Man, for years I played live shows and went to shows with no ear protection. Practiced my drums with a PA system blasting. You know how you get a ringing in your ears after being exposed to loud noises for an extended time? That happened to me all of the time and by the next day, the ringing would be gone. Until it wasn't. I've had tinnitus for 7 years now. I will never know what it's like to hear silence again. There is always a hissing/ringing in my right ear. It took a long time to just adjust to it and learn to live with it. But it really sucks. People ABSOLUTELY need to protect their ears. Tinnitus is fucking obnoxious.

@@leagueoflemons6844 Here's the thing, though. I'd wish modern metal bands could be as big as they used to be back in the 80's. Problem being that the industry and the audience has changed so much that if at all this is only possible by one of two things. You either work your butt of over a very long period (and be lucky to hit a nerve) or you lower your own standards so much that your music becomes acceptable for parts of the mainstream audience, at which point, unluckily, it isn't real metal anymore. Now I don't even mind things not being metal, I also listen to rap, some hip hop and a few select pop artists. And I certainly don't mind artists wanting to be commercially successful with their music. MGK made Tommy Lee endearing. Being a metal head means I get to go to shows for 10-20 dollars. Perks. Also, my son played me a song from Pantera the other day, and I knew it was the first track from Cowboys from Hell. Still can't remember the name haha. Chanting one more song is typically to allow the headlining band a breather for the closer. Lorna Shore just did that recently. My son was lucky enough to get a set-list. Editing more: DO NOT see Angelmaker without ear plugs.

about the one more song one.. total agree. EXCEPT when the venue has a strict curfew... when i saw Bullet For My Valentine several years ago at the Roseland Theater in Portland Oregon, they had started the intro to Tears Dont Fall part 2 and the house lights came on cause venue curfew .. so its disappointing when they dont get to do so

The earplug gripe... I feel like I'm the only idiot who wears them at a concert. I went to a Devin Townsend show in Prague. The sound in the pit was so loud and sharp I saw a bunch of people cupping their ears. I handed out 5 pears of foam earplugs to whoever asked for them.

8:14 - 8:40 Absolutely true. I hadn't listened to Dance Gavin Dance for even a full year before their bassist died of a drug overdose, and then Tilian was metooed. This is just one example of the many good bands that do stupid shit and cut a good thing short and ruin it for fans with their behavior.

Some bands have a very distinct sound which people love. You can have variety in the songs but they'll still have their sound. S great example of that is Bury Tomorrow. Their new stuff is different but still feels the same.

6:54 When I saw Tremonti live this year, as they were approaching the end of their set, Mark said “We don’t do encores, theres no point” and I love that, because he’s right. I hope other bands start to see that, but at the end of the day it’s probably up to them, and if they want to do it. Then do it.

I listen to alot of albums all the way through (it's kind of a litmus test for whether I would consider myself properly a fan or whether I only 'kind of/sort of' like a band). So, if an album has no filler, I never need to skip. If it doesn't have one absolute banger that stands out against all the other tracks I never have a reason to check the song titles... I can name most albums by a lot of bands.... I'd probably struggle with song titles though...

The MGK hate train got old really fast. Also I remember in 2019, where I went to see MIW. Didn't bring any ear plugs and was sitting very close to the stage but not close to the pit and it sounded like a machine gun going off in my ears. It was fun as hell but holy shit! 😬 my ears wouldn't stop ringing for a few days and I had to wear ear muffs. Always bring ear plugs, trust me it ain't worth it. 👍

I had recently watched a couple of videos trying to understand my tastes in music better. This was a mistake. While I enjoy metal, trying to attach myself to a particular subgenre is basically impossible. I'd be like taking a gradient of Red and Green and saying "Find me where Red doesn't have any green in it" and then having everyone come to a consensus. Better yet, a crimson and Red gradient. Ultimately, I ended up with this: 1)is it theatrical? 2) can I apply it to a movie scene? Fight scene? Emotion? If it's a yes to any of these 2, I'll probably enjoy it. It's probably why I really like video game metal music like Doom and Metal Hellsinger. Just ticks all those boxes.

Riffs are most important IMO. With the exception of certain extreme vocals, the riff is what makes a song memorable. Sabbath, Rush, etc were so good partly because their riffs were sticky.

7:02 OKAY, not metal, but this happened to me this year! I was filming Country Concert in Fort Loramie, Ohio in July, and Morgan Wallen was headlining the final night. Drunk people threw stuff at him, he was mad about something else, and during his set skipped a song, then left and didn't come back on for this 3 SONG ENCORE. I was so confused, and it gave me a bad first impression of his live shows and his character.

Funny thinking back now about Larrs and how he tried stopping online audio file transfering.. But looking back, that whole ordeal created the copyright we have today and made big enough a noise to form the online trading of music we see now. His originaly concern was 100% fair for all artists, even including the big names.. artists don't really make good money via album sales and getting less hurt so many smaller artists.
