I know that hardpack ice cream one all too well. Getting that in your load out on a submarine is a luxury. For me it was caffeine, cigarettes (back when you could still smoke on a submarine) and dip. I even told new guys who didn't smoke or dip to bring that with them. Good bartering items for qualifications.

So, BS promotions in the Army. I got an automatic promotion to E5 when I graduated from AIT. I was a reservist and the MOS doesn't normally allow someone to apply unless they are already an E4P or E5. During AIT I lived in the single soldier barracks and while I had a 2 man room they couldn't place anyone else in it since I was a trainee and couldn't be placed with an active duty soldier. They have since fixed this by moving the school to a training base where there are other training barracks to house reservists going through the program who have this as their first MOS.
