I prefer to just be upfront. I think the deflecting stuff works, but that doesn't fit my personality. I politely just say that I'm not comfortable answering that question.

I usually give ambiguous and vague answers or pretend that I don’t know/can’t remember. It’s somewhat polite because I’ve answered their questions but without any substantial detail. I find it so hard for myself to decline to answer directly, “I’d rather not speak about that” and the idea is amazing but in the moment, it’s super difficult to say. I want to work towards being able to use that one day.

Maybe I am too forward. But I have openly stated 3 of the following in the most of professional tone and smile, "That's none of your business.", "You're not at liberty of knowing that information." , or "Why?" They all seemed to get flustered or wide eyed with embarrassment. People know when things are NOT their business.

Of all of these, the best is, “Why do you need to know that?” I’m dealing with this right now, and I’m about to quit my job because of it. The real problem is this: THESE PEOPLE HARASSING YOU ARE USUALLY THE LAZIEST AND MOST INCOMPETENT IN THE OFFICE, and if management would grow balls and fire them, it would salvage the good, hard-working co-workers who actually keep to themselves and EARN a paycheck, not get it by a mere handout. This is a management problem, not a worthless co-worker problem.

It's horrible because we live in a society that pushes over sharing.... I don't even have social media because I'm highly private about my personal life. It's so difficult trying to be polite. I had to leave my last job because the woman literally would lock me and her into a room and started harassing me because she felt like we needed "coworker bonding time". I had to file a human resource complaint... But it was so stressful how passive aggressive she got that I literally felt like I had to leave the job.

I always used the approach of politely saying that I didn’t want to talk about it. I used to work with a guy who would push me and not take no for an answer. Eventually I would get frustrated and tell him it was none of his business and he would get SO offended. I wish I had some of these strategies back then.

It’s a daily struggle…. . Our culture fuels it. They think they have the right and the need to know everything personal about someone else. And then they will try giving you advice you sincerely don’t need it. They will criticize someone’s cloths, someone’s personal life…. When they have nothing nice to say they say “ oh, your kid had got dark ? Or your child has got fat or thin “ or some negative thing….” How are your child’s school grades ? “ some times I wonder wether it’s trying to make small talk and they have run out of topics ? 😳 It’s pathetic…. And it’s rude…. Thanks for the video and the tips, Will try all that when I really don’t want to answer awkward questions.

This is ridiculous. In the year 2020 we have come so far in accepting the rights of various kinds of people but we can't even respect co-workers. It's just insane that I would be forced to work with someone I don't know, I don't like, and even have to go so far as to avoid them and play "Tricks" to get them to leave me alone. This is just sad. This is suppose to be 2020 where we all live our dream lives and make money doing what we love. Please, for the love of god and all that is good, if you TRULY don't need to be at your job and you have SOME oppurtunity to work for yourself and be your own boss then at least TRY to do it. You shouldn't have to feel trapped at work. You shouldn't have to feel like you need to strategically hide from your co-workers and constantly deflect invasive, passive aggresion, rude, personal gestures and questions just to earn a living. I'm telling you this isn't right.

I have a co-worker who walked into the elevator with me at work on one of my first days (Violating Social Distancing Rules). A male about 20 or so years older than me possibly 25 years, and he just stared at me. In my mind I'm thinking, "If this man wants me to introduce myself, I would be more than happy to, but don't prompt me to do so by STARING at me.". I am an introvert. That means I don't enjoy talking unless it's necessary. This guy staring at me is clearly an extrovert, because the next thing that comes out of his mouth is something like, "Why are you so quiet? Hello?". He didn't politely introduce himself. He didn't ask me how I was, he just asserted his opinion of me on me and stared at me. From that point on I felt like this person was a tad bit obnoxious because he was in my personal bubbble at work (I don't like it when guys get too close to me even if it's a loud warehouse) and forcing me to talk when I didn't want to. I am a friendly person, but at work my main goal is to get my work done and to go home. I have absolutely no intention of getting to know anyone there because most of the people there don't have anything in common with me and I don't have anything in common with them. If they were to get to know me they would be shallow-ly interested and if I were to get to know them I'd be shalowly interested. They KNOW this yet they still insist on making small talk with me. They KNOW small talk makes me uncomfortable, I've hinted that I'm not interested in talking many many many times. Why should I have to dedicate mental energy towards avoiding people at work? I am not being paid to socialize, I am being paid to show up, do my job, and get out. and in case you're wondering, the work environment I'm in isn't a team working environment, so no teamwork isnt' necessary at all. it is a completely solo job.

That is an incredibly strange interaction, and I would say that even if I wasn't a fellow introvert. And complying with rules during a pandemic should be a non negotiable. I had coronavirus and can say 1) no one wants it, it's horrible, and 2) if you spread it, the guilt is massive.

