I enjoy restoring old woodworking/workshop machines but there is a degree of risk involved. Unless you have X-ray eyes it's impossible to know the condition of the internals. Sometimes you spend time and money just to find out a machine is not worth restoring.

Brai for sure! Also, thats the least expensive part of a compressor - get a new tank and the motor and pump might still be worth restoring!

I'm glad you still posted this video. Some youtubers don't post their mistakes, but i think mistakes and failures are an important step in he process, because everyone experiences set backs and how to deal with them is a vital skill that everyone needs.

Word of advice, don't mess around with pressure vessels. The explosive power of compressed gas is scary. If you do find a receiver that might work have it checked out by an approved AIA. You're in Cape Town, so contact Executive Safety Services and have them check out the vessel before using it.

For the damaged one: BBQ grill. Regarding the compressor, maybe you can source a big propane tank (make sure to fill it up with water to the absolute top then rinse etc to force any gas to escape before making anything else to prevent explosions) or some other used compressor tank (hopefully a big one) then adapt the compressor to it and you will have a huge improvement for stored air volume

That's a real shame, but at least you found out before you pressurised it up to 8 bar.

A 47Kg propane cylinder/tank is a viable alternative if you have a good motor and pump and still want to build a working compressor. It will also increase the volume of stored air available. The propane cylinders are also rated for much higher pressure and as they aren't subjected to moisture it's very unusual to find one that has suffered internal corrosion. That said you would still need to modify/weld it to accommodate the inlets and drain plug. I have never replaced a compressor tank with a propane cylinder, however I have mounted one on wheels and adapted it as a secondary air reservoir (They hold 92 Litres approx) to supplement my 150 Litre compressor. At this point it has held 150 PSI happily for 10 years and counting! I added a drain plug, Inlet and twin regulator/pressure gauge outlets, so pretty much the same job minus the actual pump and motor. 😉

Well, you did what you could, Jean. But since the motor and pump seems to be good, who knows? Perhaps you find a better tank later on. 😊 Or use the motor to build something, like a disc sander. It could work very well! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

The Achilles heel on any older compressor is the tank. The electric motor or the air compressor motor can be revived if parts are available, but an aged weakened tank has a lifespan that if exceeded can become a bomb waiting to explode knocking a wall of your shop off it's foundation. Be cautious with older compressor tanks and always pressure test them with water before proceeding with a restoration.

Thanks for confirming that not all rebuilds are successful. As for uses, I’m sure most will say to convert to a grill. I’d rather see something unique like a fire proof trash to place rags and other flammable material. But what I’d really like is either a smoker for meats, a wood stove for pizza, or maybe a fire can to burn scraps and other material. Something different than a grill. Keep up the great work!

I say fire pit or a planter. I imagine the upper half of the tank is in better shape than the lower half.

definitely find another tank that you can use to take your pump/motor. As to the old one... if it is that rusted through, then only the top half really stands any chance of being useful, so fire box or planter!! ;-)

I would use the tank stand up to make a bbq smoker out of it, Weber Smokey mountain style. Or perhaps a rocket stove thingy. If not, then on its side and make it a grill with a lid. The motor and pump can be reused as well for a disc and or belt sander, drill, lathe or as a compressor with a new tank. With your present experience I would be careful with getting a second hand tank 😂. Keep on your good work, man!!

There are some tools/parts that should not be restored - and tank from compressor is one of this. U will never know what is inside and then pumping a lot of pressure inside is a bad idea. It can explode. It's not worth the risk :)

Can't win them all but I would be curious to see the motor restoration if you decide to move forward with that part. As for what to do with the tank, I figure the tank is compromised too far to use as a fireplace or grill but who knows.

Jean, it is illegal to modify a pressure vessel because of the dangers involved. Rather use it for a braai or flower pot. We don't want you injured in the process.

Try to find a similar size compressor with a bad pump or motor that you could use your pump and motor on. Worst case scenario you may need to drill some new mounting holes but you would then have a functioning compressor.
