For a serious shortwave listener this receiver has too many flaws to be a good radio to own. I used it a lot to continue my observations but I would use other radios before this one for serious listening

It does have a nice signal strength meter!

It 'looks' nice, but it's pretty functionally useless in practice due to poor implementation.

I've always loved radios with analogue meters since my 1st real shortwave radio. [ Sanyo RP8880 ] I have quite a collection of shortwave portables and 2 Communications recievers and, Not one has an analogue meter on them.

I just want a desktop radio that looks like this, but actually lives up to its promised specs. What's out there?

I just got my hands on an Eton E1XM and I have to say, I am loving it! I have a decent collection of high end portables including the Tecson 501x, Sangean ATS-909x2, Sony ICF-SW77, and the Sony 2010d. I like the "portable" form factor, ie. battery operated, internal antenna. Mute while tuning is a no-go. Outside of that, anything high end on the portable side, I am game. Having said that, the other two radios I am interested in are the Satellite 800 and the Sony ICF-SW55, even tho the Sony is just a smaller variant of the SW77 that I already have, with less features and functionality. I wanted to hate the Eton E1XM, but I just can't. It is so good. Yes, it's big and heavy, which is probably it's biggest "flaw," aside from quality control issues early units had. It is far more sensitive than any of the portables I mentioned above, it's active sync is just simply amazing (it locks onto even the weakest of signals without a problem) and when I listen, there is very little fading. Almost everything is intelligible and I don't have the constant "wash" of static every 10-20 seconds I get with any other portable, and this is using the whip. SSB is great as well, and is one of the few portables that offer both LSB, USB, and dual SSB. Did I mention, it is the only portable I know of that offers variable Pass Band Tuning in 0.1 Mhz step increments (up to 2 + or - as I recall)? It is immensely useful for selectivity, but strangely, makes signals that are not crowded, far more intelligible as well, provided you tune it correctly. Simply put, there is the E1XM, then the other four I mentioned in the second sentence when it comes to high end. The E1XM is just heads and tails above those other four, not that the other four arent good, just that the E1XM is several steps above. It's too bad the remake unit is so terrible, because we really need the E1XM to be produced again without the quality control issues and with RDS. Simply put, the E1XM, if it were still being manufactured today, would be the radio to buy for those looking for "portable" and willing to spend money. Interesting story, look up the Grundig Satellite 900, it is an updated version of the E1XM that was never released, too bad, because this would have been the portable to end the portable high end market.

Ok, I finished watching the video, yes, the Tecsun pl-330 is a fantastic receiver but my preference would have to be the Tecsun pl-368 due entirely to form and function. Either receiver is a winner at their respective price-points.

Not sure if people even listen. You made your criticism of this radio crystal clear. Not sure you ever said you had “fallen in love” with it. People see it in use, and leap to the assumption that it must now be cherished. I have caught flack in the past by saying I “liked, but didn’t love” the Sony ICF-2010, which lead some to believe I must have had a poor copy. No, it was fully recapped and aligned by a professional. Will I use it? Yes. Do I love it? No. Social media, for some reason, makes followers think everything is love, or hate, with no room for anything in between. Thanks for another great video.

I agree. Thank you 😊 very much. I had the Grundig version some years ago, and did sell mine at a Hamfest for a reduced price. Having owned, and now having many radios in my 60 years of listening, this one is all "showy and no blowy". 73 de W2CH Ray, New Hampshire.

I think what made people think you might have loved this radio was because the new Satellit turned out to be rubbish but then you got this one and decided to keep it instead. I did find myself wondering whether this was a worthy replacement for the Satellit, but sure you never said that it was and it makes sense that it has flaws of its own.

I purchased this model radio from Ham Radio Outlet. When tuning the stations the sound completely muted out. So I returned the radio. Received another elite. The same problem occurred. At that point I asked for a refund,

Is this the only rack mount general coverage receiver available today? I use the term "available" loosely, as it seems they are not in stock with most retailers. Rack mounting is the easiest form factor for building an "information center" type operating space, and it really adds to utility. Such a shame that a receiver with so much potential falls so flat, and especially at such a ridiculous price point. For another hundred bucks, I can have a transceiver. -K5SFC

This is not a rack mount, it's just a big tabletop and seems to have been discontinued , no one is carrying it anymore
@jdschauss6 ай бұрын
@@OfficialSWLchannel It is not an ACTUAL rack mount, but it is in the STYLE of a rack mount. My point is that you can stack equipment like that, whereas you really cannot with portables.

Hello I have a question about a shortwave radio. I purchased a Sangean 909 a while ago and was wondering your opinion of it? I live in California and do get some stations in but was wondering if I should buy an external antenna like the MLA -30. Your thoughts on getting an external antenna? Thank you, Louis
@OfficialSWLchannel Жыл бұрын
A MLA 30 would help improve reception for sure and if you live in high noise it will help even more

I purchased this radio and it was a disaster fortunately I have managed to return it. It was very noisy on SW and not as it should be. I found that doing a reset would correct the problem but next time I used it it would be bad again. I agree with you that the bandwidth problem made listing to CW a really painful experience. I think the H 501x will be more suitable for my listening pleasure if I can find one in Canada.

It's such a pretty face! Seriously. It is an attractive radio, who doesn't like the analog signal meter? I wish you lived closer. My neighbor just gave me a Grundig 960 Classic*. LOL. Yeah, say no more, I would love to hear you review that beast. Really like your reviews. Thanks. *The 960 Classic is a nostalgic reproduction ( late 1990's early 2000's?) of an amazing sounding radio from the 1950's.

The Eton 750 is only good in low rx/tx areas, useless with a good antenna which makes it pointless in most of the world.

I would think that if you have any critical thinking skills of any sort you wouldn't jump to any assumption or conclusion watching these videos short of what's explicitly said during the course of the video. Apparently critical thinking skills are in short supply according to Gilles and, in this case, I happen to agree.
