Only Nintendo knows how sales compare between physical and digital; if the physical-digital ratio is close enough to 50/50 I can see a digital-only model being a possibility. They're still far from ditching physical media but specifically, a "Lite" model could really benefit from being digital-only, as the cartridge slot takes a lot of space.

Ray Reconstruction was a given. It's tech that Nvidia is applying across even older RTX GPUs. What's great is that Switch 2 low-level, 'closed hardware environment' will allow devs to fine-tune this tech to a far greater degree than what you typically get with PC GPUs.

Does a proprietary cartridge slot cost much? I don't think a digital-only model would offer nearly as much of a price cut as it does for systems that use mechanical Blu-ray drives. I'd imagine it costs them about as much to include a micro SD slot.

As well as putting that same game on say eshop and lose more money. Now if the game is only digital they lose less money not sending it to wal-mart and packaging and discs ect.

All I see is massive bias for the dev industry specifically, and that on the western side of it, with no idea about any adjacent industries or even the totality of Japanese work culture. I say totality because it comes into play when talked about HOW corporate collaboration is run, while all they seem to know is the consumeristic model. SO desperate to control a narrative, reminds me of the BBC loicense detecting vans and carrots improving your eyesight. With a strong helping of a sense, that they have stock options on hold where the value is dependent on nobody making any wrong assumptions over what MIGHT happen. Dudes are sweating bullets over the notion that "false information" may get spread around. HOW DID Churchill back in the day really pinpoint those supply lines into German camps, I wonder? Carrots? Coincidence? There are things about the TGS demoing or the bc issue that are VERY explainable. These guys just run does not compute ERROR messages on their calculators, which also plays into those stock options. I guess that's one way to agree not to disclose.

I don’t think it’s true but if theres no digital BC that’s very bad on Nintendo. They’ve been building up that Nintendo account throughout the whole switch generation. You’re telling me the games on my account is not going to work for the next console and these companies are pushing digital only consoles? The physical side sounds pretty good though. Aside from that I think this is pretty good information Nate. Really excited to see how Switch 2 turns out, we needed a better switch like five years ago.

That depends on the scope of what "digital BC" means. If there's no technical BC on digital games, then I'd least I hope that whatever game I've bought thus far gets patched to run on my Switch 2 at no additional cost. At best I'd see this as the jump from 32-bit to 64-bit on iOS/Android, where there was a grace period of several years of Google and Apple saying to their developers "hey, we'll end support on this so make it compatible", and have the end user barely noticing it. Nintendo has been saying on shareholder meetings that they're confident in the ecosystem they made on the eShop and that they want a seamless transition to the next generation, so I don't think it's going to be a complete restart like the jump from Wii U to Switch. Also, if they're really selling a high-end model at $500 and has no alternate backwards compatibility then I hope they stick a Tegra X1 in there to justify the price. Making their most robust, complete and lucrative catalogue of all time suddenly incompatible and not do anything about it would be a major blow.

A cart console SKU might have extra hardware to support BC. So you effectively need to buy a cart slot for digital BC. Edit: I think Nate jumped to the wrong conclusion when he overlooked this possibility. cart sku required for BC != no digital BC

@@Yoshizuyuner unfortunately that's true; Nintendo could easily convert their entire first-party catalogue, but it depends on if third-party have no licensing hurdles, or if they have access to their source code, or if they have the will to not force people to double-dip on a remastered edition. I'll assume Nintendo has talked to major third-parties and, if they're ditching BC, they would have preemptively made negotiations with them to port them over.

I could see the Switch 2 being the Greenest Ray-tracing on the market, as the current switch (OLED) uses 6 Watts of power during heavy load while the PS5's current revision is at 160W during heavy load (launch day PS5s are 250+ Watts) There's a good chance the PS5 Pro will be less than 300W but the Switch 2 even if goes after higher end performance will probably will be less than 45W docked If the Switch 2 outperforms the PS5 Pro in final raytraced image/performance at a lower wattage that will be concerning for consumers. We just have to wait and see because remember 2 TFLOPS of AMD architecture isn't the same as 2 TFLOPs of Nvidia architecture We're already seeing 4 TFLOPS of PS4 Pro architecture > 4 TFLOPS of Series S even though the series S has more CPU headway and more RAM there has been some multiplatforms that it fell behind on the PS4 Pro. And we saw GoWR running fairly well on a PS4 despite it being outdated 1.8 TFLOP power. I'm more concern of the bandwidth, Memory and CPU power of the Switch 2 more than I am of it's GPU power. Because there could potential that the Switch 2 could really put the Series S in a blight if it runs and looks better on switch 2.

