Great job Ford for designing a fuel pump that is almost impossible to get out of the tank. Engineers should have to work on this stuff before it is put into production.

I had an 02 5.3l that kept giving me left or right bank lean codes, but ran fine. I finally borrowed the fuel pressure kit from Autozone and tested 48 instead of the recommended 54 pressure. For WOT, since the O2s are not reported then, look at the reported final spark timing. If the timing is lower than it should be it is because the fueling is off and the engine is knocking so the knock sensors pull the timing. So then check the fueling. Love your videos!

Had an '80's Toyota that idled & rev'd fine (in Park) but couldn't get out of its own way; top speed about 30 MPH. Pulled up my shade tree & tried to diagnose the problem. Replaced in-line fuel filter, rebuilt carb, ran gas tank dry & refilled with name-brand gas....no change. Checked timing, new distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, wires. Wasn't misfiring either. One of my worst ' head scratcher ' ( more like pull hair out ) troubleshooting jobs was where I put another engine in my sister's car, hooked everything up, and it ran but only dead slow idle. If you touched the gas it quit. I went over everything till I was pulling hair out then after thinking , it occurred to me that the old engine blew a lot of oil before destruction, then the car sat a few months. I pulled the exhaust off the manifold and it fired up like a race car. The old engine gunked up the catalytic converter ( early converter ) and then it sat and the gunk hardened up like asphalt. Another one more from the computer Era was a Ford Zetec engine that managed to run backwards a few turns and in the process have the belt skip 3 teeth. It ran but only had about 20 hp. and it showed up absolutely zero codes.

The transfer hoses on the Fords are next to impossible to both disengage and reconnect when their in the fuel tank. What I do upon installation is I wrap a foot long section of mechanic wire around the offending hose. Then I install the pump. Pulling on the wire, getting it into position, and I grab the hose. Remove the mechanic wire and pop the hose on.

Enjoyed the video. I've got a 1998 firebird 3.8l. koeo the fuel pressure is 35 and leaks down slowly (5 psi in 30 seconds or so). running fuel pressure is 40 psi. has a p0442 code if i jump in and turn the key i have to give it gas to get it to start. if i turn the key on wait 3 seconds it fires right up. is the fuel pump bad? history: i replaced the fuel pressure regulator 12 years ago, fuel pump 5 years ago but not the filter. (had to get my daughter to work and then forgot) in the last year i replaced the upper and lower intake gaskets (coolant leak), pcv, vapor purge cannister valve (broke the old one), air filter, water pump and it needed an icm right after those parts, then started throwing a p0507. no vacuum leaks. i eventually cleaned and reinstalled the old pcv and p0507 went away. I tested the vapor purge cannister by taking the vacuum line off it isn't drawing vacuum at the valve at start up. checked the gas cap it's dry rotted at the oring. waiting for a new one to arrive. all help appreciated. i'm medically disabled and have to do repairs myself. no issues driving so far. not cutting out. runs and drives smooth.

How the heck do you do you route the fuel gauge and close the hood? I need to figure this out. I want to do this on a Camero that we can’t smog to sell due to the fuel monitor not clearing . So it just sits there. It had the wrong GM exhaust system on it where the exhaust actuators were missing and in the wrong locations. We did that to no longer have cylinder deactivation and other codes, flashed the computer, that seemed to have been tuned. There’s actually two GM drive cycles we attempted, put about 1,000 miles on it to clear check fuel monitor. But the investment sits to collect dust n rust.

It revved good up on the top end before and would still stumble on the low to mid-range after the fuel pump change. If it had low fuel pressure from a bad fuel pump, it wouldn't get enough fuel and it would stumble on the top end, when it needs more fuel. Not at low RPM when it doesn't need as much fuel. I would like to know what the fuel pressure was after the fuel pump change. I bet it was about the same. Even if it was an improvement, the behavior of the engine was still the same, so I doubt the new pump was needed. When diagnosing a low power complaint, don't make it any more complicated than it needs to be. Start with the basics and work from there. Look at the age of the vehicle, the mileage and when it was last serviced. The first thing you should have checked is the air filter to see it if was clogged. You would have seen that the filter was missing, you would have installed a filter, and you would have seen a massive improvement. I would bet that improvement would have been so massive that you would not have even considered checking the fuel pressure, let alone changing the fuel pump. If it has enough miles on it, I would check the plugs too. If the owner was too lazy/cheap to put an air filter in it, then It's doubtful they changed the plugs either.

What shocks me is no code for a missing air filter. Perhaps that MAF isn't exactly good? At this point i would recommend to your costumer to have the MAF sensor replaced since you didn't get a code. In reality no filter should have tripped the CEL and set a code if everything is up to par.
@stevemccauley57346 ай бұрын

@@stevemccauley5734 I've seen MAF codes set by pulling the breather then starting it up. Did it once forgetting to put the breather on, MAF still plugged in. It's equivalent to not having the filter in it. Makes sense, considering if the filter gets plugged, it will also set a MAF code. Not saying it will do that on all vehicles but it will on some.

Hey Bobby9195, stop taking calls from the ex wife as she won't listen to your advice. Hello brother 'little Kenny'. Hello to Meg too. Ford and most of the other manufacturers used to make things simple to work on (1960's and into the 70's) but then they got upset with all of the emissions and safety demands by the Federal Government and California Resource's Board and went to the OBD 1, followed in 1996 with the OBD 2 system and now all of the 5 volt modules on board that control the operation of everything. Hey Kenny, you sure do go to Mexico a lot. Is the proving ground there getting visited by someone who just doesn't care and leaves their glass there? About that arm cut, I'm so glad that you healed. So, you're a medic too! Kenny, where are your gloves when pulling that pump out of the tank? I really appreciate your systematic approach to an issue like this Ford Transit had. Your experience qualifies you to be a MASTER MECHANIC/TECHNICIAN. You must be ASE Certified because you sure do know your stuff!!! I love the Fox bodied Mustang too, but 8 of them, wow. I always wanted a Mustang SSP as used by the Police. I have never understood why Ford given the history of the Mustang back to 1964 as a 1965 model hasn't always had the simpler body style like the original as a 2 door sedan instead of the fastback roof styling. I say give the customer a choice! I want to go to "Mexico" with you someday before I am done on earth! I would definitely clean the throttle body. "KEEP WRENCHING" my brother. BTW, you are also a perfectionist...not a bad thing...I am too.
