When I was in highschool we had to get a sliderule for a science class, fortunately for me the first portable four function calculators hit the market that year and I managed to talk my father into buying me one even though it was incredibly expensive ($400 in 1970, he paid $2800 the same year for a Chevy Biscayne just to give you a measure of the value of a 1970 dollar). When the future arrives you embrace it. I've never driven a manual in my life, they've been obsolete for 60 years. When I was young the apologists for manuals said they were more efficient, that's not true any more so even sports cars like the C8 Corvette don't offer them. Internal combustion engines are obsolete, electric drive is better in every way except range and that's a problem that's will be gone entirely in just a few years.

Here in Edmonton which is 2300 feet above sea level (if you guys are in Colorado you understand the elevation disadvantage when it comes to running good times), regular Hellcats run in the 10s. However most of them are running at least a drag radial like a Nitto 555R. If you guys had street tires on that Redeye you'd have to put some serious heat into them to make them hook up, and that's only if the track prep for the day was really good. I imagine you guys didn't want to torch your rear tires too much with multiple long burnouts. The Hellcat is by far the faster car but it takes some skill and good tires to get it off the line clean. As a side note though, Teslas are awesome and it's cool how they are opening peoples eyes to the potential performance electric cars can offer!

Most folk don’t get how challenging it is to launch a Hellcat and just how much hp power you lose @mile above sea level. Bet the Red Eye lost way more than 6 miles of range per run. Re-gen, low cost of electricity per mile, no oil changes, no transmission fluid changes, and virtually no required maintenance, means the Tesla is way cheaper to run each race. Plus virtually no wear and tear on the drivetrain means a high-mileage car keeps it's performance better than a high mileage internal combustion engine.

The Tesla is super efficient which is why it can go 6 miles (24 times the distance) on the energy it used for 1/4 of a mile. Especially considering the Tesla uses far less energy.

Red eye should break 10’s with a good driver. Call that 11 flat at sea level. NHRA altitude adjustment factor of .9354 at 5200’ puts you at 11.7. Getting destroyed by 12+ second car? Bad driving, intentionally or not. Try launch control and 18 psi in the rear tires. Brake torquing is the worst thing you could do in a red eye unless you are looking for burnouts.

To go fast in the Hellcat you need to know how to hook up an ICE drive train and that takes a lot of practice, a serious skill set. I learned to drive in a truck with no synchromesh and I can double declutch like a wizard. I can also do Morse code but, unfortunately, neither have any practical application any more. It's frustrating getting old and watching skill sets become redundant but, on the other hand, there are compensations. I can have superior acceleration in an EV every time and I've got a smart phone. Hello 21st century.

Over 30 years of owning nothing but rwd v8's. Most of them modified. Never the slightest interest in owning anything other than a v8 (no matter how many turbos you stick on it). This past weekend I took a trip from LA to Vegas and decided to rent a Tesla Model Y. Never driven or even rode in a hybrid or EV before. Well, after living with that Tesla over the weekend I am SOLD. Aside from all the cool features and technology inside the car, that instant full torque is something I will NEVER get tired of. The Model Y I rented wasn't a "Performance" model, and it was clear the car is completely neutered off the line. From 15-20 mph and above though that thing SNAPS. I can't even image what the Performance version or the Model 3 and S must feel like.

Track mode is for a road racing not drag racing. You need the suspension to transfer as much weight as possible to the rear by using the suspension in street mode. Traction in sport mode. Everything else in track mode.

So much shade in the comments! Sheesh. I for one appreciate the candid video. Makes the point for me I always harp on - speed is a commodity now. It’s not important off a drag strip when a mommy-mobile will blow your doors off in real world driving. Also, tires. It’s a press car, so 1) no drag radials and 2) it’s likely a contractual no-no for them to do a burnout in the box before the race (and even if they did they couldn’t put it in the video).

I have a Y performance and I limp along also. I don’t accelerate from the light to fast because it makes my brain wonky! I thought the mustangs I owned (8) of the them ( 04 cobra, 2012 Boss 302 , 03 Mach 1 and 2017 Gt 350 just to name a few had good acceleration. Then I test drove the model 3 performance and model y performance and I was amazed how fast and hard they accelerate! I was hooked and traded in my great sounding Gt 350 for the more practical Model Y performance. No regrets.

Model 3 owner here. Not ashamed to say the hellcat is a great car. I would not mind owning one at all. It's always going to have issues on a quarter mile against a Tesla, even more so if they were in a Model S raven. I'm curious that you mentioned the energy/mile loss on the Tesla but never mentioned what the comparative loss of gas/mileage in the hellcat. Is it just so insignificant it's not worth mentioning?

I heard interesting thing from a local car dealer about the car top speed limit in China. The government's plan is to set the top speed at 150km/h for all (EV) cars, the ETC reader will also become mandatory in all cars, and it can monitor your top speed by using the 5G network. So basically, when you enter a main road and drive under the speed camera gates it will know the car is on the road, who is driving (your mobile phone gives that away), and ETC can measure your top speed even you drive a 30 years old VW Santana. When you drive through the next toll gate you might get a surprise charge.