PS5 Pro will likely have RDNA4 RT instructions so rumoured to be a 2x improvement over the standard PS5 but remember it will also have 60CUs Vs 36CUs on the PS5. The game changer for PS5 Pro will be PSSR. The Switch 2 won't be able to compete even with Ray reconstruction against the raw compute of the PS5 Pro but it's not trying to neither.

I don’t see the point in a digital only SKU when the mfg cost would be essentially the same for both models. To give switch lite a $100 price cut they removed the IR camera and haptic motors, shrank the screen, used a smaller capacity battery and created a smaller unibody plastic casing . I don’t see how removing just the cartridge slot would shave $50 off the price of the console so I don’t think there’s much truth behind that rumor.

I was planning to eventually get a PS5 but if most rumors turn out to be true about Switch 2 then I would honestly prefer a Switch 2 over PS5. We're finally about to have a Nintendo system that can play most of it not all big 3rd party games along with Nintendo's 1st party games, plus it will be another hybrid system being able to be played on a TV or in portable mode. That sounds like a more attractive system than PS5 in my opinion.

Pretty much all official game publications said the same thing about Nintendo showcasing the Matrix Unreal Engine 5 demo running with ray tracing behind closed doors. I do have to say, I was always of the opinion that Nvidia made Ray Reconstruction for Nintendo and then baked it back to their own GPUs. Mostly because it's weird that they did develop 3.0, as in Frame Generation, exclusive to RTX 30 series and beyond, but then DLSS 3.5, as in Ray Reconstruction, available for all RTX cards.

It wasn't that they made it for Nintendo as much as Nvidia is awful at explaining the numbers. DLSS 3.0 works on all cards, but Frame gen doesn't. Frame Gen isn't DLSS 3.0 but a feature introduced in it. DLSS 3.0 also introduced new model presets for developers to use that has helped improve stability for lower resolutions . DLSS 3.5 has DLSS FG still as a subset option, and still only for 40 series cards (FG never worked on 30series gpus). Ray reconstruction was/is currently targeted for path tracing because it helps when a game has multiple denoisers for things like reflections, shadows, and global illumination. Currently, it still doesn't work in CB 2077 without path tracing because it needs more training for single model use. The next game that will have it is another path traced game with Alan Wake 2. Even with Config tweaks in CB2077 it looks a lot better than the stock denoiser on a 3080 but has a 14% perf drop which isn't great compared to the path tracing implementation where it has no perf drop and sometimes 3-5% better perf.

People seem to be very confused about the various DLSS versions. The 3.5 additions of ray-reconstruction actually work on almost all Nvidia cards from the 2000 series onward but currently the feature is really only useful for path-tracing which is very hardware intensive and not used in many games. Frame gen is something limited to 4000 series Nvidia cards and will likely not be included in Switch 2 not only because it’s chip is likely based on 3000 series cards but mostly because frame gen works best when you’re already over 60 FPS and you’re trying to push to 120 or higher.

They will absolutely have frame gen. It is true it's proportional (somewhat anyways) to base fps but they have already shown cased it,my guy. This chip is a hybrid design. It is based off of ampere raster wise. But it has some newer updates to the RT and tensor cores, memory management etc that are in line with 40 series.

@@johnnyringo35 I doubt they will have Frame Gen. One thing that a lot of people ignore with FG, beyond needing the love lace optical flow analyzer, but FG needs a VRR display. If FG is in handheld the handheld display also needs to have VRR support. This adds costs. Then consumers also need to ensure the display supports VRR to use the feature when docked. That adds friction and more explaining which isn't a good user experience. Its possible they add it for the handheld only mode, but then again the vrr display adds to the BOM and we can see they are trying to squeeze the BOM down with moving to LCD again. Why increase your manufacturing cost by adding in a VRR display. Why increase your R&D cost with moving over the love lace optical flow accelerators to the new SoC? It wouldn't make any sense and I doubt we will see it. I hope to be wrong because all of my displays support VRR, but I wonder how many consumers understand VRR and if the TV they have has it.

Ray Reconstruction is supported on every RTX GPU, it's denoising using the Tensor Cores that were introduced in Volta/Turing. If Switch 2 has Tensor Cores it supports Ray Reconstruction. Whether it's powerful enough to use it in games is another thing, because it's more expensive than standard DLSS.

You guys didn't consider in the discussion about two different SKUs the fact that Nintendo game "cartridges" are basically SD cards and a device to read them is stupidly cheap. Removing the slot for "cartridges" would probably not have any impact on the final price of the product, especially if you consider the high price of the most expensive components such as the CPU, this miracle GPU that can use advanced NVidia techniques even though it only consumes 5W-10W. , etc. There is no trade off for the consumer here, if the removed component has an almost negligible cost, Nintendo's ability to offer a discount on the "simplified" version will also be negligible.

