Even the hardware isn't that great on the N8, it runs an ancient ARM11 680 CPU and only 256MB of RAM, GPU is said to be good though. Design is nice but as Jon said Symbian while being pretty powerful at the core has a TERRIBLE UI, and implementation of features.

Yeah, lets all run and get an iphone4 what switches of, drops the signal, no flash support, awful battery life, way over priced, not a camera anyway near the N8 and i could go on and on...and as for Android phones...What can i say? Dude, you went bit over the TOP about email, personaly, your every "normal person" would use a pc/laptop for email, obviously you have lots of time to sit reading emails. DO NOT LET THIS GUY PUT YOU OFF, go read/watch other reviews. Love the N85 and the N8!!!

@thatapplegeek Android is better than iOS as it does everything that iOS at least as good then it has stuff that iOS doesn't have! I'm sure you know what i m talking about! Now mind telling us what android device you own and which you are probably comparing to the iphone 4 and lets talk about it, because the android hand set that came out 7 months before the iphone like the evo 4G does not any of the issues you are talking about!

This guy is not that bad then I expected. Nice review John, but I still want one. xD I don't want to pay so so much for the iPhone, so the nokia is cheaper. I DON'T WANT ANDROID. I'm afraid, one day, androids will attack me. HTC got many many phones, but all is the same, and bad. Why can't they do 1 really good. C'mon. Sony Ericcson has slowed down. I like my nokia 5800 now, but how should I upgrade? One year and I bet there will be a new iPhone

@thatapplegeek + as you expect the apps that the iphone can not run (flash based for exemple), not to mention you cannot do as much even with a jailbroken iOS, but some just prefere simple things and iOS as it is is a very mature OS than you can run out of the box without needing anything and alot like that.... But anyway Symbian aight gonna die anytime soon but it will not be anymore on the high end nokia phones the N8 is the last on the series MeeGoo is the future for nokia.

@thatapplegeek Symbian is one of the best OS saying is the worst OS ever is not knowing what you are talking about!! the fact it did everything that other OS coudn't do in beginning and mid of the years 2000s! the probleme is it was a victim to it own success+no competitionat some point make the developpement slow very slow! and now Symbian is like a dinosaure compared to the iOS Android or WP7. Android is definitly better than iOS, mostly because most apps on iOS has their counter part on iOS

You said that the review is crap, but the only thing to show that it is actually crap was.. saying that email is good, when we can clearly see it is not.

A quick review of browsing music content would also be nice! ... I tend to use my music player on my phone more than anything else, and i'm considering getting this phone. I'm not paying for a £40 contract for an iPhone AND paying for the handset as well, £20 contract and the N8 for free ... WIN!

Screw all that, i love my N900 and beats any phone right now...the great software of Maemo with a possible upgrade to Meemo is what has kept my phone alive after one year already...I think Nokia should go straight to Meemo and forget Symbian all together.

To be fair to the N8 there have been several updates that have improved speed and responsiveness since 2010. People who want a decent camera on a mobile phone that has excellent build quality should give it a chance

Lol, Jon Q is the best. His enthusiasm keeps me focused on the video. As for the phone, I'll stick with my iPhone, my next phone will either be Android based or the next generation iPhone that's available at the time.

@compl3t3 well, actually it wouldnt need a faster processor. the N8 has a 680 mhz Arm11 processor which basically destroys any of the android phones arm8 processor.. i am an android lover btw haha. just saying.

nokia pros = hardware cons = software THEY ARE RUBBISH AT SOFTWARE! and if you want a camera go SLR yeah they are expensive (not really just buy a cheap cam and use the money on lenses)

Totally agree with everything you said, nokia symbian OS is outdated. The phone itself is very good and capable of doing a lot more. Sad to see this phone not living up to its full potential.

Useful video. I'm struggling finding a Nokia phone that'll completely satisfy me from here on out so hearing the criticisms here was beneficial to my research. I'm still on the lookout for something good. Will look into the C7 mentioned towards the end. I'm open to suggestions for an older model that is encompassing in quality features. (mainly music, video, & if possible bluetooth support)

I would say - it is not an iPhone though you used it like an iPhone and you expect it to be like an iPhone. It does not support flick gesture yet you are flicking it. Funny. A regular Nokia user would not complain about such things. Ugh i missed the old days.

Ok so the selling point is the camera....but the camera tech is years old. my current T-01D Regza Docomo Phone (which was released last year) has a 13.1 camera that takes photos / video in Full 1080P, has a dual core processor, completely waterproof (so I can take video underwater), has dolby digital mobile sound, a finger print biometric security sensor, TV tuner, FM transmitter, and Gorilla Glass.

