--- Well aside for the "Aliens - Outbreak"-comic published by Dark Horse Comics. If you ever will be able to find the original 1988-1989-prints, which haven't been retconnect, I highly recommend reading this comic (not certain 100% how it was published in USA. But at least my 3-album-book-version has 56+56+48 = 136-pages). If you liked the tv-series like "Outer Limits" (The 1995-series in my case), then I personally recommend only reading the "Outbreak"-part and nothing further; In my opinion it is simply the most ideal ending for the Aliens / Xenomorph-franchise, certainly something Hollywood generally wouldn't even dare to do especially nowadays (for the records: I also really liked the ending / conclusion of the first "Iron Sky"-movie, just to refer something similar-style-ending). Of course you could look for the current-prints, like omnibuses, and just replace any "Wilks" with Hicks and "Billie" with Rebecca / Newt; aside for few other minor details script-wise, you pretty much are reading the whole comic in original form. (There are also some other name-changes / retcons done in the later prints, like what happened with "Butler" for example became Bueller alienanthology.wikia.com/wiki/Butler ) Something I also noticed, was that the "Theory of Alien Propagation"-part which was part of the "book 1" was moved into a separate-section in the 2007-omnibus. Just wanted to highlight this thing just case, now that I am also aware of this info. ---- ...You might afterwards hate or otherwise dislike "Alien 3" even more; at least I did when I read this comic-series semi-accidentally several years later after seeing both "Alien 3" and "Resurrection"; gotta love the "latest instalment is canon"-rule that also happened with "The Thing"-series due the video-game... (Or you may still like or dislike the movie-continuity or whatever; not judging, since everyone has the rights for their own likes and dislikes. But at least you hopefully are now aware of one of the better "Aliens-sequels".) (( Yeah I know I won't "shut up" about this comic, dear lurkers. But when a "spin-off"-comic tells far better story then several movies, the better thing deserves the attention too. )) --- --- ---
@AnimaVox_7 жыл бұрын
Pauli Haarnimo I've been meaning to read some of the comics, actually. I didn't want to include them in my original post since I know nothing about them. My post is mostly meant to cover the movies and games, but it's my fault for not clarifying.
@PaveMentman7 жыл бұрын
--- Oh that is completely understandable; I personally share similar feeling with the "Star Wars"-universe for example when it comes to companion-novels such (well, primarily because I find to get into novels in general). (( I still giggle a bit about the martial arts called "Teräs Käsi" because it's pretty much meant to be "Tekken" in Finnish (well okay, "teräs" is actually "steel" and the correct term would been the "rauta" for "iron"). )) "Aliens -Outbreak" is quite a different beast however, since it originally was more or less official conclusion for the Aliens / Xenomorphs-saga, as I kinda hinted already. But I suppose it's once again that "comic-industry-dying"-thing again which is why the "Alien 3" was pretty much "hamfisted" to be the official continuation for the franchise. And you could also blame the lack of the internet as we know today why the Aliens-comics aren't all that much spoken of. Still though, if you'd have to read one Aliens-comic-series, "Aliens-Outbreak" is pretty much no brainer. And thankfully, the omnibus can be found digitally nowadays too. For the sake of reference, here is some more info of the comic: avp.wikia.com/wiki/Aliens:_Outbreak --- --- ---

"It all comes down to directing. The directing has to try to guide you." As an actor myself, I can definitely agree with that statement. And frankly, way too many people viewing acting don't seem to get this. Be it film, stage, TV, or voice acting, especially for anime dubs, the acting itself is only a fraction of the process.
@Bogwedgle7 жыл бұрын
"It's almost a comedy" That's the thing though. It Is a comedy, a darkish comedy, and not actually a terrible one. If it wasn't an "Alien" movie it still wouldn't be a classic but I think a lot of people would have enjoyed it. There are funny characters, over the top action, plays on scifi horror tropes. It gets way more shit than it deserves. It's not Silent hill: Revelation.
@ravensknightindustries7 жыл бұрын
This is what I came here to say. Resurrection DESPERATELY wanted to be a Dark Comedy/Horror, but I can about guarantee you it was "guided" back to being a more straight horror movie during production. (They already showed with Alien 3 that the studio is unwilling to be hands off with the series.) Much like Alien 3 becomes a MUCH better movie when you don't go in expecting Aliens 2, as so many people seem to want. Had they stuck to this notion of making another VASTLY different entry, it might have turned out to be another unique entry in a series that BADLY needs to embrace the idea of going anthology rather than trying to hold onto a linear narrative that keeps giving the series issues. Alien Resurrection suffered not from what it was trying to do, but having "Alien" stapled on top of it. The two movies fighting for dominance, failing at both.

