Never new what was in cut puddy, so this was great. I've cut paste, and on wounds that were larger I added corn starch to thicken it. I was messy, but it worked.

So cool! The only thing I would say, is to warm the pan only enough to melt the beeswax, rather than boiling. Partly to reduce the fire risk (beeswax makes lovely candles, after all!), but also to limit any deactivation of the ingredients due to heat. Not sure that there would be much other than the essential oil, though. Might just add this to the list of DIY jobs I have!!

Thank you for this tip! It all stayed relatively cool and didn't bubble until I added the wood glue which was interesting! Maybe it has a low "bubble point" 😂 I hope yours goes well for you!

Definitely agree that self made is best, you know exactly what's in it. I have honey bees and have never used chemicals to treat for varroa mites, I use a blend of essential oils in sugar syrup twice a year and never had varroa. I'm about 20 miles from Greenwood Bonsai, so off to have a rummage through their starter seedlings tomorrow, if I can wait that long! Well done with all you're doing.

Hey great recipe for cut putty. Looking forward to trying it. As for brown color, your cinnamon should provide you a nice brown hue? And leave out the activated carbon, and sub-in diatomaceous earth which is typically white or tan. The only other item I might add at the very end after it’s off the heat would be a couple tables spoons of rooting hormone powder, that will give healing a boost. As for the stretch test, mineral oil or caster oil should give you that stretching your seeking. Good luck.

Hey Kyle! The Cinnamon did not give me the dark brown that I wanted but from recent tests, a mix of Iron oxide and coca powder has done the trick! If you are interested I am currently in the process of setting up the Notion Bonsai online store! My putty with an improved recipe will be available on there with included IBA! - 2 colors grey and brown! Thank you for the suggestion of adding more flexibility! With each batch I make it should get better and better!

You inspired me to have ago. I wanted to use all natural stuff, so I left out the wood glue and plumbers mate, but had some potters clay (40g) and a 1/2 teaspoon of xanthan gum I had in the larder for my vegan cakes, like a gluten/egg substitute. Also instead of vaseline I used 1 Tbs coconut oil melted, along with 1 Tbs boiled linseed oil. I made the recipe in two parts: pt 1- an emulsion part in a blender (adding 100ml of water to mix with oil with the lecithin emulsifier and some of the powder ingredients). Pt 2- Melted wax in a ban -marie ( glass bowl in saucepan of water), this is how candle hobbyists work safe with wax, you don't want wax to reach flashpoint!) powdered the resin into this with cinnamon and powdered BBQ wood charcoal for frugality. I didn't find any neem oil but my Indian grocers had powdered leaf, this also took place of matcha which was a bit expensive. I also added turmeric with the sulphur for its anti microbial/fungicidal properties and also tea tree oil. Poor emulsion into wax and stir with silicone spatular for a bit to reduced some of the water. Colour is a nice dark green, consistency seems nice. next batch I will play with the amounts of clay and gum. thanks for the inspiration! Paul

Mix your powders together in dry state and pass it through a sieve to remove clumps, that should make it easier to get a homogenous mix

Really cool, I love self-made things as well. For colouring, I guess just natural colouring used in food should work as well, although I'm not sure if the colour might not fade out when exposed to sun and rain. That might depend on the specific colouring used.

Hey thanks!! I experimented with food coloring off camera and found that it would always come off in my hands and stain them! I wish this would work because then we could use multiple colors to adjust it to all shades even green!

Traditional window glazing and plumbers putty is simply boiled linseed oil mixed with diatomaceous earth, it might not be a bad base, and you could experiment with just adding the other active ingredients you want directly to it! Also, traditional linoleum is pine resin and linseed oil...so over time that combination will form a natural plastic...which may or may not be what you want. Just some thoughts from another Adam, lol!

Great!! But I feel it's a bit on the overkill side... For example, activated charcoal works as an adsorbent, so there's always the possibility that most of the compounds you add end trapped in the charcoal... I have been wondering about the how-to of cut putty for a while... Using plumber's putty sounds like a great idea, maybe just the putty, adding 1-2 antimicrobial additives? I was also wondering about using playdough as an starting point, maybe just adding Neem oil instead of regular oil? Anyway, I love this channel and your work!! 😊

I would say it is definitely cheaper in the long run! My plan is to sell this or an improved recipe of my own when I eventually open an online Notion Bonsai store! If I were to estimate I would say about £30 in total? and that makes like 500+ grams of putty.... where from commercial brands it is roughly £20 - £25 for a 160g tub!

This depends on how much time you have. From using both I would definitely say that homemade putty is a lot higher quality. If you do not have time to make it. It is available on my store at notionbonsai.com I have had more time to refine the recipe. I have now added a growth hormone for faster healing too!

Just a thought I wouldn’t think the wood glue is going to have any benefits because of the amount of different oils in the mix , typically you have have clean surfaces for wood glue …ie no oil. Glue as I understand it is going to have no benefit what so ever is my thinking, how ever the wax in it will tie it all together I think. Lesser ingredients for my liking but you do have some very good ones in there for sure.👍
