This is, I believe, the best joke telling I’ve seen from Norm. The way he almost adopts a character when he gets to the Uncle Terry part and progresses through the war flashback, getting more and more ASMR and even affecting a kind of old timey war captain kind of cadence etc, not to mention the “faaaaarr from these shores” bit and then staring off into nothing when he recalls the troop abandoning him. Norm is the expert in these overlong, aimless, wandering, jokes with simple, dumb, ridiculous punchlines. That's the joke - that how long it takes to get to that punchline is as much the point as the punchline itself. I always wondered whether these are legit jokes, or whether Norm makes them on the fly and adds a lot of his own spin on them to drag them out.

As Norm takes you through the story, you're picturing the classroom, the hatchery - thank God for the hatchery! - and finally "d'Nang." You are waiting, then forget, and waiting again for the punchline. Then Norm delivers the final shot... like Uncle Terry with his Kalashnikov.

It’s one of the best, along with Russell brand, super Dave, and then from the Netflix series, judge Judy and Carl Reiner, jane Fonda, not everyone is sharp enough for him but when they are it’s magic, I’m a Brit and he’d have killed it here, should have been world famous , don’t usually dig stateside comedy other than curb and Larry sanders.
