𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 / 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 Among the felids, whereas lions are genetically programmed for social living, leopards are programmed for living alone. To communicate with others, the latter have several options, including:
- Vocalization : the "sawing" call (repeated raucous calls made during inspiration and expiration, similar to the sound of a log being sawn), aimed at neighbouring rival males and females within the signaler's home range (which encompasses those of several females). It is in part a warning to males that hear it to change their trajectory away from the signaler's territory, and also a way of advertising his location to females looking to mate with "their" resident male. • Leopard’s sawing call,...
- SMS (Scent Message System) : olfactory messages which can include scratching on tree-trunks, urine spraying on the ground or on bushes, fur-rubbing, traces of fur and saliva deposits on a mirror to signal an amorous rendez-vous.
A young male gorilla doesn't appreciate the quantity of SMS left by the resident leopards, because they smudge the reflections in the mirror that is allowing him to learn to recognize that the image is himself and not another gorilla. Just as in humans, self-recognition in gorillas is not a simple, programmed phenomenon. It results from learning. In general, for human infants it emerges through experiences with mirrors in the calm of their houses, supported by their parents, who also went through similar learning. The parents can speak to, encourage, and reassure their child. By contrast, this young gorilla's parents have never learned to recognize themselves, nor can they use language to explain or reassure their offspring; therefore in the insecure setting of the forest, the learning experience for the young gorilla is not smooth.
Our KZbin channel kzbin.info... has over 160 videos recorded by our camera traps in the Gabonese rainforest. Most of the videos show the reactions of wild animals encountering 6 large mirrors. Don't forget to read the description that accompanies each video to know more about the animals' behaviours towards their reflections. ( kindly edited and translated by Professor James Russell Anderson)
------------------------------------

*Your feedback on my videos encourages us to pursue our overwhelming and somewhat dangerous passion.* It is a great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me. We are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. But we maintain our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then we do the editing of the videos and write a long description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on... It's a choice.. May I suggest you some of my 160 home-made videos from my channel which have never been recommended by KZbin and which unfortunately have a very small number of views even though they are very instructive such as: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIquoY2kiMaYd9U Baby elephant sleeps standing up glued to mom so as not to be left out when the night walk restarts? kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHqTYWyOga-lasU Elephants enthusiastically enjoying a healthy mud bath kzbin.info/www/bejne/boXFpKWdjsesf5Y an elephant crossing a river splashes camera trap kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6WZc5eDm9eLrqc A male elephant walks in the night, thinking of his next girlfriend. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpiwiJineMt0sLs Elephant VS camera trap in Gabon. kzbin.info/www/bejne/naLNkJWPZcxjeZI Elephant VS camera trap in Gabon. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHKye62EabWre6c a one-eyed elephant mows tall grass in front of the mirror for better camera trap field of view kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5zQgXWiabODrJo In Gabon front of trap cameras, elephants crossing Ndouni River. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXqraGmjfq6imJY Eaters of waterlilies: Buffalo, Elephant, Sitatunga kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6bEfWZjid2Ij5I African Jacana a swamp dwelling antelope-pecker: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoLdZneNaZtmaLc Shot in Gabon on the evening of the first major storm after the dry season. What happens if you could suspend the mirror? The leopards couldn't mark it like this for one. I'm curious if the gorilla males would still react to their reflection as if there was another male in the sky, and try to threaten or attack the sky-gorilla.

It is difficult to set up mirrors in the trees facing them, with cameras trap facing each of them : the probability of the gorillas meeting them is very low because they spend a lot of time on the ground. If the mirror is removed, the leopards have the solution of "sawing calls" as explained in the descrition attached to this video. *To mark its territory, a leopard frequently throws urine horizontally at trees or bushes from behind, keeping its hind legs straight. When he crouches down, i.e. with his hind legs flexed, after urinating, he scratches the ground to transfer the smell of his urine onto his feet and thus deposit it during his territorial border patrols.* On our KZbin channel, watch other amazing videos of wild animals as they reflect and read the descriptions to learn more. kzbin.infovideos Good vision!

Have you considered providing audio feedback, where an animal's voice is replayed to the same animal, at a similar volume? Perhaps the audio should be delayed by one second so that their own voice doesn't mask the replayed voice? You might need something visual to catch an animal's attention, like a painted wooden dummy of a fictional animal (or at least an animal that isn't in the jungle, like a penguin.) Inside the dummy would be the microphone, speaker and either a battery or a buried power cable. I wonder if animals who understand their own reflection would also understand their own audio recordings, or whether you might get a different set of animals that understand audio feedback. I did a quick web search and didn't find anyone who has conducted this experiment.

Hey Xavier, I recently watched a lot of your videos (and read your descriptions)! I’m interested in your opinion about the “perception” of animals. Do you think that physically different kind of eye make it harder / impossible for some animals to use a mirror? And what about the other, non visual, clues like smell, voice and touch? How do you think animals explain those, seemingly, missing features?
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 3 жыл бұрын
The fact that the images are silent and odourless may disturb some animals. Especially in those whose sense of smell is almost more important than sight. Often their sense of smell can be deceived by the fact that the mirror carries the scent of animals that have rubbed against it before!

