I agree totally. Willie is very annoying and just personally i dont like when kids are involved in action movies but short round wasnt a bad character or a bad actor. To me though having a kid in this kind of movie takes the feeling of danger for the heros away. You know for sure nothing bad is going to happen to the kid, although i just remembered short round gets whipped and backslapped in the face so maybe i take that back. Really if Willie just wasnt as annoying it would make this movie way better. I can look past it but i can see why other people cant but the movie itself is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. I never knew so many people had such a problem with Temple of Doom.

Last time on Indy and the Temple of Doom: lifeboats sailing from 500+ft altitude and making a perfect landing on a raging river! Audience at the littlemaharaja's palace! Will indy be able to keep his lunch in? Seriously, this movie is so odd and bizrre, how can one not love it? Also, it's the odd one out of th entire series; no Nazis, no government mandate, just indy and Co trying to help. i think what irks people most about Crystal skull is that they basically removed the supernatural element. Instead of going for, let's say, the skull bein the severed head of a Mayan antigod, the decided to take the X-Files route- ten years after the original series ended and the hype had died down to minor swell.
@harrisonaustad94727 жыл бұрын
One thing I liked about it over the others was that in Temple of Doom, Indy made a difference by getting involved (rescuing children and village from cultists) where as with Raiders and Last Crusade, The Nazi's would have been killed by the very thing that they were searching for anyway.

@downsouth4207 жыл бұрын
ZPPrograms I didn't really find them blasphemous. Yes, they are searching for mythological Judeo-Christian artifacts, but they never ridicule the religions, only tell a story. Given that Hitler had actually reportedly found the Spear of Destiny (the spear the Romans used to pierce Jesus), it is very plausible that the Nazis were looking for the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail in real life.
@heretyk_13376 жыл бұрын
@@downsouth420 Nazis had actualy whole unit that helped them with occult- doing anything to win the war, but also because that was big part of their identity as a teutons. That was this wierd time(i mean in view of general public, i don`t have problem with that. I kinda have tendencies to look for occult symbolism and rituals myself) in science, when mythical was mixed with mathematic formula, we can tell that alchemists always were like that- having chemic and physics knowledge, yet explaining it with supernatural, but early XXth century was when those people could actually try out their beliefs and rituals in action, so to speak
@mentaya115 жыл бұрын
I agree. They really tried to treat them with some respect. I can't speak really for Hindi, but they gave a reasonable shot at Judeo-Christian artifacts at the least. Both things really existed. The grail (being the cup Jesus drank out of) certainly did, though any special powers have nothing to do with actual Christian belief and stem from mythology added over a millennium after Jesus' death. Plus, who would actually save that random cup from *that* meal? Would one of the disciples go back while on the run for their life when Jesus was on trial? Or was it after the resurrection....the week following. Not likely. But I'm sure he drank from *some* cup. The ark on the other hand...they nailed that pretty well. Not only supposed to be the actual dwelling place of God himself until Jesus's death and resurrection, but it was highly consecrated and even lethal in Judeo-Christian belief. It was kept in the most holy place in the Temple, where only the high priest was allowed to go, and only once a year. Even then, if he didn't go through certain preparation, he would die. Further, mere contact with it was lethal, even for well meaning people. One example (and validating Robs claim about the old testament) comes from 2 Samuel 6: 6-7 where a man reaches out to stabilize the ark because the oxen stumbled. Probably reflexive, he didn't want it to fall. This was irreverent however, and he died on the spot. So yeah, extrapolating it to face melting Nazis that opened it? Why not? I'd buy it.

Brad and Spoony are right. Temple of Doom rules. Willie Scott is admittedly an acquired taste, but Short Round kicks unholy amounts of ass. This is my favourite cinematic prequel of all time. 10 reasons why Temple of Doom is awesome: 1. Harrison as Indiana Jones. 2. Harrison as Evil Indy. 3. That opening sequence in Shanghai ("Now you bring me Nurhachi"). 4. The action scenes, particularly in the 3rd act (from the conveyer belt fight, to the mine cart chase, to the rope bridge). 5. The darkness and violence (off-putting for some) actually makes it easier to invest in the story and care about the characters, at least in my opinion. That's why the conclusion with the children feels so triumphant - because the characters suffered for the happy ending. 6. That bit where Indy and Short Round embrace after they rescue each other. 7. Mola Ram is an awesome villain. 8. John Williams' music is glorious. "Slave Children's Crusade" is one of the greatest cues in the series. 9. The room of spikes. Old school death traps FTW. 10. "Prepare to meet Kali… IN HELL!!!" Best. Line. Ever.

I count 5 scenes (first sacrifice; brainwashing Indy; second sacrifice; escaping the mine/flooding the mine; and the climax on the rope bridge), which is probably much more than 5 minutes. And it is possible to create a memorable villain in a short amount of screen time - just have him rip out a guy's heart! Belloq is still the better villain (just as Raiders is still the superior movie), but I reckon Mola Ram comes a close second.

