Prophets do seem to nail, that synth that just fits in the mix every time. Great character too. Love granular synthesis for pads too. Totally understand mentality of it if it just works, use it - for the waves compressor. Can be easy to always reach for something better, while mastering what you have gets more music made. My faves: Synth: Hydrasynth deluxe - does everything with lots of hands on control, also feels like a cs80, w/ the ribbon, polyphonic afterouch and splits. 16 voices is really nice too. Great logical interface too. It’s modulation is super easy and powerful. Easy to get lost in. VSTi: Probably Serum. I use Komplete way more but that’s more like an ecosystem than one instrument. Stuff like Sylenth and Pigments have more character but Serums versatility can’t be beat. You can get that analog warmth with a bit of noise, saturation and pitch instability. Then it can do everything digital under the sun. The interface is just so good as well. Plugin: Komplete is my go to plugin. When you have the keyboard that interfaces with it, it’s such a fast way to find presets, use them straight or alter them or even a sound world and then you can make a patch in that. If you meant effects it would have to be the Valhalla verbs. Think they’re on almost every track I do. Haven’t got any outboard gear or a drum machine yet. One day. ;)

Drum Machine: Yamaha RX5 has probably been my favorite one ive owned. Its digital but it has so much character! VSTI: Vital is my go to. Its free, it sounds incredible, and you can really turn it into whatever you want it to be if youre creative enough. Plug in: The Soundtoys suite. I use them on everything. Especially Echo Boy, Decapitator, and Little Alter Boy Polysynth: Novation Summit. It checks all the boxes for what i want from a poly synth. shimmery PPG/Waldorf style pads with the wavetables going through analog filters, dreamy soundscapes with the beautiful fx and deep modulation, and still being able to pull off thick brassy pads and basses. Pedal (well, rack effect): ZOOM Studio 1204. when a sound just needs a little extra something, this thing will bring it to life! Outboard: My eurorack case, ive been building a small but mighty system in an Intellijel 7U case that is great for processing external audio as well just being a creative sand box for all sort of sound design

Love the video, and love the challenge! Effect: The Sunn LifePedal. It does an incredible amount of sonic work for me in an enclosure that inspires me to not just make music, but to remember the sounds that drove me to create art in the first place. Drum Machine: Behringer RD-8. The simplicity of the 808 is so deceptive; I feel like this instrument has more depth than one assumes, and its limitations remind me that you don't need a lot of sounds if every single one of them is good. Poly Synth: Korg Minilogue XD. I cannot believe the power and depth of this four voice synth in such an excellent form factor and price. Chaining two of them for an 8-voice analog synth or bitimbral sound station is still cheaper than most other big poly workflows, and I'm still learning. Mono Synth: Toraiz AS-1. I still think this is the most underrated bassline generator on the market. Single voice Prophet with fantastic effects in a small, performance-friendly box. Software: Pianoteq. I was a pretty strong believer in a dawless worklow for physical tone shaping, but Pianoteq's modeling quality, to my ears, completely blew away the hardware options. My laptop is essentially just a box for holding Pianoteq, and I'm not mad at it one bit.

Favorite “plugin:” softube console one, I use it on every track and the controller makes for a very fast workflow, I love anything that gives me a way to shape sound with out touching a mouse. I use it for controlling the UAD console software as well as the Softube console 1 plugins in the daw, which is so convenient when I’m recording guitars/basses so I can fiddle with knobs to change parameters instead of messing with a mouse Favorite synth: nord drum, it’s a great tool for getting real drum fills with synthetic sounds, or using it to trigger VST or sampled drums in the daw. It’s so easy to sound design on it, but even a lot of the presets are very striking, unique sounding, and inspiring Favorite drum machine: Arturia drum brute impact. I just love the sounds, it’s really fun to perform with and for me it just clicks and I can play it without thinking. Also the sequencer alone is so good I sometimes use it as sort of a beatstep pro Favorite sampler: all of the Roland SP’s but in particular the SP303. Its so simple but also very capable, has a very distinct crunchy lofi sound to it, but the sound isn’t harsh either but instead full of character. Also just has a stunningly beautiful design that is very inspiring to me Favorite pedal: line6 dl4, it’s such a powerful looper it’s almost like an instrument all it’s own. Very performable and intuitive, I have never found a looper that works quite as well for me A close second for favorite pedal for me would be the Plus Pedal by game changer. It’s not as universally useful as the DL4 but it completely changes the way I play guitar almost turning the guitar into a different instrument entirely

