What I love about this channel is the honesty and concreteness of your reviews. So many channels on KZbin that deal with Metroidvanias do little more than repeat boilerplate, in language that is closer to that of marketing than to that of a person with opinions: "This game has enemies and moves. You will fight bosses and get new skills as you advance! Entertainment for all the family!" It's the kind of uninformative stuff you can say of virtually every game in the genre. Hence this is where I come for genuine reviews!

I love Broken Sword! One of my favorite point and click adventures because I like its atmosphere. Paris as a setting. The puzzles mostly make sense, the characters work for me, and I like the globetrotting mystery plot and how that unfolds. Kept me engaged and kept me wanting to find out more about the Templar conspiracy. I forgot you can die in the original!! You have a point though, there's a LOT of talking, which would be fine, imo, but when you're stuck basically not playing or making decisions but going through your whole inventory and all the topic choices whenever you meet a new character, it can grind things to a halt.
@Cannotbetamed16 ай бұрын
Getting to a new location in the game was always fun, but then seeing 5 different new people to talk to slowed things down so much. I really liked the part in the Hotel and the rich lady was one of my favourite characters, but I spent so much time talking to the scientist, and the thugs outside and I don't think I actually needed to talk to any of them.

I finished 2 short games over the past 2 weeks: The First Tree, and A Forest Quartet. Both mostly exploratory/ walking sim with some light puzzles. 2 to 3 hours long each. Next I'm going to try another game called The Wild Eternal a first person exploration game. Also I played the original Broken Sword in the mid 2000s and played Director's Cut last year. I enjoyed both, I liked in the remastered that you could double click to go the next screen, you couldn't in the original. But there were many hotspots where you could right click to hear George's thoughts on things in the original version, and they removed most of them in the remastered. So that version had even more (optional) dialogue to listen to ;)

I've played through Broken Sword: Director's Cut a few times over the years, and while I obviously like it (why else would I play it multiple times?), it suffers a little when compared to the original. It adds a new dimension with getting to play as Nico but at the same time feels disjointed and off with the pacing, as they had to add more lore to her story to make her less of a supporting character to George. It doesn't add much to the story and also changes the dynamic of their relationship from the original, for the worse. The story for the original game is a lot tighter. If you've played that, you can see how they've basically carved it open, removed, altered and added parts, then sewn it back up again. They've also messed around with cut-scenes and censored parts. I don't know if you noticed or not, but at times the game had the new voice actress for Nico reading her lines, then it would switch to the original actress at a lower volume, which was odd. Then they kept a lot of the old, poorer quality voices for the other characters. I still think it's a good game but the development seemed rushed, so there's an overall lack of polish. The original was great for its time, which exposes this as being a bit of a bloated and buggy - albeit still enjoyable - remake.
@SVPortfolio6 ай бұрын
I completely agree. OG > DC. Cannot wait for the remaster/remake, whatever it's called, luckily it's based on the original not DC. BS was my first touch on PnC adventure games and holds dear in my heart. I had PS1 version and the handshake puzzle is almost impossible to do with a controller. Good times. For me Rolf Saxon / George is as reconnaisable as Dominic Armato /Gyubrush.
@outlandishusername6 ай бұрын
@@SVPortfolio I think it's called Reforged, and yes, I'll no doubt be buying it, too. I remember playing the demo of the original BS on the PS1 but never played the full game and on PC until a few years later. My first Point and Click was Maniac Mansion, which I played as a kid with a few friends on a C64 in the 90s. We had no idea what to do, used a joystick, and when you went into a particular room, the game crashed. I discovered Monkey Island 1 and 2 on the Amiga 1200 later on and have been hooked ever since.

Congratulations on your new pickup! I don't think your last BF (Will?) was ever put on camera. I wish you the best. Last month I started playing Fallout London, and I've been majorly impressed. I've played 17 hours so far, and it seems like this is to Fallout 4 what New Vegas is to Fallout 3 -- a huge, ambitious, non-Bethesda Fallout game with some enjoyable "fresh takes" not found in Bethesda games. It's only on PC and crashes are quite common, unfortunately; but that is probably inherited from the original game, so I won't lay it on Team FOLON.

