When you're hunting you want to use the right weapon to one shot them. That's how you get a perfect pelt, you also have to check them to see the quality before shooting. Then when you skin them if he makes a bundle like he did with the bison then that's all you can take. If you skin something like a deer it will just take the pelt then you can grab the body.

John, here’s a huge tip for hunting - go to West Elizabeth and use the map Hosea gave you. Find and hunt the Legendary Buck. Take it to a trapper and have him craft the buck antler trinket. This will vastly improve the quality of pelts you can get when you hunt.

Between taking breaks to do housework, cook and spend time with the family, it takes me the whole day to finish a 3+ hour episode. I watch the bulk of the video in the morning and at night while the house is quiet. But I am LOVING the longer videos in this series! I do wish he'd upload RDR2 every day, but I understand why he breaks it up. I think my favorite things about this playthrough so far is John's devotion to being a good horse dad to Victoria, his sheer audacity at the amount of tattletales that keep reporting his crimes, and his utter neglect of his characters hygiene! 🤣

RDR2 content is not my content (I suspect if you are enjoying all the varied challenges in this game, you'll like GTA5 and it's story and pacing even much more), but the steady flow, and the uncut videos (this channel is a godsend, I love seeing, and hearing, all the "how we got there", it feels so much more real, helps to connect to your videos even more) have been saving my mind, esp with all the election effects recently. Just wanted to reiterate the hunting tips but with more detail. In order. 1. If the animal species isn't studied, study it and immediately check compendium for the weapon to use for perfect pelt. 2. After the species is studied it will show how many stars the pelt is worth before killing, if under 3, itll never be perfect so if going for perfect you need to scout around first. 3. You can lasso animals for knife kills. This helps for perfect pelts. Some cannot be lassoed but you'll have to research that.

I wrote a big spiel in the last episode but there are missable missions but the Sean one isn't one (I'm writing this at the start so idk what happens) Yellow bubbles are required and white are optional. Some white ones will disappear as you finish yellow bubbles and some are time related and if you miss your chance you miss your chance. Sometimes they are dependent on the time of day/if enemies are around. But you can yes miss some missions. Also: When you run things over with your horse or through the bushes, the horse doesn't like that and it can affect things.

If you don't want to kill people, you can always lasso and hog tie them. Also, with the dead eye, I'd recommend activating it while NOT aiming at anyone directly, then you move the reticle to all the targets you wish to hit. It'll automatically mark them as the reticle passes over them. There may be a setting to make it so you manually mark them as well as opposed to it automatically marking them just by passing over them

In the dominos games: the goal is to play all your tiles. If both players run out of moves without running out of tiles, the dots on each domino (called pips) are counted. The person with the least number of pips in their "hand" then wins. So ideally, you want to play high numbers first.

Hey, John! Leaving a couple of tips for ya just in case you’re reading the comments. 1. There are gold bars scattered around the map in case you’re running low on funds. Exploring a bit will help you find them. 2. It’s a bit of a chore, but if you dedicate your time to hunting and craft yourself a Legend of the East satchel from Pearson, it’ll let you carry 99 of each item. 3. You can read Arthur’s journal for some background lore and to see our boah draw some cool stuff. 4. In case you’re stuck somewhere without your horse, you can ask some wagon or cart drivers for a ride to the nearest town. 5. Hunting in this game is incredibly detailed. You’ll first need to scout an animal with your binoculars to see if it’s got 3-stars. Then, you have to use the right weapon to kill it and shoot it in the head to ensure you keep the pelt perfect when you skin it. 6. I’m glad you’re not rushing through the game. It really is meant to be played as slow as possible to really take in the world and the story. Loving the playthrough so far!

in your wheel there’s an option to set up camp. cooking a few meats you harvest makes for an easy source of health & stamina core refills on the go. Sleeping, alcohol and smoking restores deadeye. but if you happen to find thyme in the wild, seasoning meats with it also gives it a deadeye core refill property along with its usual health and stamina. Edit: just reached the halfway point and looks like you figured cooking out, nice! Happy hunting 🦌

Animals have a starting star level, only a fraction of them start as a 3 star. Then you have to make sure you use the approriate weapon to kill them, otherwise the star will drop. Check the animal in the compendium and the small text in the corner of the screen will tell you the right weapon.