I didn't mind this one just because it was Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The only REAL complaint I have about the whole film is the alien hybrid at the end and the weird, inexplicable reason they tried to make it sympathetic as it was being sucked out of a breach in the shuttle. It almost sounded like it was screaming 'mama' and all I could think is "why are you trying to make me *like* this thing? It's not working and I just feel uncomfortable with your choice".

This film didn't really scare Sigourney Weaver away. She wanted off after Alien 3. She specifically asked for her character to be killed off so she wouldn't have to come back. Then they came up with the clone idea and Weedon sold her on it. She thought, "Well, it's not really Ripley, it's a clone, with a completely different situation, I can put a different spin on the character." So, really, this is the movie that convinced her to come BACK to the Alien franchise. And then also made her question her decision.

What you were saying about the creativity being sucked out after two alien films is exactly how I feel about zombie media for the most part- it always seems to be about survivors gathering more survivors and bickering between themselves until help comes to them and solves it all somehow. I mean, I watched Alien, I watched Aliens, and the only alien related thing I've liked since then is Alien Isolation, and even then, I kind of count that as an extention of the first movie.

Coops4tw Or the Predalien impregnating pregnant women. Seriously, this is _not_ what we meant when we wanted an R-rated AVP (aside from poor CGI blood in the unrated cut of the first movie). Not only was that done to be gratuitous because R-rating, but it was one of the filmmakers ways of answering the question of how a Queen creates her hive and army (it even has a head similar to a Queen). But remember, these were the same guys who threw in teen movie stereotypes as protagonists, turned a Predator into Michael Myers where he _has_ a goal, but decides to kill random people because the Kool-Aid man is red, forgot to add in _lighting,_ added more lazy references to much _better_ films and much more. The only competent things the filmmakers did were _possibly_ the Predalien's design, the effects and the writing on Wolf's mask (that's the Predator's name), which translates to "Not for glory. Not for honor. Not for the hunt. But to clean up the mess."

So I usually keep my eye on his movies, but I never go out of my way to see them.

The Duellists. Alien. Blade Runner. Legend. Then it kinda drops off for me. Gladiator was cool, but not really much more substantive than 'cool'. _"In a world where humans create AI and humanoid robots we're still tinkering with the DNA and clearly can't clone complex lifeforms."_ Ripley should have been the android, slowly figuring out she's not who she thinks she is. Just got home from seeing Alien Covenant, I really enjoyed it! For we fans that love Alien, liked Prometheus and also enjoy Blade Runner, Covenant is good! If you're JUST wanting another simple claustrophobic horror like Alien or a balls out 80s action scifi thriller full of one liners like "Game over man, game over!" and "Get away from her you bitch!" like Aliens and not much else you shall not enjoy Covenant. if you are wanting something with a bit more depth and story expanding on the ideas from Prometheus you will like Covenant. Covenant is the movie Prometheus should have been and more. Fassbender is spectacular, Danny McBride is really good. Cinematography stunning. It has thrills and suspense and a fair few gorey moments. yes it is flawed, it has a fair few disposable characters and recycles some elements from the previous films but I thought it was an improvement on Prometheus and I want to see where it goes next. I understand some are fed up with a franchise like this but put it this way, would you rather have more Alien films or more Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm St, Bayformers, Fast and Furious as well as constantly digging up old stuff like Frankenstin, Dracula, The Mummy etc? Its very clear the fans just have NO idea what they really wanted from the Alien franchise other to just be like Aliens again... For me its all about White Squall and G.I Jane. I grew up watching those and they shaped how I saw the world. Nothing anybody's done since has really measured up, I mean maybe Mission Impossible 2 but that's only because I helped create Belarafon and I get kick from seeing it on screen also I helped Tom develop his flowing locks look which I think improved the film immeasurably.