@MichaelPlatson7 жыл бұрын
Mola Ram was a genuinely frightening antagonist, from his introduction to his screen presence. Many villains today are simply scary, vile or destructive but he was truly menacing and terrifying in a very real way. Also, don't forget guys, the movie is set during the time period of British colonialism and there is an underlying tone of animosity between Mola Ram and the English overloads. As evil as Mola Ram seems his intention is to collect the stones so that can free India from Colonial rule and in the end when Jones & Co. are saved by British troops the irony is bittersweet. Who doesn't want to see the British Colonials driven from India? Right?

The reason for the religious angles in the first three Indiana Jones movies is because they're set in the 1940s when religious movies were a big deal. Whereas with Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull it was set in the 1950s when alien invasion movies were the thing - so they went with aliens. If it had been set in the 1960s it would probably be - I don't know, an Elvis Presley musical.

Willie and Short Round made the spike booby trap scene ten times better. It was an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end. You wince as the heroes gets closer and closer to being impaled, shudder at the sight of bugs crawling all over someone's body, laugh at the misunderstandings between the characters; all culminating into the surprise of the whole ordeal starting all over again. One of the classic Indiana Jones scenes that Crystal Skull doesn't have. Also, best John Williams score of the entire series! "Slave Children's Crusade" is as badass as the "Raiders March", Short Round's theme is fun, Willie's theme is good, and the Temple of Doom chant is terrifying as hell! P.S. This is Siskel & Ebert's favorite Indiana Jones sequel, btw. It's very easy to find people who consider any of the first three movies as the best in the series. Can't say the same for the 4th one.

Temple of Doom is one of the greatest action movies of the 80s. It's fun and kinetic and a great adventure popcorn movie. Following Raiders, any movie they made would have suffered by comparison, but in retrospect it was a good sequel to the Indy's intro movie. If anyone other than Spielberg had made it, they would have been instantly recognized as a major new director. Detractors can bag on Temple of Doom all they want, but at the very least it had the balls to be something radically different from its predecessor, something sorely lacking in the pervasive "more of the same" school of thought regarding movie franchises. I personally prefer Temple over Crusade, the latter of which is a sitcom version of Raiders.

The stereotypes are hard to ignore for me. This is like, "Abbott and Costello visit Darkest Africa" levels of racism. The simple yet appalling racism in those old 1940s films is quaint because it's not malicious: the people who made those films just didn't know any better. The problem is: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom wasn't MADE in the 1940s, so this kind of humor isn't naive and quaint anymore: it's horribly inappropriate because Spielberg should know better.

As bad as Crystal Skull is....I hate Willy and Shortround more because all they do is scream at the top of their lungs the whole damn movie....And another problem nobody talks about Temple of Doom is that those Shankara stones....weren't really explained that well, the other three macguffins, yes I include the Crystal Skull were a lot better explained, even if the Crystal Skull is still stupid. Indian Mythology is extremely interesting, I just wish they had a better macguffin to use

So after Indy and Short Round rescue Willie from the lava pit and she says "Let's get out of here" and Indy replies "Yeah, all of us" then the John Williams score kicks in and the kids push the cart so it slowly illuminates Indy is probably in my Top 5 Indy moments. You just look at his face and you know the bad guys are screwed. I'm surprised they don't take one look at him and run away. Then you hear two punches and the guy goes flying. Best 10 seconds of the movie.

I just watched all of the 4 Indiana Jones films couple weeks ago and from all of them Temple of Doom is my #1. It's action packed, the story, the adventure and the music was amazing. My ranking would be 1. Temple of Doom 2. Raiders of the Lost Ark 3. The Last Crusade 4. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull also can't wait for Dial of Desitny

Maybe people have commented on this, but; the movie is not critical of Hindu religion or beliefs. Its villains are based on the Thugee, who were an actual band of murderers who may or may not have been worshippers of Kali and killed ritualistically to sacrifice to her. The scholarship is mixed on the latter point, with some suggesting the religious aspect of Thugee was invented by the British and other research suggesting it was real. They're certainly played up past 10, here, and many aspects are made up, but they were a real(?) splinter group, not representative in any way of Hinduism as a whole.

Temple of Doom used to be my least favorite of the trilogy, but then I revisited it, and I loved it, even Willie grew on me, she got weirdly fun later on, and when she punches the guy in the mine car I was weirdly happy for her. Some of my favorite action scenes in the series, it’s fun and insane. My ranking now is 3, 2, 1. I know it’s sacrelige but I stand by it. Raiders is 3 for me. I don’t think it’s saying much though, something has to be 3

Im a die hard raiders and crusade fan but there is one thing i point out to people: marion in raiders is actually just about as useless as willie, they both need constant saving but both do help indie once or twice and both are always getting captured. The only difference is marion is such an in your face character it Feels like shes more helpful, and its definately helped by the fact that we are introduced to her in which she wins a drinking contest against a guy 5 times her size, and is helpful in that first fight vs willie only becomes helpful later. A perfect example is willie screams about the dead bodies- does everyone forget marion in the well of souls? Screaming her head off the entire time shes down there as well. "INDY THE FIRES GOING OOOOOOOOUUUT!"
@guyincognito80437 жыл бұрын
I agree with you there. The big difference is the way they're presented. And on top of that, Marion didn't find herself in nearly as many potentially irritating situations.

