glad you've both seen and heard it now, and very timely with the Oasis reunion coming up! You're right to pick up on nods to The Beatles, as there are several deliberate references to elements of Beatles history in this (and other Oasis songs) - so much so that a lot of people who dislike Oasis feel they are too derivative in attempting to be inferior copies of The Beatles, but I've always just appreciated the band for what they are. Not all their songs are great but this is one of their legendary tracks that has already cemented their place in British music history. Well worth checking out more of their catalogue, especially from their earliest albums "Definitely Maybe", "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" (where this song came from) and "Be Here Now".

'Sally' is a woman called Melissa Lim from San Francisco whom Noel had a short-lived relationship with after he temporarily left the band after their first album. She had some involvement in his decision to rejoin. If you watch the video 'Who's Sally?' on the 'James Hargreaves Guitar' youtube channel he explains the story in detail. Incidentally, Noel has distanced himself from the use of his song by Chris Martin and others for political ends. If someone bombs kids at a concert in your home town you, frankly, have a right to be angry. Chris Martin was acting very nefariously.
@paulanthonytully2 ай бұрын
@@BobBrodie it's not sadly, James Hargreaves just romanticised that part. It was Liam who gave Noel the 'Sally' name because he thought Noel was singing that name (but wasn't) during Noel playing his demo version of the song, ...... The song that is often linked to Melissa in San Francisco is 'Talk Tonight' as Noel wrote that shortly after his brief exit from the band in the US.

@@paulanthonytully While the story by James (and with that the whole 90ies trilogy theories, especially about Whats the Story morning glory) is very worth watching, the version of Liam misunderstanding "Sorry" for "Sally" at the time of recording seems just like the "realistic" thing. Not some acronymial wordplay of said woman from SF. They were living the rocknroll lifestyle to the fullest at that time, so i can imagine this just all too well. In the end Noel ended up singing it and kept Sally.

Super cool video, thanks! It's my favourite song since I was 13 lol (I'm 36 now). I heard it on the radio in Poland first, and spent good couple of months trying to figure out how it was called (I didn't speak English back then and the internet was quite limited). It just immediately brings these good feelings about the past and 90s nostalgia. It also followed me through life, through many difficult and happy moments. I've seen Noel live 3 times and was busting my lungs out singing 'So Sally can wait' with the crowd. Magical moment. Last year I moved to the UK and it's another level - whenever this song goes in the pub the whole pub starts singing. Crazy. And then I got this idea - I asked a tattoo artist from Hamburg I really like if she could draw Sally. I got the tattoo from her last month and it's absolutely amazing ;))

Interesting fact you might not know, Noel and Liam had a discussion (or knowing them an argument 😂) about which one either would sing out of Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger and Liam chose Wonderwall. I'm glad cause I think Don't Look Back In Anger suits Noel's voice perfectly. Patrick McKnee from The Avengers in the video too as the chauffeur, nice touch. Also, the song isn't about anything, Noel admits this with alot of his lyrics, he makes them up but the line in the bridge, "stand up beside the fireplace and take that look from off your face" is when as kids Noel and his siblings would stand in front of the fireplace and have their picture took (or possibly if they were in trouble) and I think they used to pull faces and their mother Peggy in an Irish accent would say, "take that Look from off your face".

According to Liam & Noel's older brother Paul, their violent and abusive father used to make the boys stand by the fireplace and shout at them to "take that look from off your face" when taking family photos, which he wanted to show as happy to the outside world. As Noel was apparently the one who got the most abuse, it's not really surprising that he is reluctant to acknowledge such things as being an influence or an inspiration. The expression "you ain't ever gonna burn my heart out" may very well therefore have initially been directed at Noel's father. Of course, I don't know for sure but if one reads Paul Gallagher's biography which was published in about 1996, he does mention this.

I guess I don't know the band well enough to pick up on all this. 😂

@@nikkireviews The two brothers, leaders of the band, were famous for their on and off stage fights and breakups. Liam is the lead singer (didn't sing on this one), Noel is the songwriter and main guitarist and occasional singer. Liam got mad in one of their early tours, left the tour, and Noel sang all of the songs himself. Liam has a great Lennon-esque voice.

Hola Nikki. Te gustaría ver un concierto en vivo de Oasis en Argentina? Podrías ver el de Buenos Aires en el estadio de River Plate o el de Lolapalooza.

THERE IS NO SALLY. Liam misheard him singing some lyrics and thought he said So Sally can wait, Noel thought it sounded better & put it in. NME interview with Noel, 1996.

This is the best Oasis song in my opinion, but if you try and listen to it live at their really big concerts from the past, the crowd overwhelmingly takes over the song. This is a powerful thing to hear but unfortunately it's rare to find a really good version of "Don't look back in anger" sung by just the band and not the crowd live. However this does add to the songs legendary status among all time great favorite songs in concert because of the interaction of the crowd.
