This is a fast-paced overview of what's involved with replacing the cylinder head gasket on a Honda Civic 1.7L engine. 2001 to 2005. Jen's car was overheating and constantly blowing through antifreeze. Her heat also did not work(always blew cold).After some preliminary diagnostic I determined that the head gasket was allowing combustion gases to blow into the cooling system. Very common problem on these Honda 1.7 liter engines. We ended up replacing the piston rings and honing the cylinders at the same time which is going to be in part 2 . This is not a step-by-step video. It's meant to be just an overview with some tips and important points. `

I did a "tip and slip" headgasket on a older civic. Just removed the intake bracket, exhaust manifold and cam pully then pulled the gasket out/in. Drove that car for 5yrs.

I got to this and it irritates me when i see him take the water pump off cause the mechanic I was going to use was going to charge 2700 to do the head gasket and water pump to find out that ya have to take the water pump of to change the gasket is frustrating

I have done 2 of these recently. The second only to clean out the EGR system after I saw how much carbon was deposited in the first. I am convinced that plugged EGR systems are a cause of head gasket failure. That aside, about the nuts/bolts that appear hold the intake to the head. You only have to remove the two outside lower corners with the long nuts (easy), and the middle top nut (easy to remove but careful you don't lose the nut (use a magneted wrench if possible. The bottom two bolts are the most difficult IF you try to remove without pulling out the entire intake assembly WIT the aluminum EGR plate. Presuming the fuel, vacuum, and electrical connectors are removed, the whole intake assembly should come off. Once it is off, you can lift the assembly to access the two lower remaining bolts. When reinstalling, ensure you install and tighten these two bolts into the EDR plate first. SO much easier that trying to remove or replace them while hanging on the head.

This was a huge help, thanks for showing each set of fasteners and getting right to the point. It can be tricky if you don't know where all the little 10mm bolts are, but this video made the process a lot smoother.

Hey man thanks i have an 04' civic 1.7 sohc that i just bought, plan to change cylinder gasket as well, but now i thinking on changing everything-timing gasket, water pump, to thermostat, valve gasket, piston rings, alternator. Great vid, gkad to see someone else doing it before i try gives me a bit of a go ahead

One thing I found that worked at getting those stubborn bolts in the back where you had 5 different wrenches including a stubby, I just used a 1/2 inch and a 12 mm from above. Didn't strip them either. It was able to come off smooth as butter that way! Just figured if anyone else doesn't have that array of wrenches maybe give that a try. Edit: used this technique while putting them back on and it was a breeze. just slowly put them on : if the 12 mm didnt spin it on first try, I switched to the half inch.

Excellent video with very good sound quality. I liked the way you pre-disassembled to keep the job rolling. The really superior points are showing us the 'special' tools you made. (I resemble that). And the superior tip on hand 'machining' the top of the block. With that being said, I know I will not attempt to work on that Honda. I bought new a '77 Civic CVCC. It had a head gasket recall. That was one really crappy vehicle. The engine and manual 5-speed transmission had major problems. The 3rd gear synchro broke and the cam shaft lobes were fracturing. I had to rebuild the carb with Honda kit 2 times while I owned it. Starter went bad. The timing belt job was the only easy maintenance about it. In just 4 years and only about 80k the body rusted in half just behind the front wheels. I would never buy another Honda new and if I bought a used one I would know just what their piles of junk are worth.

Thanks for these video 📹 I had the same problem whit my Honda Civic 1.7l vtec it was blowing the antifreeze into the canister and it was overheating even when the fans were on it turned out to be the head gasket I changed it and water pump and timing belt now it doesn't overheat no more runs like a baby 😇🙏👍

I had a Honda CVCC years ago, in fact replaced the engine and put so much money into it, including the thermostat, water temp sensor, only to find out that the radiator wasn't allowing flow and overheating the engine!... Hope this helps other's out there!... Overheating is common with the CVCC's.

@@anthony-zc1pj You should have an air bleed valve near the intake manifold that will allow you to bleed the air out of the cooling system. Least that is what my Honda CVCC had. You may also want to check to find when the thermostat opens, as it may not be opening at the right temperature or someone could have reversed it opposite from the directional flow. Sometimes the bottom of the radiator gets plugged later on, check for the flow after bleeding the air out of the system. There is also a temperature coolant sensor located usually on the front of the block that may be faulty (turns the electric fan off/on) and there are testing procedures that will tell you if the sensor is working properly. Just some suggestions as to where to check about overheating of the engine. This website people are talking about: The bleed bolt is on the back of the block near the oil pressure sensor and the oil filter. It's a pain to loosen, even when you have the engine out of the car... I wouldn't use it. Just raise the front end of the car up and turn the heat on full. It seems really special that cleaning the pistons will not necessarily take out the whole engine with an engine hoist. Hope you can share about main/crank and rod bearings in the future.