Also, I dont get how it was so hard to understand that the two different sku's and only one being backwards compatible... It means PHYSICALLY BACK COMPAT. If there is an E-Shop, then back compat games on that will work on both sku's. But if you own a game on a cartridge, then you would only be able to play it on the more expensive version. That makes perfect sense to me anyways. I was thinking you would have to rebuy any old Switch games again digitally.... But they would probably let you redownload games linked to your account. So the back compat thing would only be about physical games I suppose.

Just having BC is nice but honestly, if we don't better performance out of BC, that would be a massive shame. There are so so many Switch games I am holding out on that really needs good consistent frames. The impossible ports like Witcher 3 and Doom actually looking and playing better than the ps4 version. Age of Calamity and other newer Nintendo Musou games at rock solid 60 fps. You also have Astral Chain which definitely needs 60 fps or the Pokemon games just getting that brute force performance improvement across the board. More so than from ps4 to ps5, Next Gen Switch giving us boosted performance across the board for Switch game is a must. It could be a combination of broader fps boost and curated selection to get that next gen patch.

Glad you both understood the easy benefits of having the digital sku and mentioning the means to provide something cheaper and get a head start on cultivating that digital only ecosystem. There was a lot of talk about the Tegra T239, but it makes much more sense to me that they are going for a custom SoC with a recent feature set after the runaway success of the Switch. Why start on the back foot when you have the power and market share to choose a much better part?

What do we think about screen type? I would be very upset to see a non OLED at launch with an OLED held for year one/two edition. We already did this with the current gen. I’d rather see the option at launch. Physical edition, OLED version or all digital+LCD as the affordable model. Then maybe the all-digital gets a screen update later in the gen?

Do enjoy these podcast from you both hoping for a digital sku, especially how games are sold in different regions, sometimes it's cheaper to get them digital than physical. An example where I'm from physical games can cost about 170/180 dollars. Find it cheaper to snag that digital release of the game. Though I hope if they do have 2 skus that both have backwards compatibility across them both.

Obviously digital only wouldnt have physical BC, but both would have digital BC, which is far more likely to be included as it would be downloaded from eShop rather than bc via unique cartridge slot. In fact I wager physical BC is a no go. Unless the catridge slot supports 2 formats

Personally, while I think the two skew Switch 2 digital / non digital is possible, I feel that they'll not do this. Nintendo still seems to focus their business model on Japan, and Japan still has dominant physical sales. I think they'll go one model and buck the two skew approach. Maybe not, just my prediction. But if they donoffer a cheaper all digital skew, I'll buy it. All my Switch games are digital anyways.

The reasons here for not possible with backwards on one skew makes no sense. Offcourse that could be the case! There is no backwards compatibility on the digital only version because you can not insert the cartridge, old switch games are not available on the eshop. The disc version can play the old cartridges. What's hard to understand about that?

Well, by ditching the dock and add the controller as built in the chip they were able to decrease switch price in 1/3. If they really want a cheaper sku, the easier route is to go this way. Doesnt even need to reduce size or cap the clock speed, or remove compatibility with dock, like the switch lite.

I think having a cardridge slot is very likely far cheaper than having a disc drive, thats the reason I believe there is no only digitial switch. the other reason is that nintendo is a very japanese company and in the japanese market, physical media is still rather big. anyways great podcast! Digital Only models aren't released because disc drives or cartridge slots are expensive (they're not). They're released because companies make more money from digital and can stop users from buying second-hand games (which they make no money from).

Nintendo is the most physical of them all, with 4x LABO, Mario Kart Live r.c. cars and MK steering wheels, Ring Fit Adventure, hundreds of amiibo, Switch Sports straps, Pokèmon trading cards, Kawashima touch pens, Super Nintendo World, and all their merchandise. A digital-only version of a console certainly is not on Nintendo's minds as long as games with physical extensions are released.

@@faustianblur1798 disc drives are considerably more expensive than "cartdrige slots", however. Like, at least an order of magnitude more expensive, but probably much more. If you consider that the board has extremely sophisticated things like CPU, GPU, high speed RAM, etc., then an SD Card reader probably doesn't even cost 0.1% of its total value, that's what Nintendo would "save" by removing the "cartdriges" reader (they are actually just SD cards). You can't compare this to a Bluray player.

I believe Nintendo will launch with two models; one being the regular Switch 2 which will play physical games still and the other being the Switch 2 Lite that’ll be smaller but just as powerful, portable only and all digital. Hopefully both can be bc with your physical and digital library and maybe Nintendo has some sort of program where they let you convert your physical games from the Switch 1 to digital on Switch 2 if you decide to get the all digital model. But I know that won’t happen lmao.