I love seeing comments that say watching you play inspired them to get the game and start playing. It’s truly an amazing game. I’ve probably spent 500+ hours trying to 100% the game and I loved every second of it. I know the game starts off slow, but honestly I would recommend everyone try the game. I particularly love it because I’ve got a degree in zoology and I LOVE how much attention to detail they put in when it comes to the wildlife. The animal calls, their behavior, the information about them, it’s all incredible. Definitely one of my favorite parts of this amazing game is the attention to detail when it comes to the wildlife. 4:12 Certain side quests only appear at certain times of the day. Also, some side quests are possible to miss out on as you progress through the main storyline (yellow quests). In addition to that, the random events that happen, the blinking white dots that sometimes appear on the map, are entirely missable and pretty unique. Some will reappear at times, but I’ve honestly seen ones in other’s playthroughs that I never got, despite spending an absurd amount of time playing this game. So in my opinion, they’re always worth checking out. 12:50 Love the selfies with Victoria. 17:08 Arthur, you never closed the gate. The pigs are gonna escape. 😭 28:49 Arthur falling off his horse will never fail to make me laugh. 33:04 When you kill people on horseback, or if you’re bold enough to just walk up to people’s hitched horses in towns, you can loot from their horse’s saddlebags. Both sides of the horse can be looted but I would highly recommend saving or making sure you have full health before you do. Because horses will kick the shit out of you at times whenever you try. You can soothe them, but just be careful because if they hit you more than once, or if you’re low on health, they will kill you. 33:44 Honor went down because I believe that was a civilian. That will always bring honor down, but killing gang members won’t. Same goes for looting civilians versus gang members. 34:58 Would highly recommend checking your inventory fairly often to make sure you aren’t full on premium cigarettes. Either smoke them in mass or discard because you always want to be able to loot them when given the chance. Because you are trying to get full sets of cigarette cards, so each card you loot/buy gets you closer to that goal. 35:44 If the bodies of dead animals or people go too far out of range of your mini map they disappear. 37:43 Be careful with characters that appear hostile like this. If they tell you to go away and you stay around them too long they will eventually start shooting at you. 49:05 If you use dead eye while not holding a weapon, it is kind of like Witcher senses. It will highlight items you can loot in yellow. Also going in first person helps you spot stuff better too. 54:15 Since the eye symbol is no longer appearing on the map for the npc, he’s given up on trying to turn you in. I believe he ended up turning you in because you left him hog tied (they eventually break out). I think if you had let him run away while he was just a white dot and not an eye, you would have been fine. 1:06:43 Clicking the left stick about every 10-15 seconds will restore some of your horse’s stamina. Can also do that while riding your horse at slower speeds to increase your bond with them. You filled the core of your horse’s stamina, which will help the outer core charge over time. But because you were in a chase and had no chance to stop and recover you needed to not feed your horse but instead go to the part of the wheel above the food. Those tonics will refill outer health and stamina bars in a pinch. Because once it starts drawing stamina or health from your inner core, if they get too low, your horse will die. This is another reason why it’s always good to have horse reviver on hand. 1:08:19 To be totally fair, quick draw is so hard to get the hang of. I still suck at it after all this time. 😅 1:12:43 Unfortunately if a mission requires someone else needing to ride on your horse, they’ll just knock the carcass off, LOL. That and if the carcass gets too rotted, I believe they fall off themselves. 1:16:39 Don’t sweat it too much, you’ll come across them later on. 2:13:26 👀 3:01:45 Could have carried it to him in your hands, but all good! Only registers stuff in your bag or on your horse.

Plus core and cowboy to everyone! Hunting tip! If you only hunt for meat than it doesn’t matter, but if it is for pelts, it helps to check out animals with binoculars or by pointing weapon on them - animals are not always three stars, and to not de-star them, Arthur also needs to get a clean kill in a heart or head with specific weapon type. You can learn more about what is needed by studying the animals. Good hunting! 🦌

I haven't seen anyone say it so far, but regarding the witness that kept running away that you grabbed with the lasso. If you just chase them down on foot and jump on them NFL style, you can then threaten them on the floor or punch them until they agree not to report you (and rob them too). So long as there's no other witnesses watching you you're generally okay to walk off after that. Kinda stupid that using the lasso prevented you doing all that, but Rockstar and their weird ass mechanics! (Only seen half the video so far, so if you know this already, my bad lol).

Few tips: Getting baths by washing up, changing your clothing, or even getting different hair cuts, can impact the dialogue responses of the NPCs around you. You can also just never do these things lol, and simply being uncleanly can also give you different dialogue options. They really thought of everything. Don't forget that you can create campfires mostly anywhere in the wild. Which is good for crafting food for yourself, restoring your stamina, and resting to change the time of day. You don't always have to lasso someone to stop them. You can also tackle them from any side. You'll begin to interrogate them from that point, similar to those story segments earlier on where you had the option to threaten, or punch them.

