I followed video 2, 3, and 4 to replace the valve cover on my 2002 nissan maxima (vq35de). I also had the Hanes Service Manual which confirmed the torque specs and tightening sequence for installing the valve cover. Make sure you have the proper torque wrench and a flexible wrench like the one used in this video to get to the brackets behind the plenum. Thanks a million for putting this together. The dealer wanted over 900 to do the job!

Thanks for posting this. This is fantastic work. I still think it's a rather poor design from the maintenance perspective though (and that's putting it nicely). If you could have showed us the backside of that manifold after removal I think it would have put some of those rear attachment bolts and accessories in perspective. Many thanks.

Man, I'm gonna change my left side and see to what extent that slows my leak. Seeing how much work is involved here, I don't think I'm up for the right side on a vehicle with almost 200K miles anyway, and I sure as heck am not paying whatever it would cost (probably over $500) to have this done for me when all it will do is save some oil and keep my engine and driveway cleaner. Heck, oil is relatively cheap anyway. I'll probably switch back to conventional oil at my next oil change as well. That'll save a little and might slow down the leak from the right side a bit as well.

How do you get those green electrical connectors unplugged, that are in the back of the plenum on the passenger's side? Like you I bend that bracket open a bit to get the bolt out. Finally got the plenum out. It looks like wires chafing against the intake valve timing solenoid. I need to get in there where those wire bundles are and get better access to see what needs done to fix them. I don't understand how the connectors unlock. Any help? Thanks.
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 9 жыл бұрын
If I remember, the green connectors had a middle tab that you can use a small flat heat to push on it and disconnect. I just don't remember it being an issue. Getting that bolt holding the bracket was the difficult part I had.

Wow, this was so much work for spark plugs. I made the mistake of checking out an Odyssey spark plug video first...big mistake. It was so easy!! I am afraid of what this is going to cost me to have fixed in my 05' Nissan Quest. I can't do it myself so paying someone is my only option. Can anyone tell me what a fair price for that is? I feel like I was overcharged when I had my water pump and timing chain replaced a year ago so I am cautious to spend too much again. I am considering just using this as a sign that it's time to trade up.

Bro, I was quoted $285 just to replace my cylinder 3 spark plug.. I was so confused, a fucking $4 spark plug costing $285 to replace.. It's like they built these cars thinking spark plugs last forever! I'm so fucking pissed off, I remember a few yrs ago I had a Toyota Camry and I literally changed ALL the spark plugs in 15 mins.. I just had my timing chain replaced 3 months ago ($710, which is a huge discount considering I was quoted over $1200 by 3 different places) 4-5 months before that was the high pressure power steering hose ($328 parts and labor), just had my rear breaks and one of the rotors replaced 2 weeks ago ($115 parts and labor)

hello thank you very much for your video, I have a PO303, Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected, I pay a lot to somebody to change the spark plugs, but the error still there, so it must be the coil so I need to do it again, but with your video I think I can do it, the guy said that he found some oil in one of the spark plugs (3 or 5), so what I will need to do to fix that problem too? Do I need to change the electric harness? is yes what I need to do? Thank you very much. if you can give me some advice for the wet spark plug and harness too.
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 9 жыл бұрын
If there is oil in the spark plug hole, then the spark plug o-ring on the valve cover is leaking. Those o-ring are not serviceable which means you need to replace the valve cover (as seen done in my video)

Jorge Lopez Don't think you need to replace the wiring harness unless it's cut or damaged. Many of these smaller unique parts can only be specially ordered through your Nissan dealer. If your wallet allows, stick with the Nissan OEM parts.
@eh2688
@eh2688 9 жыл бұрын
Replace your plugs to start, a little oil is not uncommon. Won't prevent your engine from working. To fix you need to replace your valve cover seals. Probably missfire due to oil being on the spark plug. I had a p0301 the other day, fixed it by replacing the plugs. I fount oil in cylinder 5. Permanent fix replace valve seals. Temp replace spark plugs.

I'm in nyc a little to far. It is a extremely simple job, they have better diys. The valve seal is a little more work then the spark plugs. You can have everything done in 3 hours roughly first time. Just make sure you have all the tools. 12mm 10mm 5/8ths spark plug socket, flat head, socket extender and a t30 torques. Just look at the plenum make sure you disconnect all the hoses. Make sure you disconnect the sensor clips. Completely remove to get access to the valve covers.

Car manufacturers design car parts to periodically fail. Then they stuff that engine in so tight, you can barely reach anything. They don't want you to be able to fix your own car. Then you have to bring it in so they can make $ off the repairs too. They get paid twice.

+Mike Zaldivar Almost every transverse minivan engine has the same design...even my previous Pontiac Montana. They have to cram a ton of crap under that engine and something has to give.

+Mike Zaldivar And you're talking about 100,000 mile spark plugs, so this might be a once per ownership thing. Doesn't make it easier, but puts it in perspective.
