@@jonathangreenberger2977 You are correct. NL's position at 6:52 is winning, though counterintuitively you have to let the defending side promote! His new queen will block the escape square on a1. Here's a sample line: 1. Ke4 a2 2. Kd3 a1=Q 3. Qc2#. If the defender refuses to play a2 and just shuffles his king, you can bring your king in anyway and either checkmate or win the pawn. Below I will describe in more detail how to think about this kind of endgame. For reference, I learned all of this from 100 Endgames You Must Know. First off, our king had to be close to assist in the checkmate. But how close? For Q+K vs. rook pawn (on the 7th or 2nd rank)+K, the stronger king needs to be able to reach certain key squares within 2 moves. In this case, those key squares are *b3 and c2. In the game NL played there are two differences from the winning theoretical endgame I have just described. On the one hand, his king is 3 moves away from c2. On the other, his opponent's pawn has only advanced to the 3rd rank, not the 2nd. So he can transition to the theoretically winning endgame after Ke4 a2. Again, if the opponent refuses to play a2, you just bring your king in anyway. *Depending on the corner, the key squares could also be b6 and c7; g6 and f7; g3 and f2. I hope you can see the pattern.

@@synchronium24 But the worst part is even at the very last move before he went Qxa3, all he had to do was go Qc2+ again, then Ka1 is forced, then NL has to do a waiting move (move his king wherever), then a2 is forced, then Qc1 is checkmate.

I watched a Danya video where he talked about how his students often make moves because they are scared of their opponents' ideas, but don't actually consider the concrete moves their opponent has. In the first game after Qc2+ Ka1, NL thinks he has to sacrifice his queen because he thinks the opponent will promote. But if you look at the opponent's legal moves, that's just not possible as long as you leave the queen on c2. In fact, the only legal move is a2, leading to Qc1#

very true. I think people often make one decision to play it safe, because they can't be bothered to calculate the concrete line arising from an opponent's idea, and then realise a move later they have given away their advantage because they wanted to play it safe. I used to do this all the time and still do it far too often tbh

I’m sure these will sound like a dumb questions to experienced players, but how does that line lead to a checkmate and not a stalemate? Doesn’t the Queen need to be directly attacking the King? A Queen can’t attack a2 from c1. Only a Knight can do that.

For me the interesting thing about super GM level chess vs regular people chess is that regular people rarely get into the situation where the super GM's make that blunder. Regular people would blunder in the eyes of a super GM after four moves, and would know exactly how to exploit the blunder. It''s just a whole different game. Fascinating.

i think fm level vs decent players is really interesting too. like so many people can get to 16-1800 but only a very small percentage make it to 2000+. When i play my flatmate who is 2000 fide (im about 1600) its interesting to see where the differences lie. i don't often make tactical blunders, but I still lose 95% of the time because he is far better at coming up with a good plan and punishing my inadequate plans or executions of those plans. Not to mention endgames where I can be up a clean piece and still be afraid of losing. Also some of it just seems to be mental; the ability to not lose focus, to be resourceful, and having confidence.

The key to this type of endgame is to plop the queen on a1 (or whatever blocks the pawn) so your opponent literally cannot make progress and then you move the king in to win it. Sure there may be faster ways but you literally cannot lose this way. When he was at his most defeated (mentally) all he had to do was move the king, forcing the black king to b3 and then put the queen on a1 and its over.
