I like both these cars but the reality here is after the Demon failed to impress 'again' it probably got loaded on a trailer for the drive home. The Lucid owner could have taken some of the crew home then called past Costco to pick up a few things. As fast hassle free daily drivers these EV's really are the kings, but I wouldn't want to see them totally take over the drag strips. Good video, the outcome was as expected though.

From what I'm seeing at the track and on U-Tube. The Demon 170 doesn't appear to be the same Challenger performance car Dodge introduced since most are running in the mid to low 9s instead of Dodge's advertised 8.91 quarter mile time. Now I'm reading they're having power train issues.

Thank you for giving the 170 the "hit". That was a gentlemen thing to do IMHO and made for a more entertaining race. It shows everyone the real world potential of the 170, all the mechanical bits locked and loaded, and rolling! I like the sculpted looks of the potato, aka Sapphire. But I would take the purple beast all day long, a soon to be classic. In 35 years at a Mecum auction, the 170 will bring double it's value and the Sapphire will be had for around 10 grand.

@@gregmatson1470 My last car was a redeye Hellcat and with 200 less hp, it's still not easy especially with the stock tires. Regardless of what settings you use, 1st gear is so low that as the tires spin, the rev limiter kills the run before you even have time to short-shift it into 2nd gear. Any of the Hellcats/Demons are useless below 60mph without a proper set of drag radials and some suspension mods (like stronger rear lower control arms) to limit wheel hop. It's all a matter of what you like - the Sapphire is beautiful, consistently lightning-quick and consistent but it's a quarter of a million bucks and it has no soul, just a muted whirr. The 170 is simply America's ultimate (and one of the last remaining) old-school musclecar with all the soul in the world. It's just not as quick. But still, mid 9s and mid 140s in the 1/4 mile ain't exactly doggy.

Do you have a way to check the ethanol content? Or did the meter say you were at full power? In Iowa e85 can be anywhere from 50 to 85% ethanol at the pump. I wonder if some of these videos where the demon 170 is not getting below nine seconds is due to not truly having 85% ethanol in the tank (maybe there’s a percentage content where it doesn’t matter anymore?). Probably also some of these videos have demons spec’d with options that weigh the car down.

The Lucid Sapphire is amazingly quick but, at $250,000.00 I’m way out of contention. There’s no chance against the immediate torque availability of the electric motors. I can’t wait to see if technology is able to come up with way lighter batteries and maintain the range availability. The whine of the 170 supercharger is something to behold for sure. That 10 m.p.h. speed difference at the end of the race is hard to overcome. When I was a kid in the early 50’s, my Dad told me how quick the Toronto electric street cars were. He said lots of cars would try to beat them away from the lights at intersections and failed. That only happened if the street cars were empty and heading back to the car barn. That’s 70 years ago.

It's crazy how the Sapphire is only 1000 lbs more than the 170, with its seat deletes and other weight savings. I wish Dodge would make a ultra-light weight Demon/170/whatever, their performance would just skyrocket, in perfect linearity with cost...

Still a matter of AWD vs. RWD. Prepped surface at least gave the Demon a chance, but that's about it. If the Plaid could be that Demon 170, of course Lucid would be able to.

The Sapphire is insane, so the results are not surprising. Similar to a microwave cooking a steak much faster than conventional grill. Unfortunately, the Lucid Air is quite plain and suffers from the same boring-vague design implemented by other EV sedan manufacturers. The Tesla Plaid gets my vote in terms of price, design, and performance.
