During our van life road trip we decided to go scuba diving at the SS Yongala, known to be the best shipwreck dive in Australia, and one of the best wreck dives in the world.
The SS Yongala is off the coast of Townsville, and the old steam ship sunk in 1911 during a cyclone. It wasn't rediscovered until 1958, at which point the ocean and Great Barrier Reef had begun to take it over. Today it is one of the best places to go scuba diving in Australia.
This old shipwreck sits in about 28m of water and is suitable for advanced divers only. It's most famous for the abundance of marine life you can see down there, including huge amounts of sharks, rays, sea snakes, pelagic fish, nudibranchs, reef fish and coral. It really is like diving in an aquarium!
Diving the SS Yongala is one of those must-do bucket list activities if you're into scuba diving and travelling around Australia.
