Nikon 1 J5 Review

The Nikon 1 J5 features a new 20.8 megapixel backside illuminated (BSI) 1" sensor. This sensor appears to be a similar design to the one found in the Sony RX100M3 and Canon Powershot G7X. The new Expeed 5A processor allows the camera to shoot 4K video at up to 15 fps and 1080p at up to 60fps. Unfortunately the new processor does not improve the battery life. The 1 J5 also features built in wifi that supports NFC technology.

This camera with the 18.5mm f/1.8 is a pretty sweet package. The 18.5mm is the "fast fifty" of the 1 series and it's pretty cheap (under $200 USD). Also, you forgot to mention that when you are in A, S, or M mode if you press up on the four way controller you get a function screen which allows you to change most of the key settings pretty quickly (White balance, picture control, ISO, etc.). So although it's an entry level camera you can make changes to settings pretty quickly and intuitively.

I cant imagine i am still using nikon j5 in fall of 2020, long after it is discontinued. Disregard the flimsy lenses which aperture broke for no reason, it is one of the lightest, most compact and versatile system i have ever used. Guess what... Its DR performance is eveb better than EOS M3. The ISO performance cant be compared to those on APS-C but ISO800 or below is totally usable, ISO1600 can be a stretch but still acceptable. If the build quality of Nikon 1 system was improved back then, it is very likely the system would remain popular today, gather cult following even more massive than Pentax Q. This little imp might even swallow up the need of Nikon Z50 in current market, forcing Nikon to produce FF Z mount only. From Nikon perspective, an extremely durable Nikon 1 would force the company reluctantly release to rumored Nikon V4 just to keep the community happy, because it turns out Nikon might just be more willing to listen to their fans than Canon. The tale of J5 kind of remind us one thing. It is that even a dying system could have been resurrected if one choose to work hard on it and get innovative. Just look at Canon M50 II, it is just so underwhelming and Bruh, when i saw Canon release such a firmware upgrade at a fullset price.

The one-lens kit comes with the 1 Nikkor VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM lens... Unfortunately this does not have threads for filters, and the zoom ring (or whatever you call it) goes right up to the edge.. Is there a clip-on or snap-on ND filter that can be used with that lens? 58 mm diameter.

@@ariannasearway i like it a lot, its obviously no z line quality, but its pretty decent and very compact, with the ft1 adapter you can even use f glass if you have any ::: no focus peaking, so af is preferred

@@obedbrinkman I won my camera on eBay tonight! I won it for $330 it’s coming with two lenses 10-30mm and 30-110mm, a lens hood, 3 filters a 35 gigabyte memory card and a camera bag. I feel like a got a pretty good deal! I will definitely be purchasing an adapter so I can use the F mount lenses we have. ☺️

It's been a long time since I have looked at this camera.. If I remember correctly you can only see battery percentage on your phone/tablet when you are connected using Snapbridge.

Aaaaaand there's the requisite a6000 plug. Garbage? Sorry, but that's an ridiculous comment. I have both cameras. The a6000 has no advantage is focus speed at all, and in my testing the J5 locked focus more reliably. The a6000 has less noise, of course, but honestly it's not as huge a difference as many people make it out to be. The J5 is much smaller and can fit in a very small belt case with the kit lens or even a pocket with the pancake lens.

PeteC75 Agreed, I actually skipped the a6000 and got the J5 instead due to its size, weight and speed. The Nikkor 1 lense quality and selection is awesome.
