Beginning at about 7:24 and continuing for the next 7 minutes or so, Doug makes a very important point about this medium that internet video fans need to start understanding. No one should ever feel entitled to anything, but criticism is not only okay on this brand of content--it's necessary. There are still far too many white knights out there who feel the need to scold and berate anyone who "complains" about a video they don't like because it's "free content." We all pay for our internet, and we choose what we want to watch on KZbin. These channels are filled with ads, and the creators are reliant on our views to make their money. It's not terribly different from television at this point. So holding these entertainers to a certain standard is perfectly acceptable, and even encouraged. I never endorse being rude, but it's time we realize that this content isn't a privilege--it's these people's jobs and livelihoods. And they pay their bills because of their fans. So it's time to take this misconception that fans have no right to complain about "free" entertainment, and put it on the shelf for good.
@Totallynotkyubey9 жыл бұрын
frozenaorta I agree with this, except for the "never be rude" In the end, both creators and viewers are people, they can all have bad days. And when you have a bad day, and your favourite comedian makes a statement/does a thing that is simply wrong, or stupid, or makes you cringe, that, for me, is a perfect justification to go "dude, what the fuck?". That is still only that person's personal opinion, and should be taken as: "hm, it made SOME people feel like this.", which just happens, that is fine. Now pissing off a large portion of people who watch your stuff, that clearly means you misread your audience, or did something just wrong. In this case, trying to "stick it to them" will only stoke the fires, since they don't have the support of the majority. Case in point: Mr Mans1ay3r makes videos with gay and sex jokes, made using game engines. Suddenly, three videos appear, that are basically just gaming clips from evolve, no jokes, not even that much gameplay, nothing. People are confused, Mans1ay3r tries the usual "it's my channel, I can do what I want" schtick, THEN the shit hits the fan. Now he's sulking or something and his patreon took a nosedive in support. So, in the end, while we shouldn't feel privileged, the creators do have some obligations to their audience. And that audience has bad days, too, especially since they are often far worse off than said creators.

+Totallynotkyubey The key to the internet is that if you're willing to put yourself out there and understand what people on the internet will say, you can't get angry and upset when people do say it. You have to take the good with the bad, it's how it works in this medium. Whining and bitching about people criticising whichever part of your video serves no purpose but to come across as thin-skinned. That's all it does. It's detrimental.

I can't recall. I've been watching them since I knew they first existed since my bro and our friends and I used to watch each other play and comment on it since we were kids. So perhaps since I'd been in it since the early days, I was more flexible with my expectations. Never give up doug, there's always so much that you can incorporate to be an "nostalgic lets play" Have you ever considered treating the lets play of a game as you would when you review a movie? Add in side characters, punch lines, Santa christ, etc. A good example of a start project for this "meld transition" would be to target movie games, i.e Targeting the story of the game. Everyone has gone ahead and done reviews and lets plays but have you ever seen a review on just targeting the story of that game? There's so much juiciness for you to combine nostalgicness in which you do to movies and simply meld onto a games story. If you think about it, movie review and game review are practically almost identical. The only difference is the movie "game" wont progress unless the viewer "player" is interested to find out more on what happens next. - Is the story good? - Are the characters interesting? - Feelings during the course? - etc By all means these are just "very" loosely examples but again, I can really see the critic reviewing the game just as he would with movies and apply the same methods/approach towards it (and then some). Doug, you must take another swing at this! Do this your way! Review the game as you would a movie! Approach this as a critic, as the Nostalgic critic!!! Hellooooo I'm the nostalgic critic, I remember it so you don't have to! Now as we all aware that *grrrrrr (stomach)* .....huh.. umm..... excuse me *cough* As we are all away *GRRrrgRGrg* ah .. ah!... Excuse me for just a sec! (runs to toilet) ..... "AAHHHHhhhhhhhh...." (toilet flush sound) critic ends up in the Mario world. Lol ok so its not as well thought out but what do you expect?! its just a quick example of a game story review :P

Can someone PLEASE explain why people didn't like the let's play. What was people's problem with it.
@zappadoodle85038 жыл бұрын
Professor Bagel Personally I like it and might not be able to completely explain the opinion (or atleast the main opinion) but from my understanding it is because people think that anyone can basically do it, which isn't entirely true. My friends and I have tried it and some of them just can't multi-task enough to do it and or make it funny. And I'm not saying I'm good but I had to practice commentating, even with friends and so does basically everyone else. People think that it is just "Fun and games and takes no work" and to an extent it is, but I think that let's players a lot of times know that they have to improve thier editing (which will usually take hours), try to find something new to do, work on thier commentary, and work on thier improv to actually provide something that people will like. But y'know sometimes people just don't like watching the game or just don't like the people commentating. And I really have nothing to say about that, if you have that opinion than so be it, I won't and shouldn't try to change that. If you don't like salad then if not going to force feed you salad for the rest of your life so if you don't like it because of that then be free and watch a movie or something!

Back when you put up the Let's Play video, and after watching, I kind of thought it was a joke, or at least meant for laughs or something, considering the choice of game. But after I realized you legitimately wanted to do a Let's Play of THAT game, I felt bad that you picked that one. I would be interested in seeing you do Let's Plays, but yeah, I don't know, the choice of game can either make or break a Let's Play. I myself have been trying to get into uploading Let's Play videos for a few years now, but any time I bring myself to actually record one, I ALWAYS end up just deleting everything I did - I have a massive shyness problem, and also don't have either a lot of confidence, or self esteem. Either way, I end up just thinking to myself "I wouldn't want to sit and hear this guy talk if I was the viewer", and like I said, I've been watching a few uploaders for a few years now, like NintendoCaprisun, RedYoshi91/RainbowYoshi21, Necroscope86 etc. Anyway, please consider giving it another shot in the future, because having the Nostalgia Critic character do Let's Plays would be fun in my opinion :)
@BigHead26159 жыл бұрын
+BigHead2615 I also do not recomment doing "blind" Let's Plays - where you've never played the game before, and would give a genuine experience in figuring out what to do in the game while doing the Let's Play. I've seen other uploaders do those, they CAN BE entertaining, but yeah, NOT always, and there was especially one uploader who I won't mention, was just blatantly the worst video gamer I've ever watched..... during a live stream he did, playing the game half-blind, he started outright asking his viewers what to do, or what certain things did, etc. He literally would NOT just experiment and explore and figure shit out like a true gamer would.

