I actually almost did the same thing last year. My dad was pushing a car off a trailer, I was sitting in it with my foot on the brake. There was no brake fluid in it. After a few seconds, he started yelling "BRAKES! THE BRAKES!!!!", and I just replied "I don't have none!!!", while reaching for the hand brake. By the time the (barely working) hand brake got the (engine less) project car stopped, it was within 30cm of a barn wall. lesson learned: Check the brakes _BEFORE_ unloading.

A lot of people don't know,but the legendary Chip Foose had a similar issue where he crashed a Rolls when he was a teenager. He still has the Grille in his Shop. Thanks for a great story.

1980 South East of the UK, first job at 16yrs, a car dealership…… we did Mercedes, Fiat and Toyota. One day, the workshop put a gearbox back into an a 450 SEL 6.9, one remaining job was to adjust the gear linkage. They put an apprentice in the car, lifted it on a four post ramp. The ramps all faced walls with work bench’s, groaning under the SnapOn tools. The car would not start in gear as determined by the selector, so the lad was told to put it in Neutral and start it up. Obviously the linkage was misaligned. The car screeched forwards and went half way through the wall and flattened the tool chests……. 😳🇬🇧 Top skills

At some point in Silver Shadow production, Rolls-Royce eliminated the master cylinder from the braking system. Unlike conventional brakes where pushing the brake pedal actually moves fluid, the brake pedal in a Rolls is connected to a metering valve that lets 3000 psi fluid from the engine driven pumps go into the calipers. There are also pressure reservoirs in the form of nitrogen filled spheres that allow 30-50 presses of the brake pedal with the engine not running or the engine driven pumps not operating but they only last a few years before needing replacement so if you ignore the brake warning lights for long enough and your engine stalls, your brake pedal will do nothing. The brakes are fully redundant with two front calipers per wheel and two circuits per rear caliper, plus two pressure spheres so the likelihood of everything failing at once is basically zero - what probably happened in this story is the guy steering the car used the pedal a bunch of times with the engine off as they were pushing it, so when he needed to stop it rolling away he had used up all the reserve pressure. Pretty dumb for a Rolls-Royce mechanic to do this.

Rolls-Royce licensed its braking and suspension system from Citroen. Same system Citroen used on cars like the CX but a little more simplified.

Totally agree. Although I can’t imagine he would have depressed more than 50 times in that short space. This story tells it was a brand new Rolls-Royce so this would never have happened. And the electric vs brakes is simply stupid. The whole story is questionable and boringly told.

Agreed. I had one of these cars (though mine was an earlier one with the redundant conventional brakes) and did a fair amount of work on the brakes/suspension. There is no link between electrics and the brakes (except for warning lights), as you say they are mechanical and rely on hydraulic pressure, which comes from pumps driven by the engine and is stored in the spheres. In fairness we don't know what was wrong with the car, but it wasn't the lack of electrics which stopped the brakes from working. Your suggestion of him using up all the stored pressure seems unlikely but is the best explanation I can come up with too. Why didn't he use the handbrake?

@@varsas10 A simple explanation is that this story is made up... But, fun fact, a Silver Shadow has an electric parking brake release so when you shift from P to R or D, a solenoid releases the parking brake ratchet and keeps it withdrawn until you shift into P. The parking brake is a foot pedal and you cannot use it as an emergency brake.

BMC- British Motor Cars in Seattle. In Burien, south of Seattle....BBC, Burien British Cars- later BBC Dodge. Now is "Legend Auto Sales." If you go into Sam Hard's shop you'll see a "Legend" dealer plate frame with "Rabbit's Used Cars" stickers on a plastic filler inside.