11:08 In researching Spielberg over the years, several times he's mentioned how he would love to direct a musical, but, he's never fully been able to find or commit to the right one. I think maybe it ties into his love of Disney cartoons, but through his filmography, sometimes you see these little musical numbers pop up. A good example is "1941," with the USO dance competition. He's trying to capture this tug-of-war between the two leads over a girl, and it's all big-band and choreography. I believe word is he's circling a remake of "West Side Story," though no word if he's fully committed to it, or just considering it in a Producer's role. Btw, I'm half-Chinese, and as a 4 year old, Short Round was what made this film fascinating to me. I had never seen an Asian kid onscreen I believe, until Ke Huy Quan, and it just seemed cool that this little kid with black hair and brown eyes (like me!) was off on this crazy adventure! Yeah, one scene in Willy Wonka freaked me out for years, but the stuff in ToD just mildly scared me. Odd, I know (but, I was freaked out by Judge Doom's reveal 4 years later!!).

Paul Villerius The Indian soldiers were quislings of the British Raj, but it shows how relatively practical the British were, successful Imperialism co-ops the local talent, and they were firing upon child enslaving cultists (not innocent peaceful protesters). There is stereotypical borderline racism but the writers tried to avoid it by having the Thugee stronghold be its own fictional principality and not part of India proper.

Back when it first premiered on HBO in the 80's, I remember seeing a 'Behind the Scenes' clip of the scene on the waterfall that makes Doug cringe. IIRC, it was considered an amazing special effect back when the movie came out, because they were using computer compositing to create the shadow under Indy as he scales the wall.

Temple is my third favorite too behind Last Crusade and Raiders but it is the only film where Indy actually saves the day he stops the cult and brings one of the rocks to the village and saves the kids. In all the other films it's the adversary getting their end goal which destroys them. Elsa taking the cup past the crest, opening the ark, or waking the aliens if Indy wasn't there the villains still lose.

If they wanted to make an Indy movie today, having Jones and the Nazis going both going after the Spear of Destiny could work well. I like the idea of having Jones just go on plenty of adventures just with different actors occasionally, all sort of in continuity... like Bond.

Honestly, I LOVE the original Indiana Jones trilogy, and shockingly enough, saw Temple of Doom BEFORE Raiders or Last Crusade, and I wasn't even 10! (I still am not sure how I wasn't traumatized for life, as I was a very sensitive child, but I'm guessing Indy's overall hotness helped...). I know Temple of Doom has issues, but it's without a doubt an entertaining piece of 80's cinema. It'll always be a beloved favorite, but I do appreciate the Walker brothers for bringing the madness of the 80's vs now, because now I'm itching to rewatch the trilogy again!

I can actually explain the PG-13 versus the R rating. When the movie was in production, the directors and producers wanted a darker theme to Indiana Jones to follow the success of Raiders, but they didn't feel that Temple of Doom was a true R film (for the time), so they (MPPA) came up with the idea of an "in-between" rating. Thus, alongside with Red Dawn and Gremlins, the birth of the PG-13 rating came to pass. By today's standards, it would probably still be PG-13, because God knows what we can get away with these days -_- Temple of Doom was, more or less, an experiment to see how the PG-13 rating would be received by the general public. Little nugget of knowledge.

They make Short Round sound more stereotypical than he actually was in the movie. First off, he never had the R/L accent that they _pretend_ he has in this review (& why they felt the need to mimic him with one I don't understand), & second, how can a role be racist if he's the race that the role is written for?

When Crystal Skull was coming out I decided to watch them all three of the trilogy. I was questioning on some the things (like that it took place a year before Raiders) and the tone of the film. But by the end of the film it became MY FAVORITE OF THE TRILOGY. I know that people don't like Willie and Short Round; but I soon grew to like them. (I even had a crush on Willie when I was little.) The one thing I love about this film is the dark middle part that leads to the happy ending. At first it seem like a normal adventure film. But when to the Kali scene and the children slaves (even one of the prying to die) it get dark. And especially the scene were Indy is getting poised. That was disturbing. But once Indy snapped out of it a saves the children and reunites them with their families and defeat the bad guys. It just fills me with joy, excitement, happiness. And it true on what they say, that you can show the most scary and disturbing things in a movie as long as it can lead into a happy ending. All and all Temple of Doom is still my favorite in the franchise.
