My mom found candy i had just stolen. She walked me back into the grocery store and told the manager that i was volunteering to work for free. He worked me for 10 hours, gave me back the chocolate i stole and said, "next time, just ask to work for it". Never stole again. I became the neighborhood lawnower, snow shoveler, weed puller, car washer. I learned.

Great parenting. Instead of passing the blame on someone or something else, or saying you're a good kid and you're innocent, you see this far too often today, she forced you to take responsibility for your actions. My dad did something similar with me when a group of friends and I stole sodas from a vending machine. Had to work off the debt and learned my lesson.

yeah, same here, we stole some game cards from a store, very small value but still a steal. after we apologised and my mother payed the owner, she had us do various chores for him and others. took us hours. in the end the owner told us to choose one of those and take it. after we picked them, my mother said "now how would you feel if i stole them from you?" yeap, we got the point, not only that stealing was wrong, but also why it is. never did it again.

As a kid I stole a bunch of Lego bricks from my friend because he's parents was richer than mine and I had no Legos in my toys. I was purely jealous. His mom caught me stealing because my pockets were full when leaving home 😄 My mum forced me to go with her to my friend and apologise in person. That was also a good lesson and I remeber that even today. I am 43 today

My father OWNED a grocery store. One day my brothers and I were in the store and we took some candy. My father saw us and asked us if we thought it okay to steal from him. We never thought of it that way. We never took anything without paying again.

Great story. The last part about parents is important, Make the effort to at least give them a hug, You just never know. My old man turning 80 this year, Went in for major operation for hip replacement and I have seen other youtubers make short videos and crying about how they never got a chance to say they love them even though they had decades. They regret it for the rest of their lives, I shake my old man's hand and give him a hug and say just in case, We both had a few tears and try not to show it. He pulled through and is doing awesome, But I'm glad I finally had the balls to at least let him know even without saying the I love you part out loud, I suggest others do the same before it's too late.

My father never sat me down to tell me how to be a good father, a good husband, or a good human being. He just lived that life and was an example to me and my twin brother. I owe all my success in life to him. I am certain you are like that to your kids. We need more like you.

I stole candy in New York too, the Bronx, age 5. My mother saw me walking back to the park from the store and I was trying to empty my pockets as fast as I could while walking towards her. She saw it all. She was mostly mad because she thought someone kidnapped us, so it was a weird beating of hits and hugs! I never stole again till I was in my teens and let someone else talk me into it! Got caught then too. I since have learned never let someone talk me into doing things that are not in my heart. Thanks for sharing your story. Glad to know you're a New Yoker too. I have been watching for about 9 months and I always felt a connection with you, even though I can't do what you do, you seem easy to understand, like we could relate. I'm sure if I need something repaired I will be sending it your way because of your honesty on forthrightness. Cheers to learning good lessons!

That's just a leson in behaviour and discipline, it's a lesson in culture and right and wrong, I was born and raised a world away in Ottawa Canada and I was brought up with the same values, Right and Wrong. I brought up four kids and I never had to use physical discipline. I used tone values, my wife and I never yelled but they knew by my tone and level of voice how serious this was. One day my son stole a chocolate bar at the store and we caught him at home. We knew the store owner and I drove him back to the store with no one in sight I made him give the chocolate bar back and apologize and today at 38 he still remembers the emebarassement he endure with not even his mother knowing, it was our secret. Great story my friend.

There's a lot of youth in my family (many cousin's kids and their kids, god I'm getting old), and they always say "oh you're so good with kids." I just don't treat them like they're stupid. The way I wish I was treated when I was a kid. I was the one told "no no no" with no reason other than "because I said so." I'll never treat a child like that.

I stole a chocolate bar too. I was 4 years old too. I also never forget that. The shop owner have also captured me. I was young and very poor. I could only eat chocolate every 4 or 5 months. Yet, that could have been a shame for my family. The shop owner didn't talk about it or tell my parents. When I just remember those days I say: daam what a tough childhood I had?! Now I am a Doctor, and these tough struggling old days have made the good humanitarian doctor I am today.

This story really made me think about life and how we should treat one another. My goal for this year is to just treat people better and constantly put forward positive vibes no matter where I go. I smile at strangers and say have a good day or have a great night. Try to make people laugh and just generally treat my family, loved ones and people I meet throughout my day better leaving them with a smile on their face. Great video Alex from one fellow New Yorker to another. ✌️ 🙏

One of my boys did the same thing. We were on I 95 southbound, from NJ to Florida, and he grabbed a chocolate bar. I noticed when we got to the car. We returned to the store, and I made him pay for it and put it in the garbage on the way out. I was embarrassed when I told him that my family had an unlimited food budget and that it was unnecessary to do that.

When I was a kid about 11 years old I was a part of a group that was 3 to 5 years older than me. They were smoking, and I tried that. I bought a 10 piece pack of cigaretts and smoked one of them. I hide the rest of the pack. My mother must have noticed that something was not as it used to be. A couple of days later she confronted me with the pack of cigarettes. She was not shouting or punishing me. All she said just looking direct in my eys was "I am disappointed in you". I stopped smoking the same day, and have not smoked for over 50 years.