@07liberian I already bought a torx size 5 screwdriver before it happen btw, hahha but i doubt that after removing the battery and placing it back will prevent the problem from happening again, "apparently nokia said it is the way they've place the engine components" my phone shut down for the second time, still waiting for an absolute answer if it happens for the third time then i am gonna ask for a replacement =D

let me tell you why you should go out and buy this phone: 1. This phone marks the death of symbian in the "smart phone" market. Which means in a few years when people are looking to buy antic phones on ebay, this is gonna be worth something. 2. If you don't support nokia now you won't know what kinda of funny products they gonna push out next. The mobile market just won't have a kid to bash on anymore. 3. If you break the phone, you won't feel bad at all.

@07liberian I just think that because its been noted by many reviews of symbian, that this is a frustrating os because sometimes it just does not respond as quickly as one would like, this seems to be an issue. I do agree that simple is better. The more eyecandy you put on a device the more you just want it to do what you asked it to do. Having said that Nokia makes a great looking and spec wise device, it really doesn't mean anything if you dont have an os that functions quickly to complimentit

Am I one of the few people that LOVE the n8? I'm coming from a htc android phone and I have absolutely no buyers remorse getting the n8. I absolutely love the n8 and it works like a charm. I can get 2 days worth of usage out of the n8, with maybe 1 or 2 bars left, whereas my android phone will need charging before dinner time. Ok maybe there's a few apps I wish the I can get on the n8 but that's not a big deal, it's just games lol I think I can honestly say the n8 is my perfect phone =]

Intentionally typing wrong you say? This phone is not his own phone and he might not have gotten used to it yet. Maybe this video hints that it might be hard for new users to get used to typing. Plus, from this video I can clearly see that the user experience should be very unsatisfying even when he's not typing. He could've gotten an impaired device but the looks and everything of symbian just doesn't do it for our current market. If you like the rugged look and laggy scrolling, go right ahead

The current phone that Jon uses is the iPhone and he doesn't get to review hundreds of phones like others in TechnoBuffalo or Phonedog. The only thing he can refer to is the iPhone and he is doing exactly that (he did have a blackberry but for current trends, his old blackberry just wouldn't cut it). Just because he's comparing the device to an iPhone doesn't mean that he is an Apple fanboy. Where is your logic people? Please think before you write anything.

@misirlou234 Ahhh but that's where you're wrong...680mhz ARM11 uses ARMv6 Architecture but the new android phones with Cortex A8 based processors use the new ARMv7 architecture and have higher clock speeds. Also, the next gen android phones will have Cortex A9 based processors which are dual core :P As for graphics the N8 uses Broadcom BCM2727 and say in the Desire HD they have AMD based Adreno 205. They Both support Open GL 2.0 however the adreno can do 1080P HD rather than just 720P.

@ddnn3 May be, but think of all the things that N8 has and the iPhone 4 is missing. True Story-My friend owning an iPhone 4 played around with my N8 for about 20-25 min and he actually wanted to trade his phone with mine! He said he really loved it. KZbin experience TBH is not as bad as Jon says. Its decent. But think of all the normal things that iPhone can't do. File transfer over BT, Too much reliance on iTunes, etc. I don't want my phone to be completely dependent on a computer software.

@Panhead1993 Ya, whatever floats your boat, but I'd rather pay a bit more for a different device. Like the first gen iPhone was $400, and I unlocked it and used it on Rogers, with no contract. Or an iPhone 4 on Rogers with a contract, sure its more than an N8, but if you think about it like you also get an iPod touch built in for that price, it's not so bad. I watch a lot of KZbin on my phone, so this N8 wouldnt work very well for me.

@ddnn3 The unlocked price might seem to be high, but its no where near some of the high-end android phones and need I talk about the iPhone unlocked price? 12MP doesn't mean it's high end. It sure is Nokia's most high-end product till date (Besides N900) but not a high-end in the market. N9 will be true high-end. I don't get that scrolling thing. I don't scroll that fast ever on my iPod Touch. I think its because when you scroll really fast, you can't see if you missed the mail you wanted to see

@Panhead1993 I totally agree with this. The N8 is still in it's early stages and the software is being constantly refined. I would also like to add that the touch screen is better than Jon was making it out to be. He wasn't allways hitting the keys he was trying to utilize and in some cases pressing the keys too long as the phone reacts in certain menus to how long you press something for. Also people contemplating buying the N8 shouldn't forget about free OVI maps services.

