Description 𝐑.𝐈.𝐏. 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬
INFORMATION about this video | INFORMATION sur cette vidéo ### English / Français.
For several years Anne-Marie and Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE, with their friend Michel DJOMO GUISS, have installed large mirrors,(+/- 244X122cm) in the rain forest of Nyonié in GABON (West coast of Africa) close to the equator line, in order to film wild animal reactions in view of their reflexion. In front of each mirror digital infrared trap cameras are triggered by any movement of animals monitored by a sensitive infrared motion sensor and then automatically capture pictures or record video clips according to preset settings.
A group of Chimpanzees, from this forest, spend numerous hours in front of these intruders. In the serenity of the jungle, they observe their reflexion.
The behavior of some of these primates would even suggest that they recognize themselves in their reflection.
However, to be more formal, the cameras have not yet recorded the repeated use of mirrors to look at parts of their bodies that they cannot see without their help, e.g.. interior of mouth or rump.
When one of the congeners less advanced in its learning in the mirror, begins to shout out of fear, anxiety replaces serenity and the self reflexion becomes an unknown invader.
He then chases away the invader by "tap-dancing" or dances of intimidation. To impress its opponent with his height and corpulence, these dance steps are performed in a bipedal position with often bristly hair, with very powerful smacks and loud slaps with cupped hand on the ground. To feel stronger, nothing is better than a tree branch in hand, but the opponent (the reflection) instantly responds to these attitudes with identical behaviors!. Moreover, this stranger disappears when he is no longer in front of the mirror.
The properties of the mirror are very difficult to understand by these chimpanzees who, unlike humans, did not learn mirror practice as children with their mother as a teacher able to talk.
While humans and gorillas are mostly right-handed, without anyone knowing why, orangutans are more clearly left-handed, "chimpanzees are ambidextrous, with the possibility of favouring one hand or another for certain tasks" (Marie-Claude Bomsel, professor at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris)
-------------------------------------------

*The non-self awareness in a mirror is not a sign of lack of intelligence!* *In animals as in Apes (Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Bonobos and Orangutans) as in humans, self recognition in a mirror is not innate. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way.* *In humans over 2 years of age, after learning in the mirror with their parents, they recognize themselves in their reflection *Children and chimpanzee females are not worried about their reflection, which they do not consider as a danger but rather as a potential playmate or lover or finally as a new female who has joined the group.* *During the first exposures, each alpha chimpanzee (silverback) effectively recognizes its neighbours among the reflections, it also notices the presence of a stranger it has never met: its image it does not know. What is he doing there? Why is he here? Why would I share with this unknown silverback the right to mate with the females in our group? In an attempt to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), with whom he does not want to share the females of his group, this chimpanzee shows his large build, standing in a bipedal position, arms outstretched, ruffling his hair, and shows his strength with heavy loudly slaps with cupped hands on the ground. These slaps on the ground must be very noisy because this alpha chimpanzee want to show his power and thus scare the invader of his domain (his own image) and push him to escape. His reflection taking the same attitude, he hesitates to fight it.* Under these conditions, learning to use the mirror is not possible and cannot be successful for silverback chimpanzees. After a long practice in mirror in laboratory, some chimpanzees have performed unambiguouslyon the mirror test, but not always. Keep watching the new videos that I put online on my channel and read the description attached to each one of them. *Well observed the crack in the mirror at the top left! but no shard of glass came off the plywood where it is securely bonded* *If a synthetic mirror is perfectly usable in an apartment, on the other hand in the forest the different points of light created by the sun through the canopy, produce false reflections in the mirrors. Synthetic mirrors and reflective adhesive tapes do not stay flat in bad weather. Reflections are therefore distorted images. So I use glass 3 mirrors (83x120x0,5cm) that I glue, with double-sided adhesive, to a 22 m/m marine plywood fixed on a wooden frame with 4 legs and 4 buttresses at the back. Not havin' a smartphone, leopards overuse the mirror for SMS to their mates. It is the result of the more comfortable training in the mirror at home among young humans in the company of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. In humans over 2 years of age, after learning in the mirror with their parents, they recognize themselves in their reflection. Among chimpanzees, in the insecurity of the jungle learning at the same time as their parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way.* *Children and chimpanzee females are not worried about their reflection, which they do not consider as a danger but rather as a potential playmate or lover or finally as a new female who has joined the group.* *During the first exposures, each alpha chimpanzee (silverback) effectively recognizes his neighbors among the reflections, he also notices the presence of a stranger he has never met: his image he does not know. After a long practice in mirror in laboratory, some chimpanzees have performed unambiguouslyon the mirror test, but not always.To learn more about these wildlife encounters with giant mirrors installed in the jungle in Gabon, after watching, read the accompanying description of each of my 180 videos published on my KZbin channel kzbin.infovideos

*Chimpanzees are belligerent apes. They are omnivorous. They eat the meat of small antelopes, porcupines, palm rats and also small monkeys.* *Gorillas are peaceful great apes. They are frugivorous herbivores and insectivorous. They dont eat the flesh!* Please watch my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGGul3Ror9eef5I This adolescent gorilla's attitude is really very close to that of his human cousins (Gabon jungle) Check out more of my 180 homemade videos from my channel and don't forget to read the description attached to each of them, you will find very interesting information. kzbin.infovideos Good vision!

