Word on the street is that the ForeRunner 975 with the Elevate 5 HR sensor is right around the corner, so I'll be waiting for that one. Personally, I like the design of the Fenix 8 but find it just a tiny bit too rugged and utilitarian, and dare I say, "tactical" looking. I hope the new ForeRunner comes in around the $500-600 mark. Also, I recently learned that a lot of insurance companies offer a discount on Garmin wearables and the Index scale. I've heard some offering discounts in the 20-30% range.

Sometimes I wonder if tech companies like Garmin hate their users who refuse to upgrade from unsupported devices and laugh at the compulsive spenders who just cannot wait for their latest devices to go on sale at a later date. In the end there's no real difference if they hate you or laugh at you. I've always stuck with the "previous years" models since you can get better deals and the devices are still supported by Garmin. In my case I'm still using the FR 955 and I absolutely love it. Not only that it recieves the exact same firmware updates as the FR 965! I think we need a sports tech KZbinr who reviews "last years" models since they're just as good and at times better than the latest. There really is a market for previous gen tech. No matter what you tell yourself there's absolutely no justification for these price tags when you know the devices will be significantly cheaper in a year or so.

I think it's also a bit about us, really. If you look at it realistically, most of the tech companies actually have pretty good track record of supporting their older devices, Garmin included. I can't put my finger on it but there's this weird expectation that you should always buy the latest model, but why? I mean you can and there will always be a segment of customers who are just fans of the tech or genuinely like to have the newest thing - and all power to them - but you don't really need to always buy the newest thing. I sometimes even get a feeling that people are ... angry ... because they're somehow expected to buy a new thing and the new thing isn't new enough? But again, why? Isn't it actually great that you can buy a watch for half the price that does almost everything you would ever need? I just don't get it. For me it's much less about the company - they just do what everyone else does - put as high price sticker on it as they feel would be possible - but how people respond to it. Again, it's totally fine to buy last year's model, jesus :-D

Thanks for your video, I was waiting/hoping someone would bring the Forerunner watches into the conversation with the new Fenix/Enduro launches. I definitely agree with your conclusions. I bought the 265 last year after not wearing a watch for 20+ years. I am primarily a road cyclist, so my Edge 1030+ is my primary tracking device (with an HR chest strap). For me, the watch was going to be for other tracking (sleep, etc.) along with walking and rucking tracking. As an aside, Garmin really, really need to produce either a dedicated rucking activity or a rucking app!! When I bought the 265, I chose that over the 965 based on the basic nature of my intended use case along with the price savings over the 965. My initial reaction on the Fenix 8 launch was that the device in no way justified the crazy pricing. The new features did not even come close to the price being charged. My attention then turned to the Enduro 3 as an alternative (which many YT channels seem to be pushing), however, having had an AMOLED display, I can't see any reason why I would ever want something else (MIPS). I am not currently doing any type of ultra events where the insane battery capabilities of the Enduro 3 come into the equation. As you demonstrated, the feature set of the top-end Forerunner competes extremely well with the new Fenix/Enduro models (nod to the Enduro 3 battery life). I am wondering where Garmin will take the Forerunner line in the future or if there is a future where there will be updates/new devices for the Forerunner line?
@fitgearhunter3 ай бұрын
@@ShawnIsBatman great points all around and thank you so much for sharing and such detail! I totally agree, and am currently working working on finishing a review saying the Enduro three is not worth looking at unless you just like the old screen tech that much and needs the crazy better life that much more, because the features and benefits of OLED are just next level and battery life is right there with it. That's so awesome you've had such a great experience with the 265! I wore that one for a while actually but just really wanted the larger display, and this is all coming from somebody who hated the design of either of them because of the domed glass and plastic casing. However, I use the Oura ring, which has a very good feature for body temperature measurement. For example, when I got sick with COVID-19, I planned to go to the gym, but in the morning there was a warning in Oura about a higher body temperature. Fortunately, I didn't go to the gym and during the same day the fever started to rise. I personally monitor my body temperature very closely because it tells me very accurately whether I am possibly getting sick. The combined price of the FR965 and the Oura ring is closer to the price of the Fenix 8. So I will sell the FR965 as soon as Oura dies and buy a Fenix 8. Of course, I will lose money here, but the Fenix 8 has enough features for both :-) But for now, I'll stay in two device hassle...

The main reason I chose the Fenix 7 Pro over the Forerunner 965-or any Forerunner model, for that matter-is purely because of its looks. Nice review. I currently have the forerunner 965, had it a few months now. I came from the Epix gen 2 which I also loved. I’m torn now because the Fenix 8 looks great and I love the fact you can take calls from it which I liked from my Apple Watch. However I may hold back as a few people have said the speaker is crap on the Fenix. I think I’ll wait a few months to see if they can put an update out to fix it or whether it’s just a crap speaker. If so I’ll wait for the next gen one and hope it’s improved.

@@bikersi9821 yes I second that feeling with speaker! I do, however, feel like the design and strength and beauty of the F847 mm is a tough one to consider, and I also switched from the epic pro to the 965 and have been happy with it, but the F8 is upgrade worthy for me but that's totally just me, it has nothing to do with it offering any new features of significance because really it doesn't. I think Garmin blew it with the speaker because I don't find it nearly loud enough and that is the primary point of a speaker!

I got the fenix 8 simply because of the design. I have to have a fitness watch with a golf gps just one of my main hobbies. FR has that, but I like the design of the fenix, and didn’t want to get an older watch because it’s pretty obvious the fenix represents a new software platform, so going forward, I would not spend 600 dollars on something that’s not going to get future update support, I would rather spend the money and get something to keep for a while.

For all the Epix pro owners in here that have actually compared it to the Fenix 8, is the Epix pro UI sluggish enough to warrant the extra $200 to get the fenix 8? I’ve ruled out any other garmin models because they are either 1) primarily made of plastic and/or 2) don’t have a flashlight, which is a huge feature for me, but I’ve heard a number of times that the fenix 8, likely due to its better processing power, is significantly snappier and more responsive than even the Epix pro. I’m coming from an Apple Watch Ultra, which is insanely smooth, so this may be a deal breaker for me, but without actually spending $2300 or so to get both in hand and compare them side by side, I can’t know how big of a difference between the 2 there is. TIA!

Runner (and bike rider) here, just got a good deal on the FR965 so I'm going back to Forerunners after 2 years with the Venu 2..."down" from the FR955 because of the screen and because I didn't find the metrics other than BB really "actionnable". Besides I have an Edge 530 that calculates the load (assuming it's useful). Still, the larger screen of the FR965 was too tempting and I hear the adaptive training plans have improved, so... As a runner the Elevate 4 has been nearly perfect for me on the Venu 2 (just a bit laggy on short intervals) and it's the first time really...so much frustration with the FR235 or the FR935. I've also found that the larger and heavier watches like the F7 or Epix2 have HR drifts, possibly because they "bounce" more that a Forerunner that can be made to "hug" the wrist perfectly.