Hi, John, I've been watching your playthrough since I'm currently stuck at home with a second degree burn on my hand. It'll take me a while to type all of this out, but I'd like to leave some hot tips for the future that'll help your playthrough, things to understand. First up: Cores. Arthur and his mounts have 2 core types; inner and outer. The inner core determines how fast the outer core replenishes. It works like this: your outer core will deplete first, once it is fully depleted, it'll start depleting the inner core. To naturally restore the outer core, you need to eat or drink whatever restores the inner core, and that'll slowly restore the outer core. Or, option 2 is to drink grey tonics (non-fortifying), those instantly restore outer cores. You can increase the outer cores in various ways, though I recommend the health and dead-eye cores for early game. One of the easiest ways is rowing a boat in circles on the right side of the Lake Owanjila dam (northwest of Strawberry) Dead-eye is easily increased by shooting flying birds (in dead-eye). Secondly, when opening your items satchel, every tonic is sorted in the order of your cores (health-stamina-dead eye) Tonics fortify the outer cores depending on their strength (1 - 3), it helps a lot to stock up on health tonics and drinking these before engaging multiple enemies, since they help you tank a lot more damage. RDR2 is not really a game that wants you to be a hero and barell roll into shit. Note: You can also fortify the cores of your horse if you're riding one not fit for gun fights, tho as long as you circle enemies with enough distance, your horse should be fine. I'd also like to add that there is a mechanic in the game called 'phasing', this means that if you tap the button to make your horse sprint IN synch with your horse's gait, it'll drain less stamina. Listening to the horse's breathing, or watching when its hind legs kick back or listening to the hoof beats greatly helps to get in sync with it.

Hey John (spoiler free comment, promise!) So I'm in the middle of my own blind playthrough of RDR2 too 😆 I thought I'd leave a couple tips about hunting that really helped me - Since you seem to be enjoying it too :) - If you read the compendium entries for different animals it tells you which weapons/ammo are best to use for each of them - Binoculars will show you how many stars each animal pelt is worth before you track and hunt it - If its not a clean kill (one head shot) it decreases the star rating of the pelt, so a perfect pelt can get damaged enough to become a poor one - but thankfully the legendary animal pelts cannot be damaged and will always be perfect -if you die/get killed all your pelts and carcases on your horse disappear :( Also, you're not alone, I too was very overwheled and confused at the beginning by all the tutorials and such...! Took me a while to get into the game because of it, but the more you play, the more you get super attached! Anyway, I'm absolutely loving the series so far, looking forward to every new episode! Good huntin' to ya! 🤠

Also, Arthur can climb and jump by pressing whatever your equivalent of square is. I"ve seen you follow the entirety of the Valentine PO's walkway a few times, chuckling and wondering why you didn't just vault over. You can also aim weapons and jump to the side, to worm out of line of sight. You can also, if the lasso is equipped in hand, just press your equivalent of circle to tackle running bounties/enemies to the ground when in close range of them, then it auto-hog ties once they are down. Also, and this is just a little life-hack for melee and brawls, if you squat down and press the grapple button, Arthur will 1HKO whomever you grappled. You can also grab enemies from behind and throw them when you have a side-arm equipped. I also saw you struggle with the cores while chasing Jamie, again, you were feeding you horse, which fills the inner core, your outer core is what was depleted, so you should have given it a tonic. (upper side of the horse tab in the weapon wheel) Another little life hack is to knock out targets before stowing them on the horse. Story mode uses a basic lasso, enemies can undo the rope, and knocking them out reduces that of happening. You do this by aiming a side-arm at your hogtied target and pressing the melee button. Once the reticle turns from red to white, you can be certain they are unconscious and not dead, since you can stomp people to death and you'd want to prevent that (these are RDO life hacks, but still apply to RDR campain) It rarely happens in campaign, like I said, but still useful to know.

Of all games, a cowboy game made John get existential about time 😂 I do agree with you though, 1888 relatively isn’t that long ago.

RDR2 is like the GTA games where random pedestrians will complain or compliment you if you get too close

Tip - for the crafting and shop menus you can keep scrolling down on a lot of these, it will say 8 out of 26 or something like that at the bottom of the list on the right to let you know you can keep scrolling down to see more craftable and buyable items. Also, you want to donate Pearson things for satchel upgrades because you can hold more stuff.

Not sure if anyone has told you, but the small squares on the map are cabins and such you can explore. Always worth checking out.

Love the Red Dead videos John. When you search a place you can use eagle eye and you'll see things highlighted that can be searched and stuff you can grab.

Ahh! I will have to watch this tomorrow. Didn’t see the notification and it’s bedtime. Mostly commenting for algorithm (is that even a thing?) but also to thank John for the upload! Probably gonna start my save this weekend…
