2 x 29” electric mountain bikes, upright in the back (front wheels removed) is what swings it for me over a RAV4. That and mechanical AWD, as opposed to a lower powered, separate electric motor. The door opening is very impressive in person. The wood trim looks nice to me. The Honda feels more quality inside than Rav4 and the boot seems more practical because the Rav4 roof line slants at the back which isn't great for large boxy items. I am leaning towards the Honda - the Rav4 is more efficient which is why I'm interested in it but its also quite commonly stolen and has the catalytic converter stolen often (just like the Lexus) - that's a big problem with Toyota and Lexus at the moment and puts me off.

End of July we bought the 2019 RAV 4 Hybrid Limited. A different driving experience compared to the non-hybrid. The acceleration is better as the electric motors kick in first. Mileage is over 40+mpg at fill up. We test drove the CR-V (non-hybrid) and it did have a smooth ride but the engine felt flat. The CR-V design is overdue for an update. My partner, who doesn't really think about cars, said "I doh't like all the silver trim on the Honda, it feels old".

do you like your 2019 hybrid RAV4? my wife and i are debating on the honda CRV... I think Hondas feel cheap...
@jimjimgl35 жыл бұрын
@@GreggK6EGG Hey. Like any car there are things we like about the RAV 4 and somethings that are a little disappointing. The Hybrid handles way better than the gas because of the electric motor. The mileage for me is a below what the sticker reads. It says it should get 38/41 and we are averaging maybe 32 or 35. Still good but I think we are almost only stop-and-go and I think that has an effect on mileage. The engine is a bit noisy. I knew this going in so I wasn't surprised but still I sometimes find myself thinking "I wish it was more quiet". We came from owning a Subaru Outback which was noticeably quieter but still the CVT engine in general is more noisy. The mileage on the Subaru was not great. The sound system we have on the RAV 4 Limited is great. The heater/ AC great. Seats are comfortable. We were considering a Mazda CX but the interior was smaller for cargo than the RAV4. But the Mazda drove really well and had way less cabin noise. We test drove the Honda CRV and we liked the way it drove but the styling felt like it needed a refresh. I think it was 5 years since the last and we didn't want to buy into a model that was soon to have a refresh in design as that has an impact on resale. If you get a chance let me know what you end up buying. The Ford Escape 2020 is a hybrid but we did not test one out since it was the 2019 that was available and we knew a redesign was coming in 2020.

I changed my '14 diesel CR-V for a Rav 4 this year. I test drove both and ended up going for the Rav 4. The spec level I went for in the Rav4 was 3k cheaper on the road than the equivalent (ish) CR-V (Sol in the Rav 4 vs Elegance in the CR-V). I've done ~5 thousand kms of mixed driving on the Rav 4 and am getting 5.5L/100kms. Nobbby must have had the lead boot on for his Rav4 review when he was getting around 9.5l/100?!?!? The Rav 4 has a higher spec relative to the CR-V (things like electric boot are available on lower spec models of the Rav4 than the CR-V. The Rav 4 is noisy as fook if you push it on, hybrids aren't meant to be thrashed me thinks, it is quicker than you'd think though (219HP vs 190HP on the CR-V). The lack of Carplay or Android auto on the Rav 4 is annoying when you consider it's a €40K car, Toyota have said that it will come next year as part of a software upgrade. As always a great review! I have yet to buy my CRV because I'm thinking over the hybrid. In Italy you can get the fake wood trim changed to a dark grey inlay. Also you do not have to pay for parking so maybe that €2500 difference will be made up faster than 5-6 years. I am looking forward to trying one. Drove the petrol and absolutely loved it especially that sporty gear stick which of course the you do not get with the hybrid. Also if you use the clutch well and do not rev too much you can save petrol anyway! Also the petrol version has a bigger boot which is handy for a family man.

