This is a classic! But i see some comments saying its normal to learn a language before visiting, which isnt necessary here in Norway. Most of us would communicate in english without hesitation if you dont speak the language, and we would even go out of our way to keep the communication going in english when we talk to eachother, just to make sure the non-native speaker doesnt feel left out.
@christianhuston8975 жыл бұрын
I love his sheer stupidity - even if he couldn't understand the manager's words, he should've been able to judge from the body language and face that it was bad news. But instead he somehow interprets it as being offered a million dollar deal and sits there grinning like an idiot.

Obviously, when you get a job and live in another country, you must learn their language, customs, and traditions, and assimilate into their culture 100%....but my point is if you are visiting the country as a tourist for a couple a weeks or are visiting for 3 days for a business meeting, you cannot expect us to learn your ENTIRE language and speak it to you because you want us to...that would be insane...we hire translators for that...

Mandarin. Korean schools aren't that cruel :) You mainly use characters over speaking it, since there's a lot of trade between Korea and China but not many face-to-face confrontations. And Korean names are written in Chinese characters so we usually have to memorize all the flowery characters so we can name our children. Like Eun Jung means "faith and respect" and Hee Ja means "happy child"

@@august8090 In America, while you do have to learn a foreign language, you'll rarely have anyone to talk to in that language, unless you're latino and live in an area with a large population of speakers of the foreign language in question. We Americans suck with languages, admittedly, as do most anglophones.

If an English speaker opened conversation in Norwegian, the common Norwegian would probably be intrigued or overcome with joy for the fact that someone bothered learning their language, and would respond in Norwegian. That being said, as the video and the title kind of suggests, most people do speak English in Norway. Moral of the story: Don't feel ignorant or lost if you don't speak Norwegian coming to Norway. You'll be perfectly fine. ;)

We start to learn English in the first year of school (when we're 5-6 years old) and tv-series and movies which are ment for teens and adults are always in the original language, never dubbed. It's not like we have to learn English because English speaking people come to our country, it's more that there's only 5 million people speaking Norwegian and we have to communicate with other countries to function. I would like to add that we also learn a third language, mainly Spanish, German or French.
@Iivaitte12 жыл бұрын
Actually I sympathize the man, it is only right that if you go to a business meeting in another country that you should speak the native tongue. Us Americans will just become lazier if we don't have to even learn a second language. It wouldn't be so hard to learn a second language if our school system and learning system didn't suck. Jeg vil lære dette språket, slik at jeg ikke gjør narr av en uskyldig mann som denne mannen.

to learn a language is actually easy, but its the way that it is taught that makes you say "you expect everyone to learn an ENTIRE language". the best way to learn a language is to have a friend that speaks it, because they use it everyday and sometimes mix English and said Language together. toddlers don't study to learn they're native language, they just adapt to it, translation is slow, the key is to think the language, if that makes any sense to you.

The only thing you can do, I suppose, would be to write your political leaders, specifically the leaders of the Quebecois Party, and join the separatists movement which has almost succeeded in their attempt to secede Quebec from Canada in 1995. But they lost the vote by less than 1%. If you join the movement and a vote like this comes about again, then your vote can make a difference and Quebec's succession would ensure the survival of the Francophone culture, with immigration restriction...
