You probably know that when you sing that high in your register, muscle memories will affect how you sound significantly. Or, maybe, she just did that on purpose because it sounds more soothing to the ear than a fully compressed head voice, and she didn't need to project her voice like theater singers. I like how she didn't try to be exactly like an opera singer though. She did her own version of the song with airy vocals, runs, riffs and whistle note. this is barely opera, she is not bad, but this is not opera
@xhappyponyxwasmyoldname1395Ай бұрын
@@silkspectre7979 Opera singer here- opera is more so a genre of entertainment than it is a singing style. You wouldn't sing a Rossini aria in the same vocal styling as you would a Purcell, for example. The same logic would apply to musical theatre. People may have an idea that comes to their heads when they hear "musical theatre singing," but Carousel would sound quite bizarre sung with the vocal techniques used in Rent, and vice versa. Wicked is wonderful because it intentionally features roles that span in range and style more than many other musical theatre shows do. Glinda, originally played by opera singer Kristin Chenoweth, was written to be and has always been performed in what some in the vocal world call "legit singing." That is, essentially, a more classical style associated with opera- with purer vowels, a diaphragmatically supported head voice, and less of the chesty or sometimes nasally buzz associated with belting techniques. All that yapping through with, I see no reason why not to refer to her singing here as opera except for the fact that Wicked isn't an opera (that in itself is arguable, but that's a separate conversation topic from this). Perhaps you associate opera with a taller, darker tone with heavy vibrato, but that's simply not Ariana's voice type. She's probably a light lyric soprano, so she's always going to have a softer, lighter, brighter sound as she soars through her upper register.
@PensadorProfundo42Ай бұрын
@@xhappyponyxwasmyoldname1395 the BREATHINESS in the tone is just terrible from an operatic pov, but fine from a pop singing stance. I’ve heard some people say that she was doing a good Kristin impression, but my rebuttal to those comments is that it’s not that Ari was trying to sound like Kristin’s Galinda, but she understands she’s not singing pop music and that to sing a particular role like this requires a different vocal technique. People are so used to Ari’s pop style of singing that her taking a role that’s synonymous with Kristin, people are going to automatically say she’s just trying to do a Kristin voice. But really just she’s a really good singer who just understands the assignment and technique required for Galinda.

this song is so emotional as she mainly sings high notes(meaning in this sense she is still mourning elphaba) And she even hides in a high notes “I’m all alone” The song itself has many meanings, and her vocals in this really show one of those meanings.”Know one mourns the wicked”

That second verse in opera just tickles me the right way
@DoingItOurselvesOfficialАй бұрын
From an operatic technique perspective, she was singing from the wrong place, a little nasal and less from the diaphragm. I also noticed she wasn’t creating the correct vowel sounds with her mouth at points, which would have helped her a lot. Her vocal coach probably didn’t have a background in opera. But damn it’s still incredible. I wish she could have met my old ex opera singer singing teacher. She practically sang instead of speaking, but I don’t even know if she is still alive.

she’s also so breathy and hoarse
@CJosephine13Ай бұрын
Most likely that is how the director/whoever was guiding her vocally on set directed her to sing this way, also technically she isn’t singing opera, but her voice sounds very operatic
@GetWellSoonR.E.M.Ай бұрын
I personally call it “p-opera”. Pop imitating operatic singing. It’s always done that way in any contemporary setting (including broadway) since contemporary singers don’t have to project the voice the way an opera singer without amplification would have too. They just sing with taller vowels like an opera singer would, but without as much support and not as much space and vocal cord closure to amplify the sound the same way a classically trained opera singer would. Given the genre, Ariana did just fine. Even being able to vocalize this high is a feat in and of itself, even if it’s not fully classical technique.

@ yes exactly. I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Thank you for explaining why it sounds so off. I have no experience in singing professionally and I couldn't articulate what I disliked about her version besides "too breathy".

While I am not an Ariana fan, she was absolutely spectacular. The singing , very impressive. I am always Leary of pop stars singing broadway. But she absolutely killed it!. Very Impressive. I truly enjoyed the movie and her performance. A new fan.

i’m so happy more people who aren’t ariana fans get to understand why we love her and stand behind her so much as an artist, despite her personal drama.
@VioletStone100Ай бұрын
@@subwaydaddyI think she did great in the movie and really embodied Glinda, but I still wouldn’t stand behind her as an artist. She has done too much which I personally do not stand behind, and not really explained or addressed her actions.

From the moment I heard she was cast I knew she was the perfect choice. Hairspray Live was the first time I heard her sing naturally without all the electronic processing modern music production adds to vocals. I knew that girl really had a gift.