I have finished Sundered in 2019 100%.Got all 3 endings and all perks max. FYI a BIG HINT for those who want to max their perks farming is to go to the swarm map far left bottom where you get a perk ( cant remember which it is ) and u farm endlessly there... I havent touched it in 5 years and cant remember the builds but i used to have an invinsible one where you max CRIT DMG and you have literally 1 HP but ur Attacks generate a % of shield each hit and you just max Shield perk... Any ways the game was good . Only disappointment was some exploits you could make to reach some areas before you get the appropriate skill to pass it... And also the random swarms some times were annoying and the farming system is just oof...you just kill things and get upgrades... A Metroidvania mainly features rewards through exploration... IN sundered you dont need to explore that much... But in general a pretty worthy game for its price... Even more than D4 KEKW

Great rundown. I still wanna check out Gestalt. Two I'm going through right now is Souldiers, a 16-bit style metroidvania. It's pretty fun, has a personality of its own, and offers loads of customization of your character of choice. It's a bit challenging on the normal difficulty level, but that could be either my lack of skill or the controller I use that could use a repair. The other one is Hades II, which is still in early access. So far, even in the state it's in, it has a lot of polish, and the customization is even deeper than it's predecessor. It looks to be at worst, just as good as the first one, even better at best.

Face palm on that but I like physical anyway so... meh? And then got the itch to play Dark Souls. I've started it a half a dozen times and never got to the second bell. But this time is gonna be the time. I've blasted through all the way past Anor Londo and O&S, a couple side bosses and now I'm headed into the end game. The first half is definitely a master class in world design. The second half so far... less so but still awesome. Except Bed of Chaos. That thing can eat my entire ass.

The design of the first half of Dark Souls is SO good. Then... ugh. I really didn't like the lava place, or the dark place. The level design really took a nose dive.

Yeah, I'm pretty devastated by her disdain of portable gaming, too.

"Director's cut" feels like it could use some editing ? That checks out.

Its very "Star Wars" Directors Cut: Every good comes with some bad

Sundered is a great metroidvania, but I have yet to finish it. I got into it for a while, but after I beat the first boss, I kinda lost interest. Not because the game is bad, I just have trouble focusing on games for long periods of time lately. Many it's because I have too damn many! 😂

"Too much dialog" has been something annoying me with quite a few games in the last couple years. While I do think it's part of a trend, it might also be that I have less patience now for meandering dialog. As a kid I put up with a lot of time-wasting stuff... but many of those games didn't actually take up as much time as open-world, dialog-filled games do now. And usually it's all voice acted, but... Final Fantasy 16. It was the game that made me focus on it most but absolutely not the first one or last one that has bothered me. I really wanted to give the story a chance, but around 20 or so hours in (and of course I'm not a speed-runner, so we're talking a casual 20 hours which isn't very far in, honestly) I had already gotten fed up with characters talking on and on without actually saying anything relevant or _interesting_ even if the dialog itself was well voice acted and technically well written if pointless. And some of these were for very inane side quests. Ubisoft is a major offender in this regard. But you'll also see it in games you wouldn't expect, like some Metroidvanias, some Roguelites, some shooty games, and so on. The big name companies tend to do it the most, but not exclusively. Hire an editor, game companies, to sort through the massive amounts of dialog and cut out all the bits that are extraneous. Tighten that up. Maybe slim down long cut scenes that don't really progress the story much. Because I'd _rather_ be spending more of my time making meaningful choices -- ideally informed by the story and dialog -- and more time _playing_ the game than just advancing text or sitting still to listen to a massive monologue or pointless dramatic scene, repeatedly. I feel bad skipping through dialog or even skipping past cut scenes. But there's a limit, and my time matters to me. It isn't refundable, I don't get it back.

I feel very much the same. I think most games need an editor. They're so eager to give the players more content, but is it good and worthwhile content?

Sadly, totally agreed on Xeodrifter. Got it for like 1€, and I was, still, very disappointed. It was mostly the very limited movement that bored me to death. gave up after 1 hour. As for what I'm playing: I'm loving Dungeons of Hinterberg right now. The Zelda-like and Social elements are very well balanced, and it's fun and cute, even if none of the elements are truly original.

I've installed Dungeons of Hinterberg, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