@Panhead1993 I didn't think the N8 was a mid range phone. Isn't the price still quite high? And with features like a 12mp camera, it seems geared towards high end markets. I guess older symbian users want to stick with it, but it's def not for me. The way mail messages scrolled in such a choppy way is a big turn off for me. The iPhone could do that properly many years ago. Seems like Nokia isn't really delivering great OS's.

@chunky1x Symbian^3, tbh, is not crap. Jon just points out things that he doesn't like. S60 is what was Crap. S^3 has improved ALOT from that and now the whole experience seems very smooth. And about the email thing, wait for the E7 as thats a true business smartphone. Yes, the hardware is good enough to beat SE X10. The GPU on it is one of the most powerful on any phone and aids the CPU in doing the work. Plus, the whole Symbian OS will get its UI revamped. All S^3 devices will get that update.

@ddnn3 It actually isn't. When was the last time you saw Android perform well on a mid-range phone with less/no lags? Android does NOT work well on lower specs. If you look at Nokia, MANY people are using low/mid end Nokia phones that run on symbian. They cant just drop it like that. Symbian is a BIG part of them. Of course, there's MeeGo for the High-end. So Nokia's strategy is great. Symbian for low/mid end and MeeGo for high end

But I still think it'll release after September 2011. I could be wrong. I'll sell my N8 then and buy N9

The camera on the other hand I don't know because more mega pixels does not always translate to better picture quality so he probably should of went more in depth on that I guess. But if you care that much about the camera than you are probably more interest in taking pictures than having a functional smart phone so why not go buy a Nikon instead of a Nokia.

The review is incomplete, you say nothing about the video and audio capabilities of the phone, the fact for example that you don't need "an app" to play any kind of video file (avi, mkv, divx) right out of the box.Also you didn't mention the fact that the phone can read and write content from a usb stick or hard drive.The existence of an hdmi output.The continuous growth of the ovi store, and the existence of games and apps like, angry birds, avatar hd, asphault 5 hd, the sims 3, spb mobile.

@TheVishnupankaj Yes. The E7 is a Symbian^3 phone. However, The N9 will be Nokia's first MeeGo phone. The leaked pictures suggest it will have a 4.0" screen and a hardware QWERTY keyboard (like the E7). But the internals (CPU, GPU, RAM, etc.) will be a LOT more powerful than any Symbian device. It won't be a smartphone. It will be a mobile computer. E7 looks great but N9 looks even better. Plus, MeeGo will be a MUCH better OS than Symbian. It will compete (and defeat) iOS/Android/WP7! ;)

@skrbicdu I knew what you meant, I HATE like/dislike jokes on youtube. Do you REALLY need 1GHz and 512 RAM even if N8 can perform just that fast on lower specs? Symbian doesn't need too much power. It still can multitask 25-30 apps with that RAM and processor without any problems or slowing down the phone. Symbian will get UI updates and other Symbian^4 updates. N8 will only get better. Symbian SDK is old. New symbian^3 devices support Qt. ANY developer would agree that Qt is VERY easy to use

Think you're being harsh - my Desire has the same behaviour when pressing 2 keys simultaneously. It has the best camera on a phone full stop. USB otg is unique. HDMI out is cool, and there's free sat nav. I would think most of the problems will be ironed out with updates as they're software related. The N8 I tried was working nicely - I'd rather have one of these than an Iphone 4, but wouldn't swap my Desire for it tho'...

As bias as he sounds, he's pretty much right on all accounts. The reason for Nokia's past success was how often and well they were able to innovate and well, they just havnt done that in the past 5-8 years. Arguably one of the best hardware manufacturers in the world, I really think they should stick to specializing in hardware. From early builds, Meego still doesnt seem to have "it".

@nirvana922 Not very soon. Remember, ALL Symbian^3 phones will get Symbian^4 update. Including the UI update. Also, MeeGo looks EXTREMELY promising and has TONS of potential. New CEO (Stephen Elop) is bringing lots of change to the company and the future looks very bright now for Nokia. Nokia still holds most of the smartphone market share in the world. 2011 will be a new start for Nokia with Symbian UI updates and MeeGo launch.

Jon u left out a lot of features man. The video should be called Quick look and Symbian bashing :D i saw a friend using the N8 and its not that bad. granted Nokia isnt doing so well in the North American market but its still a BIG player in the world, as a matter a fact number one in spart phone sales. For me i think people who have symbian phones and are used to the interface is a No brainer to upgrade. I use and iphone but also have N97mini. i look at symbian as more of a geek device!

