This video adds further helpful points RE my question to you previously concerning the diff between Normalization and Dialogue Leveler. Thank you. If one chooses to Normalize on the Deliver page for hobbyist/family videos, which mode would you suggest, the Sample Peak Program or True Peak, or maybe even a different one? As Normalization is volume-related only-thank you for that clarification- and since there is also a field for Target Level dB to be filled in, it seems like the Mode drop down is really only useful for Social Content providers.

OK, so use Normalize at the end of the pipeline to set platform-specific levels *after* you make everything nice. But what about at the very beginning? Like the Color Page Primaries have an AutoBalance button that does not give you a finished product, but it gets you in the ball park. Would you use Normalize to do a rough first pass?

You can certainly normalize the audio in the beginning of the process if you'd like, no harm in that. I never do, I always manually adjust it, but running the normalization can save a little bit of time. But after that, you'd go on to add EQ, Dynamics, and FX.

If you do normalize, then normalize the peaks to around -8dB or so, that way you have enough headroom while mixing. If you normalize to 0dB or -1dB and then add a boost with an EQ, you could be going over 0dB and clipping. There's no need to mix this hot and you'll only be fighting yourself during the entire mixing process, so make sure to give yourself plenty of headroom up front and everything will go a lot smoother.

You can try that, but I'd just check the loudness before rendering out the video. If you are comfortable with EQ and Dynamics, Loudness is really no big deal to check and set. 😜

That could work, but a little risky in my opinion. Videos that are atomically limited by the platform don't sound good. Platforms won't raise the volume to it, they will only limit it if you go over.

Yes, I'm sure. A platform like KZbin will throw a limiter on your videos if you go over the maximum allowable LUFS levels. Sometimes it can be ok if you aren't too far over the allowable level, but too much and it's not going to sound good. For me, I'd rather control all of my audio instead of letting a platform decide where my audio should be. 😜 If you look up videos on Loudness you'll see more info about it. I've got an older video on Loudness and Chadwick has a good video on it too.

What are your thoughts on the following?: I'm considering trying the Davinci YT normalization on my gaming videos. Although I have already set my audio levels, my videos have varying loudness levels because of the ups and downs of adventure gameplay. I saw one video was content loudness -0.4dB, and the next video in the series was content loudness 0.8dB. I think there must have been louder parts to the gameplay for longer in the 0.8dB so it was turned down, because I edit several episodes on the same timeline with the same audio settings for commentary and gameplay. Am I just overthinking it? This is usually as far as the variations get because of all the compressors and limiters on my audio tracks - it's pretty tamed and consistent already. I notice it has to essentially two-pass in render for the audio normalization.

So the normalization is not gonna do anything other than change the overall volume of your audio. It’s not gonna add any compression, which is what you probably want to do when your case. Normalization is only an audio volume adjustment, it does not apply any dynamics. I would say jump in to the dynamics panel and use some compression on your audio to help even things out. After you’ve edited your audio, you always want to check your loudness levels to make sure you’re below the allowable limit of -14 LUFS on KZbin.

I've had a very weird bug where if I select normalize audio in the output the 'output' is rendered at 1000+ fps and the result is both tiny and unreadable by any program. No idea why that happens, but it does every time.

What do I use if I need to actually adjust the dynamics of the audio. Specifically making loud forground audio quieter, and the background audio louder? My use case is that I'm an FPV drone operator who chases drift cars around a track. I need to reduce the onboard drone noise, while being able to enhance the exhaust notes of the cars I'm chasing and the screeching tires.

In that case, I would make sure your clips are in their own track, go to Fairlight, open the dynamics panel in the mixer and apply some compression to reduce the louder parts and use the make up slider to make the quiet parts a little bit louder.

No, you don't have to find any frequencies or separate out any audio. Just use some compression on the track and boost the makeup a little in the dynamics panel.

hi ... I have this questions see if this is possible in Da Vinci resolve. suppose I want to adjust duration of clip but not want to lose content. instead i want speed to increase. basically when I adjust slider to shorten clip length i want speed of clip to increase but content to stay as it is.

I'm little confused, you can't keep the same length of the footage and speed it up with out adding footage to it....🤔 You'd need to have a longer clip than what is in the timeline so when you speed it up, you can make it longer - the same length as the original.

@@JasonYadlovski for eg. I have 2 mins of footage i want to keep all the frames but I want length for footage to be 1min 2 sec. In expense of speed. When I reduce 2 mins to 1.2min it's obvious that speed can be increased. But the catch is i don't know this exact 1.2 sec. I want some flexibility on reduced size so I want to reduce size using slider (dragging till it matches the audio below). So I want to reduce length in expense of speed.

I would never normalize unless my audio is perfect and not meant to be processed further. Instead i would subtractive eq and then eq with preamp and then compress limit and then compress level and finally lufs maximize/limit ! So.. no normalize if you can !

Hi Jason, First of all let me thank you for your super helpful tutorials here - It helps a lot !! I know you are a busy man, but I am fighting with a problem and spent endless hours to solve it - WITHOUT success up to now. I export my videos in DR 18.6.5 (on a Mac) and all is fine (locally, after uploading to KZbin). Only when I upload the clip via my phone (Android) to IG as a reel the original sound is gone. It's just muted. I checked all export settings I know of, and all seems fine ... What could possibly be the reason for "no sound on IG" ... ? Any ideas ?? I guess a solution might help a few others out there ...... :-)

Hey! Glad the video was helpful! If the clip has audio on your phone before the upload, I feel like it's something with the upload to IG or some setting on IG. I haven't run across that problem before. That's a strange one.

The video looked OK to me. I find that watching KZbin tutorials at anything less than 720p with a desktop monitor is blurry. What resolution is your phone running at?

Good point, I find the same thing. I always change the quality on KZbin to a minimum of 1080, usually higher if I’m watching in a computer. 👍 otherwise it doesn’t look clear/sharp.
