To his point about Leo DiCaprio… I think the “love of the game” actors are the ones that get involved with projects where they are a footnote. From Shia Leboeuf teaching an acting class in Compton to David Schwimmer passing on Men in Black because of a commitment he made with his small town theater company… examples like these are artists, not just actors. They may not be the best but their love of the game sets them apart. Leo DiCaprio gives the impression he isn’t in love with the game, he’s in love with what the game affords him, regardless of his skill. Being good at something and loving that something is not mutually exclusive.

Dicaprio isn't on the craft level of Viggo, Bale, Oldman, Day-Lewis, Berenger, Gibson, Harris, Del Toro, Pearce, Hawke, Barry Pepper but his strategy is really smart / safe by always guaranteeing that his films will be of a very high quality before he even starts working on them (Nolan, Tarantino, Spielberg, Eastwood, Zwick, Scorsese, Cameron, PTA, Scott, Mendes) to ensure that even if his performances aren't going to be very memorable, his films at least will be.

I’d have to disagree, Leo is a great actor. Gary Oldman, Robert Downey Jr. and Denzel Washington are the best actors in Hollywood-in that order. Will Smith is a terrible actor. The only main stream actor worse than Will Smith is Keanu Reeves, but they both look great on camera and they are work horses.

Daniel day Lewis best movies were...there will be blood, the last of the Mohicans...and gangs of new york. Up until The Wolf of wallstreet Dicaprio was never known to be a great actor. I think he sold alot of people with the wolf movie but 1 perfomance does not equate his entire body of work. He also had the incovience of being an actor for almost all his life so there' alot of material he can be judged on and he was definitly not a great actor in all of them. The man in the iron mask movie, he wasn't really great there. Theres a few others which i recall he wasnt really special, where he delivered some poor perfomances. A great actor would be someone who is able to carry the film on their own, that’s how I see it. There are certain actors who will rip scenes and leave an impression that, you can’t see any other actor in that role. Take Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood, that’s is a good example. Leo to be isn’t that actor but someone who benefitted from brilliant directors and co-stars, script etc. you could replace Leo and still have a great film. That’s my take.