Its the quality and trust you get from the phone. for example, my friend, who owns an iPhone 4, checked out my N8 and after about 20-25 min of using it, he said he was VERY impressed by it and that he would trade his iPhone for my N8. And since Stephen Elop has become the CEO, LOTS of changes are happening. now every S^3 device will get the update that S^4 was going to get. The UI will be modern standard. N8 is truly full of potential

Auto correct IS present in landscape QWERTY keyboard! Ovi store is actually MUCH better than before, very smooth. I think its easy to figure out if somethin is a folder or not based on its name. I use email on N8 everyday and now I like it. No mention of HDMI-OUT, USB-On-The-Go, FM Tansmitter, web browser update will be available shortly. New browser will be based on Qt and comparable to iOS and android. UI update will also be available. In short, this phone is only gonna get better over time!

This isn't a review, this is some theater. You can see he's been using just iPhone, for example using the camera he tries to tap to focus, not like in a real camera (half press camera button) and he don't know the square should be red so it's been focused correctly. And why isn't he pressing the buttons, but right next to them so of course they won't react. Biased "review".

Symbian is old and ugly. Themes are a poor excuse for the horrible taste/lack of skill that resides within Symbian UI designers. I have no idea why anyone would use it when you have thousands more quality apps on the App Store and Android Market. Nokia doesn't even want Symbian anymore, they're switching to Meego.

@MrOsamaful or and android OS, i've used symbian till the iphone 3GS came out (switched from N95-8GB to the 3GS) and then the Bold 9700, and quite frankly, either one of those OS are better than symbian. i had set up email on the symbian and hated it, i always did just end up using the laggy and oh so annoying web browser.

@tremmelmark Agreed. I had a 5800 too and now I bought the N8. And yes, Symbian can be frustrating sometimes but trust me, S^3 is ALOT better. Its not really "terrible" like Jon says. I like it. Besides, Nokia is committed to provide SW Updates for these new S^3 phones. This will also include UI updates! So N8 is a good buy and will get better and better as time passes.

@SmexyWells They HAVE a new OS. Its called MeeGo. It will be specifically for High-end phones. It will compete against iOS/Android/WP7 and possibly even defeat them. Symbian is only meant for low/mid-end phones. It's not really fair to compare it to iOS/Android or WP7 which are high-end OS's. Wait for a MeeGo phone (Nokia N9) and then compare it to others.

A lot of those faulty touches on the screen were obviously caused because he wasn't pressing firm enough. I wish they'd get rid of this guy, honestly... I can't take his reviews seriously...

i see a lot of ppl struggling with the touch screen. i mean when they "push a button" on screen doesn't seem to immediately respond. i can't belive the struggles with this phone, even though they delayed it for so long to "fix"up the issues it has. the only thing i think they focused on was the camera. Nokia needs to improve their gameplay.

@kockgunner I wouldn't - it says so, right where it says "I wouldn't swap my Desire for it..", but iOS lacks customisation/personalisation options, so not interesting for me. Only problem with Android is the cameras and internal memory, also battery usage. This N8 lasts waaay longer than HTC or Iphones, so kudos for that at least....

This thing sums up why the iPhone really changed the game. This is how almost every phone was before the iPhone came along, really annoying to use, LOADS of features but really poorly implemented and just generally a bad frustrating experience. No wonder Nokia is losing market share with this sort of crap.

I see no reason AT ALL to defend Symbian. I have an Nokia N95 and the Sybian OS is utter crap, it's not so much the lack of intuitiveness that gets me but the fact that it lags, freezes up from time to time and isn't very user friendly when transfering files, not to mention it is very bulky.

well i disagree if your pone can be a strimmer and you can connect your hard drive inside ... also those exits are easy to find because they are appear on the device and very handy and used to be Nokia's major "advantage" on Iphone 4 .. anyway i enjoy your presentation u r a great performer thanks:)

@mnguyea In your dreams buddy, Symbian is no where near death. Updates are following. Stephen Elop has brought many changes to Nokia. Plus, Nokia has MeeGo for the high-end phones. Wait till you see and use one of them, then you can comment if you want.........

@skrbicdu multiply that number by 100000. That many people bought N8. I'm a VERY satisfied user. This guy shouldn't do Nokia phone reviews. He's way too biased. Steve Litchfield does the best reviews for ANY phone. Because of his review, I bought the N8 and I'm glad I did.

wow i was a SYMBIAN fanboy until i bought nokia n97 for 600 $ after a year of usage i bought an iphone 3gs(spend my money on a fixie :P so i couldnt afford an iphone 4) and yes iphone is way way better and except battery life that sometimes it's really annoying :S

Why don't you review something NEW instead of the iphone 5.. Why did you skip reviewing THE Pureview 808 even if it's the most revolutionary phone of the year I'd say.. And btw the modern symbian belle fp2 kicks that lame IOS6's ASS!