(I'm probably a little late on this, but) It's ok, Doug. I'm glad that you're so conscious of your actions. It really shows when you make fun of yourself in your videos. Your consciousness is probably you're biggest strength, and you do it better than anyone else. (e.g. Pointing guns at yourself when you say an unpopular opinion. Keep doing that.) My main problems with this LP were the constant obnoxious noises and the lack of seeing you. In your reviews, you'd show a clip, then we'd see your reaction and your face. Here, it was just all reactions and no visuals of your frustration. And it was just a constant stream of the same thing. It became uninteresting in minutes. Granted, there are a LOT of terrible LPers out there that seem to get pretty popular, and it actually got to the point where I gave up looking for good LPs. They honestly scream at every little thing and fail at making good dick jokes. And over the past couple years, I've virtually left the gaming community. It's full of those people that take something too seriously or emotionally. I may return, but I doubt it. I also knew a bunch of rude gamers who just... wouldn't get it. They wouldn't listen to me if I said I didn't like a certain game, and now they just... don't... listen, when I say I don't play video games anymore. They'd just try to shove certain things down my throat, then criticize me because of a lack of skill for the game they're forcing me to play. I stopped, and now I happily have other things to do and I try to work on what I'm truly good at. Thanks for the inspiration, and remembering these things so we don't have to. :)

I hope if Doug sees this he doesn't take it the wrong way, but I refused to watch his content for the longest time. Not because of him, but because of the person trying to forcefully introduce me to him. I took two years of 3D Modeling/Animation in highschool and one of my classmates was the type of person Doug mentions near the end of the commentary. The "You must love/hate what I love/hate and your views are invalid because they are not MY views ect, ect." type person. On top of that he hated most things I liked, so it wasn't like we had a common view on most things. So of course when he would go on and on about this internet critic who would rip apart movies that people were nostalgic about, I just assumed it wouldn't be something I enjoy and moved on. Then The NC and Cinema Sins did their crossover and I decided to give him a chance figuring he was like Cinema Sins in that he was ripping apart the movies, but coming from a place of love for the films. I wasn't exactly right about that (some movies like Jurassic Park he was) but the way the reviews were written I ended up enjoying them. If anything it felt like he was satirizing the type of person who my animation classmate was (and being that said classmate wasn't exactly all that bright, I don't think he ever caught on to that). Now, I watch NC reviews all the time. I especially like to have them on well I'm playing things like Minecraft or Halo multiplayer. In fact, after this I'm going to either put on the "The Shinning miniseries" review, or see if there are any "Real thoughts" that I haven't seen yet. NC is right up there with Screen Junkies, RLM, and Cinema sins for me. They, along with Rooster Teeth's "Screen Play" when it was airing, were what made me really get into movies. I loved watching them before, but I never appreciated things like cinematography. There are something i disagree with Doug/NC on (example being I think that the joke in the "That's alot'a fish" line from Godzilla was supposed to be how flat the character's attempt at a witty observation was combined with the fact that the guy he was talking to just gave him a "...no, really?" look afterwards) but I still love watching the reviews and wish I could've seen some of them before they got copyright claimed.

I honestly found the video just a little bit "uncooked", which i guess it must be expected for a first timer of Let's Plays. Surely it's undertoned if compared with other of your vids but that doesn't necessairly means that's bad. I would like to address to all the fans to the first videos made by Pewdiepie he was just being himself and anyway it was still raw and still not into "it". Now imagine having to put a well defined character inside the Let's Play, it has to be brought with a lot of effort. But i digress. I think Doug (hope you'll read this) if little more work would be put into this about how the character fits in the gameplay this could work really, really well. I'd really like to see the Nostalgia Critic have it's way with other games. I'm really looking forward for more of this.

One bad thing about this video is that you mention how people complain about your videos when they are getting them for free and you call it free entertainment. Even though we aren't paying to see it you are still making money from it. It isn't free entertainment, you aren't just making the videos for fun you are making them to make money. That is why you brought back the NC after Demo Reel bombed, for the money.

Anyone who hated him for that Let's Play video have clearly not played the game. It's one of the hardest games ever made and you have to be a video game god to freaking get far in it. (I admit, it's still a fun game though.)

I personally hate lets plays, i think theyre some of the lamest crap online. Like seriously? You WATCH other people play video games? Thaaaaaaaats prrrrrretty dumb. However, knowing NC and the character, the video was everything i expected, NC suffering through something from my childhood haha

Ryan Dooley Why watch porn if you can go have sex? Why watch sports if you can play yourself? Why watch a movie review when you can review it yourself?

***** Because ether you can't do those things at that moment or you want to hear someone else's perspective. Or you may just find the people hosting the video to be funny.

It's the same for lets plays. The point you just made, maybe one cant afford any good games and resorts to watching others play it. A good example is choice games. Watching other people to see their choices/reactions is always fun.

There was too much hate on the video. Why the fuck haven't I done the same to a Justin Bieber music video? :P BTW, I actually liked the gameplay video.
