This legit helped, about to load a friend's bike on and realised his clutch plates aren't separating, after investigating found yeah the outer basket has grooves. So as a temporary fix, will be doing this so we can rip tomorrow and replace later. Excellent video

Pulled my 95 XR600R apart yesterday and found the reason for my slipping clutch- a severely worn clutch basket! I despaired because the part isn't made anymore. Then I found your video. Thanks so much. I'll be doing this tomorrow!

@@SwapSupra it fixed my slipping clutch. I filed down the grooves and did nothing else to it and the slipping went away.

Great Video! I've done the same thing and now the gear shifting on the bike is smoother! The downside to this is that this is a temp fix unfortunately. That aluminium is not suitable material for this. One thing to note, after I did this, I notice a slightly noisier bike with slight more 'vibrations' to it.

most files have a safe (non cutting) smooth side as well. You can use that side on the bottom so it doesnt take any material off
@NoNonsenseKnowHow3 жыл бұрын
Good point you bring up. All of my files have cutting on all four sides. I'll have to double check though

I know this is an old discussion but, I wonder how applying a hard ceramic coating to these parts might avoid the ridges developing? Super durable coatings are being utilized more and more on internal engine parts and this seems like a good place to do that. Along with preventing the ridges from developing, the lower friction surface should make for an easier clutch pull as well.

I think its the fact that we don't expect to see large mileage on bikes is a factor...i am just restoring a 1979 Honda dohc and it only has 20 thousand miles on the clock and looks correct. I don't think many classic cars would have escaped use.
Is there a video that shows to put the clutch back in?

@kirbylee572 жыл бұрын
How long will a careful first time file job last before it gets noisy and begins to fail? Seems so much better to get a new basket , but thats $300 and you're still going to have a half worn out inner basket, old springs, and cushions. One could spend $1000, and have to do all the work yourself. I saw a new basket for $215, and one for $400. Will the cheap ones hold up ok riding one to two hours a week?
@chriscs90802 жыл бұрын
Just replace the springs with heavy duty springs and the plates and it will be fine .. no need to file . One to two hours is nothing , make sure don't buy any Chinese shit crap .. better from Taiwan or India .
@NoNonsenseKnowHow2 жыл бұрын
Thoseo's heavy duty springs can be really hard on the hand. Especially in the nitty-gritty trails
@chriscs90802 жыл бұрын
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Personally I have no issues with heavy duty clutch springs , actually I prefer it but you can also use a hydraulic clutch lever 👍
@kirbylee572 жыл бұрын
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Thats what I thought. I filed the grooves on both inner and outer. The friction plates still look good. I cant tell about the springs. I dont want a stiff clutch lever. I hope it will last through the summer at least.

got a 86 xr600r that just needs put back together if anyone is in the market. smoked the rings on it so I took it apart immediately and had the cylinder and head sent off. has a .10 over piston and fresh valves. something knicked a valve ever so slightly. had the seat cut and a slightly larger valve was put in its place. it has original plastics and original dual carbs that work beautifully. May need some brake clean and air through it to clean off any residue from sitting for a year completely down to the frame. ready for restoration just needs the motor put back together. everything is there to put it together including a new timing chain and full set of gaskets. what should I try to get out of it? if anyone is interested ask for my email