*Después de leer numerosos comentarios pidiendo el desmantelamiento de estos espejos sádicos,* sus comentarios sobre mi videos nos animan a perseguir nuestra abrumadora y algo peligrosa pasión. Es una gran recompensa para mi esposa Anne-Marie, mi amigo Michel y yo. No estamos cómodamente sentados en nuestros sillones, para publicar sin ninguna descripción, pedazos de videos copiados de Internet y poner fin. Pero mantenemos nuestros espejos y numerosas cámaras trampa, cambiar el SD, baterías, limpiar los objetivos, quitar las ramas caídas en su campo de visión, subir a pie el lecho de los marigotas para encontrar zonas de paso de animales para instalar allí nuevas trampas etc... Empapado por los tornados, el cuerpo cubierto de picaduras de insectos de todo tipo (tábanos, gorilas, tsetsé, hormigas negras, hormigas magnánicas etc.) y desgraciadamente el número de cámaras que se niegan a trabajar aumenta debido a la tasa de humedad del 95%. Luego hacemos la edición de los videos y escribimos una larga descripción en inglés que no es nuestra lengua materna y los ponemos en línea para mostrar la belleza de la fauna gabonesa, hablar de los cazadores furtivos, mostrar cómo los elefantes que han logrado escapar de una trampa de alambre, tratar el corte profundo hecho por esta trampa, mostrar cómo los elefantes recogen mangos, el reconocimiento de sí mismos en los espejos que no es innato tanto entre los humanos como entre los primates y otros mamíferos y así sucesivamente... Es una elección... @XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 3 жыл бұрын
In felines, if lions are programmed to live in large family groups (prides), leopards are genetically programmed to live alone. So this male leopard is a solitary and territorial animal. He doesn't feel alone and dont search an odourless mate. He doesn't need any friend. These mirrors break a certain sameness in his life in the rain forest. Front of them this male leopard behaviour changes from one minute to the next, of desire for company, of desire to fight with a rival, an intruder in his territory who strangely has no smell and is mute. He only meets females during the mating season. To invite the females in heat, he emits a guttural sound called " sawing call ". This call also warns rival males not to enter his domain: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iH3YpGeYibytnK8 On our KZbin channel kzbin.infovideos are published more than 160 videos captured by our trap cameras fixed in the Gabon jungle. The majority of them show encounters of wild animals with our 6 large mirrors. After watching each of our videos, don't forget to read the description attached to learn more about the behaviour of the animals in front of their reflection.

i had a time of my life that can be called a spiritual awakening or a psychosis and probably both is true in some sense. whats more i developed an intense sense of smell during that time i would let myself be guided by different smells and stuff it was insane, i think i smelled sort of a like a dog would smell. maybe not quiet but my belief system was attached to it too meaning i was convinced i could literally smell stories and shit.

How often are the mirrors cleaned and what do you use? I suppose that you don't want to use any strong-scented soap that is maybe even harmful for nature, but plain water will surely not be enough, right?
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 3 жыл бұрын
The mirrors are cleaned about every fortnight with dishwashing liquid in order to remove the grease from the leopards' fur when they rub against them and deposit their drool. It is also advisable to remove the multitude of blood spots deposited by wasps, horse flies, mason flies and tsetse flies when they crash on their surface. With the daily tornadoes the biological dishwashing liquid is diluted in nature. It seems to have a pleasant odour because no sooner has a mirror been cleaned than a leopard comes to rub against it. My mirrors are made of 3 reflective glass panels glued on a plywood. At the joint between two panels, if they are not perfectly joined and if the glass is not perfectly cut, with a camera not placed perpendicular to the surface of the mirror, an infrared ray is sent back to the camera lens and gives the false impression of the presence of a lamp! Thank you very much for the answer. Since you are from Gabon, I will speak with you in your native language, which is French : Vraiment, vous faites un travail formidable et cela mérite succès et admiration.

leopards are genetically programmed to live alone. This call also warns rival males not to enter his domain:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/iH3YpGeYibytnK8 On our KZbin channel kzbin.infovideos are published more than 160 videos captured by our trap cameras fixed in the Gabon jungle. On many trap cameras, in the factory settings, if not deactivated, the camera writes at the bottom of the image the data during the shooting: Camera brand, date, time, ambient temperature and moon phase. This video consists of rushes shot end to end, filmed from September to the end of October 2018. The chronology is important in this video to follow the interactions of the animals with this mirror. After each watching, don't forget to hit the “show more “ option. I attach a description with more information to each of my 160 videos published on my channel. kzbin.infovideos

*_Your label is great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me._* As you may have noticed, we are not sitting comfortably in our armchairs, publishing, without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. A comment like yours cheers us up after my wife and I have spent days alone in the Gabonese forest for the maintenance of our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, changing memory cards, cells, batteries, cleaning lenses, removing fallen branches in their field of vision, walking up beds of creeks to find areas where animals are crossing over to install new traps etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then, back in the camp, we do the editing with for each video a description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on... It's a choice. Thank you. Keep watching the other videos on my channel kzbin.infovideos May I invite you to watch especially my videos which, unfortunately, have a very small number of views and are very informative like: Baby elephant sleeps standing up glued to mom so as not to be left out when the night walk restarts? kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIquoY2kiMaYd9U First mud bath of an cute new born elephant with her mom and aunts: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKHNYomcoLN9iZY Fresh Water from Creeks triggers the urge to urinate in wild mammals: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep3YenSvbNBjopo Eaters of waterlilies: Buffalo, Elephant, Sitatunga: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXqraGmjfq6imJY Can an elephant survive without half of its trunk lost in a poacher's wire snare? kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6CcmIqfbdWNp6c Before buying ivory jewellery or carved ivory objects: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJPYhZ1tpbOpfq8 and unfortunately there are many others in this case!