I believe that in the end, Aliens damaged the franchise irreparably. The people are not happy unless theres a ton of aliens exploding and machine guns. Alien 3 and Resurrection have good ideas and moments, but no, everybody keeps whining for Newt, Hicks and Bishop. I don't get why so many people have such a cynical attitude toward the Newborn. Most people like to make fun of the fact that it had sad eyes, but come on, it was a grotesque abomination that didn't have a place in the world, that's a very sad idea that was well presented in the movie.It was a freaking good character with good scenes, and very sad and touching qualities, but people prefers to act tough and cynical. I've seen that both of you have problems with films that have a theatrical style, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet is definitely a theatrical director. I'm surprised to hear that Dough actually likes some of his movies.
@mabusestestament7 жыл бұрын
Great comment. And I too thought The Newborn was great. The visual style of the movie is amazing too. And as for the rest it's imo a lot of fun.

This film series and the Terminator series have the same track record. The first two are good, the rest aren't. You're right about Aliens, which is also the case for Terminator 2. But Alien also created an annoying formula for the series and for many other sci-fi horror films.
@northwindkey4 жыл бұрын
@@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168 The difference is Prometheus is good and Covenant is at least adequate. While post-T2 Terminator films range from god awful to "fine but so generic and rehashed that there's no point in watching".
@rsfilmdiscussionchannel41684 жыл бұрын
@@northwindkey That's true. At least the two prequels have a bit of artistic merit, something that none of the post T2 sequels have.

I always viewed the Alien franchise as tackling different sub-genres of horror. Alien: Psychological Thriller Aliens: Action Alien 3: Monster Ressurection: Chase (People getting picked off one by one) Prometheus: Cosmic Horror. Alien Covenant: Trailers aren't clear. It shows instances of all previous installments.

I agree about Lieutenant Gorman in Aliens. He wasn’t evil; he probably wasn’t even an incompetent leader, he was just VERY inexperienced and in WAY over his head. They should have sent an officer with far more experience. Gorman kept TRYING to come up with a plan until his sergeant, Apone, was killed and then lost his composure. It’s clear he didn’t know what to do without his sergeant; a lot of newbie officers in the military rely heavily on their Non-Coms. And he redeemed himself when he died trying to save Vasquez and took a couple Xenos with him.

In regards to the idea of a Xenomorph infestation on Earth, Dark Horse Comics actually did that AS THEIR FIRST STORYLINE after getting the license. It was intended to be a sequel to Aliens involving Hicks and Newt but when Alien 3 happened they changed the main character's names to something else but they're clearly Hicks and Newt and it involved a group of cultists who believed the Xenomorph was God's divine wrath so they found their way to a Wayland-Yutani lab that was studying a Queen and it all just spiraled out of control from while Hicks and his group were going to the Xenomorph homeworld.

The only good things about AVPR were the Predalien design, the fact that they changed the script so the Predalien survives until the ending (in hindsight, I wouldn't be surprised if they killed it off right away), and the writing on Wolf's mask (that's the Predator's name), which translates to "Not for glory. Not for honor. Not for the hunt. But to clean up the mess."

Sigourney Weaver did intend to come back in a fifth Alien film that's been in development hell since the early 2000's. Originally James Cameron was going to write it, and Ridley Scott was going to direct, but Fox dumped the idea in favour of Alien vs Predator. Tom Woodruff and Alex Gillis tried to pitch their own take on Alien 5. More recently, Neill Blomkamp posted concept art in 2015 for an Alien 5 that would retcon Alien 3 and Resurrection. Scott was going to produce it, with Weaver, Michael Biehn as Hicks and Carrie Henn as Newt. However, apparently Fox once again decided they didn't want to do it and the project is dead. I just love the poetic irony of this. Fox screws over the Alien franchise with Alien 3 in what is probably the greatest or worst example of studio meddling, and when they finally get a chance to potentially undo that damage they do it all over again.

Rob, I think I know what you are trying to say about when you said "it seems too colorful or 'cartooney'." The problem is there was too much light. You can see everything. Compare a Xeno casually walking down a brightly light hallway to one coming out of the shadows.
@oscarmccreary88987 жыл бұрын
I know Alien: Isolation is a game but if you turn it into a movie with Amanda Ripley and her dealings with Xenomorphs as the focus I feel it would be the start of an interesting direction for the franchise.
@Kuro7887 жыл бұрын
That'd be a cool side story... as long as they don't over sell it. I can imagine the only problem would be that it brings nothing new to the table. I personally think it would be fine, buuut maybe not others.
@ScarySeregwen7 жыл бұрын
I did like Prometheus, but my problem with it was that they just took H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" and tweaked it a little bit. It also sabotaged Guillermo del Toro's attempt to actually film the original story, which probably would have been better than Prometheus. And it probably would have had Ron Perlman in it, so that was an extra loss.