It was interesting to watch the little female react. Would it be right to assume that after her initial threatening behaviour, she seemed to be more curious? She seems at one point to be experimenting to see if the image is following her exact moves. Or am I over analysing?

In the region where my mirrors are placed, the main carnivore (except for poachers who avoid going there because of the presence of more than 70 trap cameras kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHrShoBmi9OMpMk ) is the leopard. It is a solitary animal that does not hunt in a troop. It avoids attacking solitary male elephants as well as families with children because of their power of reaction in case of attack. It avoids attacking a calf in a herd of forest buffalo because of their aggressiveness. He avoids attacking monkeys (mandrills) and great apes (gorillas and chimpanzees) because of their cohesion and moreover he does not climb trees well. Moreover the flesh of these mammals is not very tasty except for the buffalo calf. The leopard appreciates small game such as small antelopes (blue duikers), porcupines and especially palm rats. It should be noted that chimpanzees, frugivores, insectivorous and herbivores occasionally eat small monkeys such as the putty-nosed monkey (Cercopithecus nictitans). Thus there is a kind of statuquo between elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, buffaloes and leopards that avoid meeting each other, all the more so because in this forest 'there is no competition for food, fruits and stems as marantaceae, being numerous in all seasons. We wanted to thank Gabon, which has welcomed our family for more than 35 years (in the retail sector), to show on KZbin the diversity of the fauna of this beautiful country and to make Internet users want to visit it. Our first videos posted on our KZbin channel essentially showed wildlife "passing" in front of the lenses of our trap cameras equipped with motion detectors: The passage of an elephant in front of the objective of a trap for about twenty seconds is not particularly interesting. On the other hand, a video of young elephants playing in a river while adults are quenching their thirst is much more enjoyable to watch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aompmIWhiMaYitU Elephant calves have fun during a creek crossing (Gabon jungle). To find such "spots" it is advisable to get further away from the path used by the few 4x4 vehicles of Nyonié, to go deeper into the forest and to walk in the beds of creeks and small rivers. This is not safe, especially when you are old. To progress more easily in the forest, animals use this off-road trail, without vines, bushes, brambles and trees mixed on the ground because of the very numerous tornadoes in this region on the Equator line. We came up with the idea of placing very large mirrors at the end of a long straight line of an off-road track to catch their eyes and "block" them in front of their image. We have also placed other mirrors under trees where numerous animals appreciate the fruits. At other locations in the middle of the forest it would have been very lucky for animals to meet their reflection. Our use of mirrors has been of great interest to primatologists, including members of the PSG, not the Paris Saint Germain football club, but the Primate Specialists Group, who have only been able to study self-recognition in a mirror in great apes in laboratories with captive animals or animals born in captivity, used to contact with humans. These animals did not have to search for food, defend their families against other congeners and predators, sometimes imitating humans, and therefore had very different distorted behaviours from primates living in complete freedom with their group or family in a remote area of Gabon's forest. Our cameras have highlighted a very particular behaviour among chimpanzees in the Nyonié region and resulted in a scientific publication, "Reflections in rainforest mirrors facilitate behavioral observations of wild chimpanzees Primates n°58 2017-01". On our two following videos this behavior is filmed: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqWweJaCp7ZkaKc (Rump-Rump Rubbing in Chimpanzees = anti-stress effect? A social behavior ever observed previously) and kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqfPmoekf5yCotE (scared chimps reassure themselves with pseudo-copulation and rump-to-rump contacts front of mirror). This is how, incidentally in wild animals, we discovered and became interested in their self-recognition in our large mirrors. Unnecessary distress on the animal. What purpose was this for?
@michellehughes896
@michellehughes896 2 жыл бұрын
A study of self recognition and perhaps to see the way chimps communicate in a territorial conflict without having non native chimps present. Its is a lot less cruel than introducing a strange chimp into their area to watch them fight. After the initial reactions here there is no more damage done. They will see the reflections as non threatening as the conflict could not escalate. As you see after the big males attacked the mirror they left pretty quickly as they realised that the image could not harm them.

Your absolutely insane… almost literally. Do you know what it does for their understanding and development.. the ability to see yourself as you are… instead of the fact, you are the center of the universe and everyones in ur world… the clicking in the brain… imagine leaving this there for 10 years… and then at the end of 10 years… monitor the brain development differences between the life of a group of monkey that have never seen a mirror? This could lead to monkeys covering up their visually unpleasing areas to look more attractive for mates… others utilizing the information of what they look like when they portray emotions … like aggression… and connecting the idea of the brain and physical movements , conscious, subconscious. Until this video i slept on the invention of the mirror… n what it could do for an entire species of animal that dont think philosophically… Or sociologically. The idea of the mirror, without having someone their to show you its ok.. and confirming its you…. Will make other observations that a mirror causes to be realized about yourself click in your thoughts for a long time… like religion… just instead of a mirror reflection of you.. its the physical life & the after life.. im blowing my own mind as i type this so excuse the erratic grammar. But damn… this single action of introducing monkeys to themselves technically could lead to an infinate amount of possibilities and progressions.. your just mad you didnt do it first. And a scientist dreams of finding a test that can generate a comfortable living for him and his family with little or less effort that has purpose. And honestly, this guy xavier hit the nail on the head in my eyes..
