Dull, dirty or loose blade all contribute to wavy cuts. A cursory look at a blade won't tell if it's dull. You have to inspect the blade tip and it should be sharp enough to just about prick your finger. A dull blade tip will be just a tiny bit rounded. A little magnifying glass would help see just what I mean by that. I saw with a Woodmizer LT40 and I've found that after about five hrs. of sawing, the blade needs to be changed, a little sooner for really hard woods and a little longer for soft woods. Also, any dirt on the log will quickly dull a blade. Your excavator will be a huge help keeping your logs clean and that cradle log mover you showed in a previous video will help too. I used a LOG WIZARD which attaches to the end of a chainsaw to clean off dirt before I installed a debarker. Also, with experience you can tell by engine lug how dull your blade is getting.

You are so right about the dirt and everything else. I worked at a cedar mill for awhile in the File Shop. When the blades were done sharpening they were to sharp to touch the teeth bare handed.
@plainandsimple1
@plainandsimple1 2 жыл бұрын
i just came here to say that. if everything is tight, its a dull blade not cutting and as you're pushing it forces the blade to almost lean forward and backward causing it to dive and swoop.

The half in boards can be used to make bird owl and wood duck houses. There are many plans on you tube. Plus he gives you something to do on cold rainy days. I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and I have over 150 bluebird houses out. These boxes produce about 1000 birds a year

That is one pretty piece of wood... One thing about all band saws, it's not just the dullness, it's really that you have to push the blade thru with more force and it is the pushing too hard that really makes it cut crooked. When you push against the flat blade it has to twist, even if it is not running. Push the blade forward, let it do the cutting, and you will get better results. Same with a chainsaw, as you likely know. It does the cutting with just the weight of the saw if it's properly sharpened, there's no need to saw like a knife or even teeter totter like we all seem to do, just hold it firm and let it do the work. If you need to put pressure on it, it's dull.

It's nice to see someone else with an EZ Boardwalk mill. I've owned the standard size , 30? , EZ Boardwalk mill for 4 years. It's been bulletproof. Originally I fretted about getting the smaller mill but in hindsight it was a great purchase. Large logs on a large mill require large equipment to handle it all. Without investing in larger equipment the standard mill is as big as my equipment can handle. I enjoy your informative videos. Nice work 👍🏻

Wow that is timely! Now I know the answer to my previous inquiry regarding footings for your saw mill. You are 100% correct, the Hitachi was a welcome addition! It’s totally amazing how you were able to reduce that white oak tree trunk to usable lumber. I’m assuming you might be using that on the garage addition as well? Maybe you and Doug should do a channel together and call it a AD (80) Acres. I think you guys could have a killer channel as a team in addition to your own channel. Keep the great coming and stay safe. All the best to you and Doug and your respective families!

2:58 Can you hear me yelling? You got all those power tools & you decide to use a ratchet to install them lag bolts. Augh.... LOL 4:16 That looks a bit tippy. If they get any heavier, than you might have to use the log arch. 8:54 Tighten a new blade every 20' of cutting. Then every 100'. Water is cheap, keep that blade well lubricated. Wash all the cuttings away. Move the blade guides in, close to the log. Also, make sure blade is true to the deck. Not angled up or down. Use a wider blade with less teeth for bigger logs. Less teeth engaging equals less power to push the cut. Too many teeth just fill up with material also. Too many teeth also slows the feed rate, which dulls the blade.

I was wrong about the solar kilns dry time seven weeks not days. Still think it’s a good investment though your going to want to look around for the best plan build. I liked the clear roofs with solar panel fans at the top to force air down through the stack, insulated walls to retain heat and floor installation. A black trap hung just under the top fans to guide air internally down and through the stack, I would install two exit fans low on the opening doors in the rear vents move air flow out. The back exterior doors would open from the middle and be wide enough to load the dry stacked lumber with the tractor. A second set of solar panels could be set on the side to run a dehumidifier set up in the kiln to speed drying times. All solar run you have the field for it. Might even be able to build it with the lumber you mill the fans and insulation and solar panels and clear roofing would be your major costs? Just a investment thought. The fans would need screens for keeping bugs out. The kiln also kills beetle eggs due to the heat involved.

that’s awesome! i seen some guys over here that sell firewood and have sawmills like you and morgan and the thing i noticed is they just have piles of milled up slabs and lumber and it just sits there, i want to actually see someone buy at least a piece, for some reason i don’t think it’s that desirable. if your thinking of changing that thumb out go check out AMI attachments they make a few nice style thumbs, but it’s gonna be expensive, but at least you only need the thumb and nothing else.

Hey Adam, great video. I know you've been waiting to tackle that huge oak log! Right course of action with changing the blade. A couple of good signs that the blade needs changing is the wavy cuts and you also feel like you have to push harder and harder to make the cut. You felt and saw the difference that the new blade made. Beautiful oak slabs and great work! I'm glad you have the mini-ex and can save your back rolling logs! Thanks for bringing us along.

From my past experience with owning a few different brands of bandsaw mills, usually the manufacturer doesn’t ship the mill with the same quality of blade installed as the replacements are. Both of my previous mills were shipped with blades that were NOT hardened/carbide steel, much shorter cutting life then the replacements. A dull blade is usually almost always the issue from my experience, you can’t beat a fresh one. Also dependant on species most frequently milled you can choose hardwood/softwood replacements. Cheers!

I’m like 3 minutes into it and you have to get a set of socket drivers. I bought a DeWalt 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch at Lowe’s for $10. Just put them in the drill and pop on the socket. It’s going to save you so much time and be so much easier. I just got them about 6 months ago and was kicking myself for not getting them sooner. Best $10 you can spend.

Hi Adam. Great sawmill setup. But I have to say that when your excavator went into auto idle that was very dangerous when the jaw dropped the log. Very lucky no one was wondering near the log or doing something near the machine. They could have been seriously hurt. You should get that checked out. Could be a problem with a non return valve or the hydraulic pump.