I work in healthcare and it always amazes me how patient confidentiality is something that is universally known to be so important ( it’s the law!) and must be abided by but when it comes to the staff .. my lord! If someone is sick/ personal issue / bereavement etc it’s always the same people desperate to find out why people not in work so they can gossip about it. They will ( not even subtly) jab away at you trying to extract any information you might know, it’s so rude. I find it rude in general even if it’s a friend / family and nothing to do with work. If people want to share their business with you they will, if they aren’t doing so it’s because you don’t need to know - it’s so simple

You have a great channel, totally invaluable. A couple other points about some of these personalities: Bored Betty - she's probably asking EVERYONE these sorts of personal questions, don't feel like your conversation is "special." And it's equally likely that sharing your stories. Malicious Mike - has some level of insecurity. He wants to know the lay of the land and he line everyone up and assign some level of "value" to them, he's going to judge you. In fact, he wants to find something to judge you on. Sometimes you can play into their narcisism, answer one personal question and then ask them a few back and act wowed over by their responses. Narcisists love talking about themselves, so let them.

Hello Jennifer, I work at Costco Wholesale. One time, I picked up a protein shake sample from one of the Demo ladies, and right next to her was a nosey coworker on a stepping stool stocking a pallet of merchandise. When he noticed me picking up the sample, he made the comment, “Oh Erik, that means you are going to have to work harder now”. I quickly replied with a, “You’re right! Instead of making half-a-step, I’m going to take a full-step”. He instantly cringed and caved in because the Demo-lady just laughed hysterically, and the cherry on top was me walking away with my cool strut. The end. Best Regards, Erik Herrera

One of the nosy behavior I noticed is that some keep looking at other's computer screen instead to mind their own business, this may not be specifically nosy but is annoying because there are people that talk bad about someone and a little later act as nothing ever happened in the workplace, other just started in a job and act as they are in charge, some watch videos instead to be working during work hours, there are also some workers that talk trash about the other that is in the next cubicle, and there are the ones that keep making silly conversations in the middle of the office while others want to WORK, I guess those are just some of the reasons that many want to work from home, the problem is NOT the work itself, the problem is the co-worker's behavior, so please people, WORK and stop talking so much.

I have a coworker like this. They listen in on everyone's conversations and report back what they heard to the boss. I have to tell anyone who comes in to see me for any thing remotely personal to step out of the office because the boss and coworker will know everything that is not their business. They take the "always listening" concept wayyyy too far and nosy people like this are a big part of the reason I hate that concept. It really gives license to people who don't have their own lives to claim they are just managing the business when really they need watercooler gossip.

My first week at my new job occurred less than one month ago. The personal questions about what I am getting paid came in droves. Then, came the questions asking me how much my car costed me and if I am making payments. Also, how much are those monthly payments. And there are those who think they are my boss but are not. Their job title and tasks are no different than mine, however, they have taken it upon themselves to tell me what I cannot do after my work hours. It is completely mind boggling when coworkers, people I don’t even know personally nor professionally can simply approach me with a free pass to ask or tell me something beyond appropriate boundaries. After my first week, my supervisor told a coworker what I get paid. That coworker told other coworkers. And now, the attitudes I face day after day is obvious and it doesn’t even phase me. I’m sorry, not sorry, but if you don’t know your worth and are not confident to express your worth then that is on you.

I tend to ask a lot of questions too. And if a coworker shares something and then I ask them a question about what they’re sharing and if I think it might be personal what they’re sharing and I might not want to talk about it I always put a disclaimer that if they don’t wanna talk about it they totally don’t have to and I respect that and I get that. But for me talking to people is it to not to slander them or to be malicious or anything like that. I just I’m very friendly with people at work with. Not over extensive amount because I don’t like to over share or to get too personal. But I try to keep things light and keep things positive and because Talking to people I find does make the day go by faster. I hope people can be so negative why not turn into a positive conversation instead.

Iam currently forced to deal with a colleague who is like Malicious Mark. He is very subtle in collecting data, try to set up 'you and I' coonection with no context, but in a very polite way. Although I did not tell him where I live , he would say 'you and I we live in a same suburbs..bla..blax'. I tried ignoring. But it's annoying to hear it again and again. So I provided a wrong city and suburb name in west coast where I do not live :and now a days he is implying 'oh..you live tax free state' .Iam just fed up of his envy and jealousy. He is least empathetic but more interested in gathering personal data. He has to provide unsolicited info like my younger daughter, my older son, my other son...for which I do not respond. I purchased a hammer :and I hammer on a boxing pillow, thinking that it's his face, when I am forced to have a telephonic conversation..thats the only relief. Just terrible..

She comes in and asks overly invasive questions because she knows you will let her, and you will prioritize her comfort over hers. You won't set a boundary because you don't feel safe making her feel uncomfortable by saying 'it's inappropriate' or 'what a strange question to ask in the workplace.'

4:37 As funny and satisfying and even tempting to do this, isn't this perhaps a bit risky in the age of Stasi "see something, say something"? If you answer a nosy entitled jerk in a way that doesn't give them what they feel ENTITLED to, AND you make it sound crazy, bad things can happen to you. Stasi are EVERYWHERE, targeting and deliberately destroying the lives of completely innocent people. Why not just NOT answer their question, and ask THEM a very nosy question?
