Munchies

Күн бұрын

We travel to the northernmost parts of Norway and start off in Finnmark where me meet the young Sami reindeer herder Jon Mikkel. Jon Mikkel is carrying on the family business and tradition, and he takes Halaigh on a life-changing experience on the mountain where they catch a reindeer and butcher it on the snowy peaks. Jon Mikkel’s grandmother then cooks up a feast of reindeer tongue and blood pudding, before Jon Mikel teaches Halaigh about the indigenous singing style called joiking. Further up the northern coast, Halaigh heads out on sea to catch some of the most delicious - and biggest - king crab on this planet. The captain is a man of few words, but he ends up cooking a glorious meal of fresh crab claws and "special sauce".

I'm Native American from the Arizona desert in the US. Looking at the Sami people, it is amazing to see similarities. I'm part Navajo and when I was young, we slaughtered a sheep in the exact same way. They made me hold the bucket for the blood which was made into blood sausage. I hope these people keep their culture alive and strong. Hózhó my indigenous brothers and sisters.

Sami culture is strong, they have got alot more rights and even have their own parlament. The land up here in Finnmark is own by the people not the state as it is in the rest of the country, we are still part of Norway. I can't tell for sure but some research suggest that I might be part Sami, I know for sure that on my fathers side I am part Kven wich was a group of people also living up north in the area between sweden and finland. But this is how it is up here in the north, many do have mix herritage. More and more young sami people do feel more comfortalbe with their sami herritage and that is good. Norwegians do love nature, we are all part of nature and even that it might seem that we do not care at times, we do ... we live by the nature if it is fishing, live of the land .. many people loves to fish in rivers or ocean, picking berries and collect what the nature offers but also remember to not overdo it, so it is not sustainable.

Uh, they're not. Which is why religious slaughter is relatively unhumane in comparison to stun methods.

+jodawgsup not all religious slaughter is bad. Islamic slaughter of animals is actually quite humane
@jodawgsup
@jodawgsup 7 жыл бұрын
cool guy no, it is not. There's been studies regarding halal (as well as Jewish) slaughter, and it was found that no matter how clean the cut, bleeding out is still excruciating for the animal. Especially in comparison with a stun gun, where it feels way, way less pain. Religious slaughter ought to be prohibited.
@coolguy-ze1gs
@coolguy-ze1gs 7 жыл бұрын
+jodawgsup animals killed with stun guns are usually kept in very bad conditions and are killed with stun guns for the sake of getting it killed, processed, and sold quick. Cutting throat also isn't excruciating. The law in both Jews and Muslims required the sever of a the windpipe and major Arteries in ONE CLEAN SWIPE resulting in instant shock and unconsciousness similar to a stun gun

Norwegians and Samies are both indigenous to Norway, just from different parts. Norwegians stop moving up north when they reached the area of Trøndelag. They were in the west, south and east... and the samies in the upper north. Though there were a few sami groups living in the middle part of Norway aswell. Felt like I needed to adress that... ;)
@jo_magpie
@jo_magpie 6 жыл бұрын
indigenous has a different meaning legally then your definition. It's not mainly about being first, but about having a different (most commonly a "nature-based") culture then the majority culture and being established in an area before the creation of a nation leading to some sort of oppression or assimilation attempt. This is according to the UN btw.

I actually know sami people who learned english before they learned norwegian, because they learned it through videogames and movies. And when they learn norwegian, they often talk with a southern accent because they learn a lot from the tv. And most of the tv-shows in norwegian are made down south.

5:54 - Those reindeers are looking at their buddy being skinned, gutted and dismembered with no concern. No growling or bugling or making some sort of "hey, do you see what those humans are doing to our pal?" If all the reindeer got together and suddenly charged the people to be rid of the apex predators culling their herd, it would also stop the food the humans bring. Same with if the big herds of large ungulates like ibex, wildebeest and cape buffalo being preyed upon by lions in Africa decided to attack the lions in a big group, they could eradicate their primary predator and only take a few casualties, but the herd would have problems with overpopulation and famine.
