Eh, depends on how local the stuff is to be honest. I can find vegan products the same price as their non-vegan counterparts if they're locally made (provided they aren't from a tiny business just starting up.) Plus for that fancy cake, you'd pay a fair bit for a slice of that anyway. A lot of vegan desserts especially are just made with a lot more love and care, which you get charged more for regardless of whether it's vegan or not.

I am allergic to nuts and I'm still very fine too haha :D Usually it's the raw vegan desserts that rely highly on nuts, baked vegan goods are usually okay to eat ;)
@LunnarisLP8 жыл бұрын
We already get enough protein. The whole stupid protein shit is a stupid lie, if you are not growing or you try to gain muscle, all that will happen with a protein deficite is that your hairs and nails might grow a tiny bit slower. I never even thought about protein when I became vegan and I still got better at sport after 1-2 weeks already. Now I wanted to gain some muscles so I added a bean and pea recipes to my mix. Most people can still eat some seeds. or some nuts. e.g. you might be allergic to peanuts, but you can eat wallnuts or you can eat linseeds and chia but not soy beans and stuff. People need to stop pretending they are all male 100kg body builders who need a shitload of protein :D I think this misconception was spread by people trying to sell their protein shakes. And if you are on a healthy and balanced diet, your body can actually make better use of the protein you eat, because your digestion system is working more efficient without some dead animals rotting inside it, which kinda makes it so you can don't need that much.

Every single Ben and Jerry's Almond Milk non-dairy flavor is amazing. Trader Joe's has cherry chocolate soy ice cream which tastes perfect and the strawberry coconut is really tasty. The chocolate one is blah. Also, if you find Coconut Bliss it has a really good vanilla as long as you're okay with coconut undertones too. SoDelicious has a good cashew milk line. You can also make really creamy desserts at home using raw cashews blended into a sweetened puree. Google cashew cream for a recipe.

Plaxy well, i have heared, that there is a debate about vitamin B12, but that´s another story. Like i already mentioned, i eat for the pleasure and not because some kind of ideology or lifestyle tells me to. Which doesn´t mean that i accept factory farming. I grew up in a rural environment and know the difference between the farmer who knows every cow by her name and the big business, where animals get chopped on the conveyor belt. I see myself as a conservative, but i also think, that "think global, act local" seems a plausible idea. There is not black and white, more people have to see the many shades of grey and i don´t mean that book where people do... things.

Like just stop trying to make it taste like milk or meat and just make something that tastes good. There are actually loads of delicious vegan foods and this is coming from someone who isn't vegetarian or vegan.
@naboclare8 жыл бұрын
there are a lot of vegan food that "replicates" non-vegan foods that are really tasty. i really like some cheeses made of cashews, burguers made from a lot of stuff lol (like quinoa, chickpeas and beans) and peanut milk goes incredibly well with coffee.
@holyflygon8 жыл бұрын
then dont call it a burger because a burger is short for hamburger which is ground beef cooked. Just call it something else and people might have a better time dealing with the new taste.
@naboclare8 жыл бұрын
no, it's short for quinoaburger, chickpeaburger and beanburger. jk. i'll call it whatever i want, though.
@dallymoo78168 жыл бұрын
Those foods are there too help people new to vegan-ism transition to vegan food. And also so that vegans can enjoy a burger etc without the guilt of eating a corpse or their juices. Okay so stop worrying and chill man.
@mismismism8 жыл бұрын
***** I agree there are some good ones but the vast majority of bad ones are the reason vegetarian/vegan foods have a bad rep. A lot of them fall into the trap of putting flavor and appealing texture on the back burner to try and replicate the texture of meat and dairy when it never really is the same, I have no prob with a vegan burger if it's just made to taste good and be what it is instead of trying to be beef and failing.
@Lilredpoppy8 жыл бұрын
Still not sure why it surprises people when vegan food tastes good. Do they really think we enjoy eating nasty things all day? Sure there's vegan foods that taste like crap, but there's plenty of omnivore food that tastes just as bad.

Dasrakel I like the fake stuff. Tastes good to me. I hate the taste of most meat, so...The only meat I like is chicken and I only eat the breast. But, I prefer Quorn. I know it's mold, but it's tasty mold. Meat has its downsides too. So, I think we just respect one another and let people eat what they want to eat.

Also irish, I really love being vegan but it kinda annoyed how one of the guys said "it tastes like normal food" but what's not normal about any of it. Just because it has no dairy or meat in it doesn't mean that it's not normal food. Even Ben & Jerrys (in Ireland at least) sell vegan ice cream. Pretty sure it's flavoured peanut butter cookie.

Yeah, I'd say they're pretty average in price :). there are less expensive options to some of them too like the ice cream. But the things like the cakes can be made from scratch... like 3 ingredients isn't as bad. It's not like you're eating them every day and even if there were a little bit more in price it would still be worth it both in flavour and to prevent all the awful things done to the animals.

