Likewise, the records are only worth what you actually get paid for them, it only a guide,and nothing is static in value.

Everyone thinks their records are worth a lot of money. Do your research before hand people. I generally agree with your pricing, but for those of us who do not have access to a variety of good record stores - 80% of my purchases are on line and prices are definitely higher than your prices. I'm in enough hot water with the wife regarding my vinyl collecting. If I lived near your store, you would have to adopt me cuz I'd be divorced 😂. Love your channel !!!

Love your channel! I worked in a record shop for about a year and the worst was telling an older women that her (late) husband’s records weren’t actually worth the eBay prices she had seen. Heartbreaking sometimes to let folks down like that, I wish it was more widely known that what you see on eBay isn’t always the worth!

Happens to me all the time. I buy 78’s and people don’t realize that just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s valuable. But every once in a while..... there is still some rare blues out there. Somewhere. I find it like once a year.

Why would Abbey Road go out of print if it were still a financial gain for the record label to produce more vinyl? Hmm, maybe just a way to artificially increase the supposed value?

Aloha Dylan Thank you for an awesome insight On vinyl collecting and the worth of those particular record albums. I my personal self have been listening to record albums since the mid sixties and on. And today when I go to flea markets or even some antique malls I've noticed some ridiculous prices on record albums and there not even 1st pressings sometimes there on Pickwick labels. I recall seeing Elvis record albums priced at 50 bucks and up yet being a pressing a 1980's pressing. Either the prices has gone up that much Or they think Elvis is worth that much, lol. And yes I know that some have Extraordinary value. but when an amateur prices things without doing research 😕 that is so sad. So again thank you for a great video. Looking forward to seeing your next video. Mahalo Ed.

Dillon, Great video. Back in the day you couldn't give that VU record away. I finally bought one at the local record shop, and the owner gave me the other two he had. Sold two sealed for 100 bucks in the 80's at a record show and swap. The other one I traded for records I wanted around 2005. Found a turquoise Zep 1 at a yard sale, bought it for cheap, found out it was a boot. Oh well.... Hung the posters, stuck the stickers. Somehow I'm glad I did! Take care.

One for you as a big Zeppelin aficionado. In 1978 I was spending my usual Saturday afternoon over at Portobello Market and a guy had a box of copies of 4 for sale. I bought one as my copy had seen too many parties. It was about four bucks US at the time cos no one wanted a Lilac vinyl version of the album. Gave it to my partner at the time when we split in 81, they probably dumped it years ago.

That's kind of funny about that lady in the thriller album but at the same time it's kind of sad. We had a lady bring us 1999 Prince's album and someone had told her it was worth $200 and that's what she wanted us to buy it for. I took her over to the one we had that we were selling for $20 and she thought we were trying to rip her off somehow.. great video my man

This is useful as a dealer. I always check ebay sold, never look at ebay currently listed. Speaking of that, the worst one I ever saw was a listing for 3 standard David Bowie albums of no special pressing whatsoever, the seller wanted £800 for them! There is also a listing for a Beanie Baby that they're asking about 26 grand for because it has a letter wrong on the label or something. It's worth at the very most £100.

Its crazy what people will pay for LP's. I worked in a record store in the late 70s, spent most of my pay on albums, spent lots of money on imports from America then too. I've sold most of my records over the years, maybe a couple of hundred left. The days of washing my vinyl to remove iron filings from record player needles, that was the advice I was told to do back then. We have a large second hand record store here in my city about 20 minutes away. I'm glad to see collectors and wannabes can find lots of advice & feel envious of some huge collections out there.

Great video, most of those albums I had back in the day a album usually cost about $3.50 to $3.99 for a single disc and $5.50 to $5.99 for double albums. So I guess over time the $15 to $30 range is about for 2021 I remember buying Hendrix - Isles Of Wight which came out in 1971 as a import which was about $10. , Just like Gentle Giant - In A Glass House was about $12.00. Import pressings were hard to find in NYC.

Good estimate re: those prices. I started buying albums in the late 60s and a single disc sold for $4.00 ($3.77 + Pa. sales tax). Looked that up recently on the U.S. Consumer Price Index web site and it comes out to today to about $25.00 + tax.

Have you ever come across a mini LP from '83 called "Star Fleet Project" from "Brian May & Friends"? It had Brian May, Eddie Van Halen, Alan Gratzer, Phil Chen, Fred Mandel, and Roger Taylor. It only had 3 songs on it, but it was pretty much a jam session that was recorded without the initial thought of putting it out on record. I have an original copy and have never seen another one out there. Mine will never be for sale, but do they have a value since there probably weren't a huge amount sold?