€2500 difference over 5-6 yrs is such a dumb reason. You brew your own coffee instead of buying Starbucks will save you that much. A battery will always be another thing that can go wrong but you either put your faith in the Honda brand and take the chances with the reduced running costs (but initial higher price tag) or stick with petrol. Hi Nobby, great review, nice to see what the newer 2019 version has over the outgoing model. I have the 1.6 AWD Diesel version (2015). Just on your fuel economy mentioned for the hybrid, I would typically get between 6.2 and 6.4l/100km in mine for mixed driving. I have gotten a lot lower and during the summer this year I got as low as 5l/100km driving from Castletownbere to Cork with a full boot, 4 adults and 2 bikes on the back. The gap between the parcel shelf and the back seats is to allow for the back seats to recline, I would presume its the same on the 2019 model. The outgoing model was practically a very good car anyway, so not much needed upgrading apart from the dash/controls which looks to have been addressed. Would probably still have one over the Rav, however with the Subaru Forester hybrid coming out in 2020 with a hybrid, this one could shake things up a little. Its definitely on my radar as I've had Subarus before. Would be good if you could get your hands on one when they come out to review it and draw comparisons between it and the CRV & Rav
@NobbyOnCars5 жыл бұрын
You can’t argue with those fuel figures eh?! That’s the thing, the petrol one gets 8l/100 I think if memory serves me so it’s more of a long term keeping the car option I think. I chase up the Subaru I should be able to get my hands on one!
@TomOS19715 жыл бұрын
@@NobbyOnCars You're really only talking about €2.5k difference between equivalent models in the range between their petrol & hybrid models so it does make sense based on the figures quoted that the Hybrid is probably the better option even if you only kept it for 5yrs. My average annual mileage has come down considerably from approx 26,000km to 15,000 per year so for me the next car is going to be a petrol or hybrid. Working out the difference between the CRV petrol & hybrid consumption on my 15,000km per year I would estimate an extra 300l of petrol for the petrol version @ approx €1.50 per litre thats €450. Thats going to take about 6yrs to bridge that gap of the extra €2500 layout. Not sure what the savings would be on the road tax/insurance.

A CR-V SR is an almost exact match for a RAV4 Excel, price, size, specification. I tested both back to back... I agree the CR-V is the SLIGHTLY better car, it rides better, has better screen, better driving aids, better shaped boot, quieter, equal performance. But I bought the RAV4, well as a UK company car, mainly for financial reasons. The substantially lower CO2 of the RAV4 saves me £600 in tax a year. And for some reason (maybe fleet discounts, residuals?) our lease company could provide me with the RAV4 on a 2 year lease for the same price as the CR-V on a 3 year lease (despite identical list prices). So I get a new car sooner and pay less tax meanwhile. The CR-V was better, but not that much better! Also the RAV4 is giving me over 45mpg with no restraint on driving pace.

Good review - what about comparing to Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. That does 45km EV range and 2l per 100km. Also Japanese car. You talk about Hybrids that aren’t plug in, as if that was an advantage or manufacturer has some secret technology that PHEVs don’t have. The reality is they are last generation technology. For those looking to buy a new car, another advantage of PHEVs is half price tolls nationwide and parking in certain locations.
@NobbyOnCars5 жыл бұрын
You have to understand that a lot of ‘normal’ car people don’t understand the differences so I was pitching the review at them more than those of us who are a lot more clued in. Personally I’m not a huge fan of PHEVs, the claimed full EV mode is generally very limited so I’d always say to those who ask either go hybrid or just take the plunge and go EV.
@Garno20005 жыл бұрын
Full disclosure, I own the 2019 Outlander PHEV, it consistently does 45km on full electric charge. I do a lot of mixed driving and average under 3L per 100km, with regularly charging. That includes a lot of motorway driving. The Outlander is a 4 wheel drive PHEV and does that sort of economy. You really should review it. It’s 40k, half the price of a 4 wheel drive full EV SUV. Similar price to ‘non PHEV’ CRV.
@James-il3tq5 жыл бұрын
@@Garno2000 The problem with PHEVs is when they're in electric mode they're pulling around a useless engine. When they're in hybrid mode they're pulling around a useless large battery. So overall they're not very efficient. Which is why once the battery runs out on its limited range the Hybrid fuel economy is significantly worse than the RAV4 (25MPG US vs 40mpg on Rav4). It has to pull around a larger heavier battery & and the engine.
@Garno20005 жыл бұрын
@James , from an engineering point of view, you make a good point. From a consumer and euro in your pocket point of view, not so much. I bought my Outlander PHEV for similar price to the Hybrid CRV. I’m averaging 3 litres per 100km. You won’t get anything like that in the CRV. There is also the advantage of reduced tolls and parking, along with the Mitsubishi 8 year warranty. For SUVs, I see the evolution as being Petrol/diesel ICE -> Hybrid (like CRV) - > PHEV (like Outlander) - > Full Electric (that is some years off at this price point, there is the E Niro but it’s a much smaller vehicle). On that basis I personally see the hybrid CRV and hybrid RAV4 as being last generation technology. I believe Toyota are working on a RAV4 PHEV, I would speculate CRV PHEV not far behind.

I would wait atleast 4 years before you buy that thing to see how it hold, because the earthdream engine had oil dilution on the newer civic, accord, and CRV, same goes with the 2019 Toyota Rav4.
@bluearmy76905 жыл бұрын
Perich29 this engine is non turbo 2.0. So no oil dilution at all.

2.5 L engine in the new RAV4 is proven and reliable. Same goes with the hybrid system, it's been used for 20 years in the Prius.

@user-tb7rn1il3q5 жыл бұрын
Tony Rock Less than 1000 USD, assuming a few bad cells and a rebalance. Hybrids don’t make sense in the US with plenty of cheap fuel. In Europe they are a necessity on larger cars.