First of all, love your videos! They’re not only about music but about so much more i.e. your personal experience with gear, life experiences and aspects that are very deep and are related to the music that you create. In regards to the prophet, have you every played the P08 and if so, what is your opinion between the P08 and the P06? Do you still find a major difference between the two (other than the obvious number of voices of course) and would you still prefer the P06 over the P08? Thank you :)
@NoirEtBlancVie
@NoirEtBlancVie 2 жыл бұрын
So, I would say the REV2 is the closest thing to the P08 I've played. While the Mopho and Tetra are past machines I've had, it doesn't feel the same as playing the voicings like on an 08. I'd say, the Tempest still sounds good to me as a polysynth, it's the closest to a P08 as it gets, that said, P6 is an entirely different beast, it's just that good.

Would love to know if you ever used Softube's Dyna-mite and how much you think it loses over hardware. I'm all-in on software (and have the Mike-E also, which I love for toasting 808s) but am a bit curious about a racked version...
@NoirEtBlancVie
@NoirEtBlancVie Жыл бұрын
I 100% use the Softube Dynamite plug-in. I’d say it’s 85% of the hardware, the hardware is so strangely unique, there is nothing that can keep the bottom end weight, mid snap and retain the top end the way a Dynamite does. I actually am replacing my hardware dynamite with a Valley 610 (as soon as the eBay dude ships it 😤) I actually love the Mike-E from Softube too. They’re my favorite plug-in company alongside SSL.

@@AceGarpTruckingCo don’t go that far. I’m also a super compressor snob, I l’ve had this Dynamite since 2011, it was my first compressor, so it’s like picking out someone familiars voice in a crowd, my ears are just tuned to the real thing. That said, the plug-in could sound more like the real thing since mine is worse for wear and only one channel works now 😮‍💨 the plug-in for the price is all you’d ever need. I just have an obsession with the hardware. If I were going to get a hardware I’d probably go with a Dynamite 2 or 3 though. Not as old, same VCA chip.

Everyone has their go tos' and I've always liked the prophet 6, never have owned one, my interests dispersed elsewhere. It's good to have some diversity in understanding music making, and some VSI or DAWs or creative plugins are good to comprehend for oneself. I like to point out though as you have towards the end is that hardware dynamics and mastering may be better routes for me as well. The latency usually in software doesn't allow me to hear well the changes, but I'm also not using top sound modeling plugins. I wanted the Tempest some time back, but my interest into drum machines have faded for utilizing some of my own or preset drum synth keys instead with sequencer or even arpeggios. I haven't used a pedal for a synth yet, to me it almost seems uncessary to what synths can do with modulation and key set ups through velocity sensitivity, modulation wheel or after touch to ADSR, but also good to have an effects rack or most newer synths have plenty effects already within the synth. The studio usually changes for me, plenty gear to use and plenty gear to resell. I like to utilize certain synths for certain music ideas, and that's that. It's as if the synth itself has a character to describe itself to something I'm feeling in how to choose compositions. Ha, you know you wanted the Roland Gaia, don't pretend. I had an interest for its capabilities, but decided against it, only I still would like to try it.

Great video! A very inspirational watch! In my "studio" it's the Roland TD that I have extended with a TD 6 as midi-controller. It's me e-drumkit. I don't use the sound of the modules, that usually comes from Toontrack's Superior Drummer 3. I have a vast amount of SDX's and EZX's and is for me as a drummer a delight! Hardware synth, I have a couple and my favourite differs from time to time. Today it's a close call between the Moog Minitaur and the Roland System 8. I think the latter wins! Today... Software, although I really do love the VSTi's like Padshop and Retrologue too (as a Cubase user), I do think I prefer Arturia's Pigments for a vast amount of reasons, but its modulation capacities would be the one I want to point out! Such a cool VSTi! Effects, I swing to ways. Most effects come from VST's and I probably use Arturia's REV Intensity the most. Hardware it would be the only effect I own, DrNo's MoonCanyon. It's the coolest reverb, delay and distortion unit I've ever heard! Looks awesome too! Check it out!

@@NoirEtBlancVie Arturia will definitely put it on sale again. If you create an account and download their Software Center, you can already testdrive it, for a month or so. The System 8 is a great synth that sounds very good in my opinion. The Jupiter 8, Juno 106 and JX-3P I have on there sound amazing. The System 8's own sound engine is absolutely perfect! So many oscillators and filters. Just awesome. Downsides, you can only save 64 presets per plug-out and it comes stock with great sounds, so you need to overwrite them. And the reverb section sounds too digital for my taste. Other than that, great synth. All the best, Bas