I'm vegetarian and allergic to legumes, which means no chick peas, no lentils, no kidney beans, and no peanuts. The last time I went into the hospital, the kitchen sent someone up to talk to me because they couldn't figure out anything they could make for me. _"What the hell do you eat when you're not in the hospital?!"_ It's not easy. Especially since I'm diabetic, which means I also have to avoid simple starches and sugar.
@andromedaspark22418 жыл бұрын
It's impossible to eat while hospitalized if you have most dietary limitations. I don't eat milk or soy, and just that alone made it so that sometimes the kitchen would send up a dry box of corn flakes and a box of apple juice. I'm not a vegetarian either...would've totally starved in that case. Every meal was a challenge. I just gave up and lived on jello. Not sure how you were fed either if you were in a US hospital too.
@rachel99338 жыл бұрын
NoJusticeNoPeace wow it must be really hard being vegetarian and allergic to all that! I'm vegetarian and allergic to nuts and everyone keeps saying 'wow that must be difficult' and I'm like no it's really not that hard there's not many nuts in most veggie food. It must be so hard for you to eat in restaurants. Props to you for staying vegetarian with your allergy! :)
@NoJusticeNoPeace8 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I'm not 100% vegetarian. I think they call people like me "flexitarian." My objection to eating meat stems from not wanting to support the meat industry, which is both unsustainable and disrespectful of life by turning animals into a widget on the capitalist assembly line. If I catch a fish myself, I'll eat it. Likewise, if I find meat dumpster diving, I'll eat it. And if friends bring back meat from hunting, I'll eat that too. None of that happens very often though, so 99%+ of the time I'm vegetarian. And even though I'm allergic, I sometimes end up eating legumes anyway. I like hummus so much that I'm willing to put up with a swollen tongue and sores in my mouth from eating it once in a while.
@rachel99338 жыл бұрын
NoJusticeNoPeace ah ok I get it. I thought you were more like vomiting and anaphylaxis like me! Must still be difficult enough though
@NoJusticeNoPeace8 жыл бұрын
+Rachel Davis Depends on the legume. Peanuts and kidney beans don't cause much reaction, but chick peas and soy are worse. (Oddly, fermented soy doesn't seem to bother me.) And lentils are the worst for me, and cause gastrointestinal distress along with a swollen tongue and swollen throat. It's been gradually getting worse over the years, so I may end up in your shoes eventually. It would be sad if I had to give up hummus. I guess I'd have to switch to baba ganouj.

Why do people act like "Vegan Food" is something other than regular food. It's just food with some ingredients that you may not eat regularly but really most of the ingredients you do.
@TheLobstersoup8 жыл бұрын
Vegan deserts are probably the most expensive thing to make. Almond, Cashews, natural sweeteners all come at a cost. So yeah, this is high quality food, but out of the price range of many people. This is good vegan food though; just really very fat, if you look at the ingredients. There are all these substitute products (like fake Egg or Meat substitutes), which are basically just made up in laboratories and are neither healthier nor environment friendlier (tons of energy used in the process, based on monocultures in farming). Vegans are excellent cooks when they are actually knowledgabe about their craft. And then there is the other 99% that will just annoy the hell out of you, buy convenience food and throw a shitstorm your way if you don't have a dedicated knife in the kitchen that never was used to cut meat. Seriously this happened to me: I made a vegan quiche for a friends friend, who was coming along to a dinner he wasn't invited to. I always like people around and wasn't that much bothered I had to make an extra dough, extra topping and a 2nd cook session to get it all ready before people arrived. And this guy refused to even try the vegan style, because it was cut with the same knife as the other one. Upon realizing that he took offense to that, I even wanted to get another knife, but seemingly all my knifes are tainted, because I am a real cook (by trade) and apparently have hatred for all things alive. He sat there sulking, while we enjoyed his vegan quiche as well. It's these kind of vegans that give them all a bad rep. Nothing wrong with being vegan. I admire people, wo are able to spend so much time and effort on food preparation. I don't admire those, who cannot cook, buy convenience or take-away vegan and rain hell on normal eaters for having a steak every two months. Life is barely affordable to me (why do cooks get paid so little, btw), so I cherish the steak I have once every two months. If vegans can live without taking that away from me, I can live with their expensive deserts ;) Maybe I can afford to try one sometime.

TheLobstersoup Omg, I fucking love your attitude and outlook on this subject!💁🙌👍👌👌👏👏👏 My husband and I have been vegan since 2013, but do we act like superior assholes and think we reign supreme to meat eaters? These kinds of vegan foods are actually vegan junk food. Most of them aren't even healthy. Real food is healthy, plant based with no added substitutes etc. I'm vegan and I do understand what you mean. It's not nice seeing anyone with an attitude when you go out of your way to prepare them a meal. Nice of you to try.

Zoe Moran yeah, but they are deserts after all. It's okay to sin a little bit. And while I don't think vegan cheesecake is cheesecake I still find it delicious.Thanks for the kind words everybody. I have nothing but admiration for people, who passionately cook and are curious about food ideas.