Wat sensor is it? I just broke a sensors on the left side near the area between the air box and grounding cable, its sensor is directly bolted into the engine looks like i need a 20 or 21 mm socket to remove it

Would you do the rings or inspect the bottom end at all? I figured rings since you're most of the way and waiting on the head shop anyways. absolutely top notch video! I did this on my 99 D16Y7 civic there was barley any hoses intake was easy to remove I was done in like 3 hours them my 04 civic busted it's head gasket and I was going nuts there's so much more to this dam car thank you for all the detail wish me luck i got this I'm a bit nervous hopefully I don't have to call the junk yard to come tow it away.

How much time is budgeted for a head gasket replacement in a shop setting? How long did it take you? Is it a realistic weekend job, minus the machinist and assuming a flat block?

Very informative walkthrough, thank you! Now what do I tell the machinist what I need done to the head? Don't really know the linggo from what can be done to the head. I read from forums "cleaned and resurfaced", which sounds exactly like what I'd want. Just basic maintenance and nothing fancy. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks again for a great video!!! My 03 Civic still runs great and does not have a blown gasket but has 220k miles. I just wanted to do this to hopefully prolong the life of the engine. Had this car since mile 1 and always maintained it well.

Yeah just tell your machinist that you want it cleaned, inspected, and resurfaced. Getting a valve job wouldn't be a bad idea, but if you inspect it and everything looks okay then probably be okay without if you didn't have issues before

Got an odyssey with a snapped timing belt. Also got a same good motor on the side. Can I swap the heads from the good motor to the snapped timing belt motor, install new headgaskets and call it a day or I still have to resurface the heads?

I would definitely recommend checking the heads for cracks or warping. But no I'm sure you would be fine if you just swap them

I read Honda has a TSB saying that they rec a different gasket and head bolts PN#s after a head gasket failure vs. "other reason"

Re did my cylinder head, didnt check for warpage, overheating and losing coolant. About to take it on again and make sure its all good, how much does resurfacing average in price?

You could pack paper towels in the cooling jackets. Or just flush them out. It's just a little bit of dust

That's great to hear! I actually started working on editing part 2 last night. It doesn't go into that much incredible detail on reassembly. Just an overview. I should probably have it posted sometime this week

Just curious, how long did this entire job take you & how much did the parts cost you? Thanks for leaving all the materials in the description, big help! Edit: I also have another question. Aside from doing the head gasket. If I were to replac the engine itself, is it manditory to replace the radiator, radiator hoses, & purchase new fans? Thank you.

I don't remember exactly. Probably something like 10 hours. Didn't really add up the parts cost either since it was my girl's car. Also, no it's not necessary to replace the radiator and other components if replacing engine. But certainly not a bad idea to inspect them and replace it damaged or problems

If you are using a breaker bar for the balancer bolt, loosen it before removing the motor mount.

D17 head gasket replacement WITHOUT ABS = simple job. D17 head gasket replacement WITH ABS...a lesson in patience, ANOTHER lesson in patience, a journey through your assortment of standard depth sockets, deep well sockets, socket extensions, ratcheting wrenches, combo wrenches, universal joint adapters, specially constructed mirror tools and lighting tools and to see around, under, and behind objects, manually dislocating thumb ligaments for “special” bends, removing a layer of skin on the back side of your hand for “additional” working clearance, a long decision as to whether or not it can actually be done “WITHOUT” removing the ABS unit (it can, I’ve done it multiple times), etc, etc. Truth be told...”that is pretty much the truth”. In addition to taking pictures and video of the disassembly, take pictures and video (or notes) of the TOOL SELECTION that enabled you to remove each and every bolt all around the ABS UNIT !!! Haha, just kidding, it’s actually WORSE than that !

Yikes. This one makes me just wanna pay Mechanic.😅 a lot of your videos make me think I could do that and save some money but not this one. I think if I had to go this far, I would just pull everything out and completely rebuild it. It also makes me realize if I ever design a car defenders in front end are going to pop right off so you have access to everything everything😂 you’ve got way more patience than I do lol
