Mitch Murray wrote how do you do it. Mitch Mitchell was mostly a child actor and Joe Meek drummer in ‘63.

Kenny Lynch's recording of Misery came before the Beatles recording, so they were covering him, not the other way around. Also, the Shadows recorded Love Me Do in late 1962, so that was actually the first cover of the Beatles.

@@willzimjohn I misidentified the group. It was The Sparrows, not the Shadows. It was part of an EP on the Cannon label in November, 1962. This comes from the Mark Lewisohn biography, All These Years / Tune In / Special Extended Edition, p. 1505. It was the first cover of the Beatles.

@@willzimjohn Could you give me examples of "cover version" being used in music industry publications or books to refer to a first recording of a song by someone other than the COMPOSER, when that composer had not yet recorded the song? I don't think I've ever seen it used that way, and that would be odd. Among other things it would mean that MOST songs are "cover versions". Historically, most popular songs are first recorded by someone other than the composer. In fact, most are never recorded by the composer. Pop composers who were also performers weren't the norm in the popular music industry until ... well, until the Beatles.

It's a Lennon and McCartney song. An artist can't cover a song they've written.