I have a bit of an advantage concerning my collecting. I don’t care that much about cover condition , original inner sleeves , posters , stickers & stuff. Only the quality of the vinyl itself. My possibility to hear the MUSIC in the best way. I’ve bought surtain pressings of some albums in just a plain white inner sleeve. For practically nothing. When a VG++ goes for about $25-$30 , I paid $2-$5 for a NM. Imo , I can collect as I please , and be happy about it.

I have a 12" single by the Fireman. It has a hologram label on one side and comes with a poster that's about six foot square. It's like the old 1970's posters with a hippy chick in her room. It is called Rushes. No idea of it's worth and when I'm dead it will probably end up in a skip, never to be seen again. But hey, I like my vinyl. It is like my own personal diary from the 60's up to the 90's. Then the evil CD took over for a while.

That's a nice one - similar to the untouched Beatles 'Butcher' cover with the boring band shot on the front pasted over it, over time the ones with the sticker have become rarer and rarer, because everybody wants to take off the sticker to see the Emerson photo. Last time I looked, ones with the band name sticker are worth more than the ones that have had them removed, even if the person taking off the sticker managed to do it really cleanly.

As a new collector to vinyl, it's heartbreaking hearing people selling off their collections. Sorry, I'm in this for the long haul like many. Love going to my local record stores and hunt for fun. Keep it spinning, Dylan!

Thanks, remember, people are selling off their collections so you can find their old records at your local record store. It’s the circle of life!

I am a dealer too and agree with Dillon's comment, what is really heartbreaking is not people selling records, but people throwing them in the trash. I hear about it all the time. I had a woman bring me some old big band records and when I said they were not really worth much and asked her if she had any others, she said she had some David Bowie albums but she'd thrown them away because she thought they were worthless.

I can only imagine how boring record collecting would be if you had endless money. If you can find it, you could buy it. That’d certainly take some if not most of the thrill out of the equation, unless it was just a super rare small run of a pressing of a record. Btw, you couldn’t be more right about the prices of records. One can ask whatever they want, but that certainly doesn’t mean you’ll get it. After being a collector for long enough, you also just get an idea of the value of a record by knowing what to look for. Great vid, Dillon! ✌️🎶🌝

I store my records exactly the same, btw. A MoFi or at least poly-lined inner sleeve behind the cover in a decent outer sleeve. I’ve been criticized for doing that way, being told the record can just fall out. That’s never happened to me...

Holy smokes that a lot of views! I am going to try to sell my Elvis collection for no less than 1 million 😂😂. Not sure if it is just my area but "sellers" want to sell their chicken s*** for chicken salad prices. Would love to grab an original Velvet Underground someday, but that day is not today.

My copy of 'Thriller' has a max sold value on Discogs of $2,222. I probably bought mine for $8. Looks like someone paid that much for a sealed copy. That's just wrong. Great video Dillon! Thank you!

Bringing up Kind Of Blue. Isn't there a some sort of error version that is an early pressing?
@mikeroeder
@mikeroeder 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. On the stereo pressings of Kind of Blue, the 2nd side is mastered at the wrong speed. This error continued up until the remastering that happened for the 2008 50th Anniversary reissue.

What the others have mentioned here are correct, but there's one more: on the earliest pressings, the two pieces on side two ("All Blues" and "Flamenco Sketches") are listed in the wrong order on the label. "Flamenco Sketches" is listed first, "All Blues" second.

I just bought a MOV copy of Jay Z's Reasonable Doubt...for $400. Most I've spent on a record so far and the first time I really felt like I paid the peak vinyl hype premium price. It's one of my favorite albums and always the first thing I look for in a store, but I've never seen any versions. Glad I finally have a copy in my collection, but wondering if I should have paid a bit more for an original pressing instead of the MOV RP.

Selling my personal classic/psych/blues rock collection. Health reasons. 800 LPs, AC/DC-ZZ TOP Asking 60% of the median, or $4400. My collection has LPs that I bought new as well as some second hand. Nearly all Vinyl is in NM condition. 100% plastic outer sleeves, most LPs are in mofi-like sleeves. Many promos n special pressings. I can provide a Discogs link, runout numbers and pressings are accurate.

I'm sure you'd agree that just because a record is rare that doesn't necessarily make it 'good'. I have several Velvet Underground records and I only bought them because they were rare. I think the actual music is awful...poorly recorded, and the band were only average musicians to my ears. What made them different was the subject matter of their songs ("Heroin", "Sister Ray"). Have you done any videos about bootlegs yet?
