There's a great book; Tune Your Chess Tactics Antenna by FM Emmanuel Neiman, that is based around identifying these "signals" so your brain can spot tactics in games. Your video demonstrates this perfectly, thank you.

This video made me think of another video that I’d think would be really cool. One thing most beginners and even advanced players struggle with in the opening is refuting weird/dumb/non theoretical moves. The feeling that you know the move is not theory and probably really bad but you don’t know how to punish it is pretty devastating and could really bring one’s morale down (I’ve felt this a lot) it also sucks when you don’t punish the inaccuracies, they get a position they never should have gotten, and guess what, you’re losing. I think a video like that would be really cool if there isn’t one like that already. Again, great video, i think one thing that really helped with tactics is the “checklist” are there any checks? No. Are there any captures? No. Are there any attacks? No. Play a solid natural move, but before you do, can they check you? No. Can they capture anything? No. Can they create a strong attack/threat? No. Ok, play the move.

Not very difficult, but good exercises! As for number 2: there are also 1... Ra7 and 1... Kg7 to calculate, but they both lead to an immediaty mate. My only sliht inacurracy was that after 1 ... Ra7, 2 Bc3+ Rg7 3 Rxf8++ is mate, but I instead intended 3 Nf5 Nxb8 4 Bxg7+ Qxg7 5 Nxg7 Kxg7 6 Qd4+ picking up the knight on a4 with a supereasy win, but not a checkmate.
@NidusFormicarum2 жыл бұрын
@@theworldofwit4214 Yes, that's what I went for. In number 2: Note that after 1 ... Kg7 2 Qg5+ Kh8 we have no fewer than 4 different mates in 1!

Take away is the stepping stone method for calculating moves. Also Knowing that a thing is possible and seeing the patterns as you work your students to the solution is key. Finding those patterns during a game under time pressure… well that is golden. Manipulation of the game to end up with the patterns on the board as you do is next level.

In fact, I like to verbalize internally what is going on the game, so I get a better understunding of the position and its less likely that I miss something.

Before checking with engine (promise)…and this is tricky. 1. Rh4 defending mate and attacking queen. Difficult first move, but opens Queen to smothered mate ideas as well. …Qxh4 renewing mate threat. 2. Qg8+ starting smothered mate attack. 2…Rxg8 leads directly to mate by 3. Nf7+. Prolonging the agony is 2…Kxg8, 3. Ne7+, Kh8 is forced, 4. Nf7+, Rxf7 5. Rc8+, Rf8 6. Rxf8#.

Woo hoo... took about 15 mins but I got both homework puzzles! 1) starts with Nxd6+ (discovered check with the Queen). Black's King has 2 moves only: Kf8 or Kh8. Kf8 is mate in 1 with Qf7#. Kh8 will go into the regular smothered mate pattern with: Nf7+, Kg8. Nh6++, Kh8. Qg8+, Qxg8. Nf7#. (There's also the Kf8 move possibility in there too). 2)This one was tricky and took most of the time as the first ideas I had once I visualized 5-6 moves in and couldn't see a finish I had to start over with different ordering etc and different candidate moves... but I found this line eventually: Qxa8, Qxa8. Rb8+, Qxb8. Bc3# I find I'm not horrible at puzzles.. it just takes me a fair bit of time to find them sometimes (the harder lines)... but when you're playing a 5/5 game for example, I don't have the 15 mins needed to go through the lines so it comes down to wether or not I happen to find the correct line first vs the 20th line I try
@NMRobertRamirez2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks a lot for sharing your answers 🙌 However, you almost got them 😎 For # 1, the final Nf7+ is not mate because the queen can capture Qxf7. FOr # 2, after Rb8+, they can play Kg7 instead of taking your rook 🥸
@Hassy1717172 жыл бұрын
@@NMRobertRamirez k so I'm not nearly as good at tactics as I thought lol :( I'll have to look at 1 again some more... but for 2 I'd be fine with Kg7. I'll take back the Queen which is a favourable exchange for me... but I'm guessing there's still a mate line I'm missing. Damn this game!
@Hassy1717172 жыл бұрын
2nd attempt for #2: Qc8+, Qg7(to block). Rb8+, Rxb8. Bc3 (lining up bishop and queen, if queen takes queen then bishop recaps with mate... so black has to defend), Rg8. Now Nf7 should be mate cause queen can't capture as it's pinned by my queen/bishop.
