one side note that’s interesting to me - i became clean after heavy drug use for 35 years i’ve been clean for 2 years now first time in my life - during my hideous withdrawal which lasted about 6 months ( not the acute withdrawal the post nightmarish prolonged chronic withdrawal that i wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy) i read his book often about getting through and becoming sober - who suggested this book to me ? an AA speaker who had been clean for 25 years and said Russel Brands book was one of the better books about getting clean that he’d read - and it was it was REAL and it comforted me during some of the worst panic attacks I wish to never be familiar with again

Congratulations on becoming clean. That is a huge hurdle, and you're one of the few that made it. My daughter has been an addict since she was in her teens. She's 33. She has tried and failed numerous times to become clean. She's homeless now, I have custody of her daughter who is five. I haven't talked to her in months, it breaks my heart. I tried so hard to help her, I got her an apartment, got her jobs, ended up having to pay for her rent for some of the time, then ended up having to take her daughter, I often thought. Is this ever going to end?!. I had to step back and let her fall flat on her face and still she has not gotten clean. Some people just can't do it but as long as she's breathing there is hope. I don't know how your parents were, or the people that you loved were as far as codependent, but I was really doing the wrong thing by thinking I was helping her. But on the other hand I wanted her to have a chance. It just didn't work. Again, congratulations! I hope you never go back to that crap. I hope you take that addiction and turn it into an addiction of helping other people or speaking to other ppl! I wish you all the best in the years to come and hope you can pack a lot into these sober years of your life.

I normally agree with Dr Grande's assessments, but I've been following Brand for the last year or so. He does use some hyperbole and might have opinions that are a bit radical, but I definitely don't agree that his takes are "incoherent" or "nonsensical." He actually cites news stories and publishers and researchers when he addresses issues and he seems quite thoughtful and careful to state that his opinions are just opinions, and he's been very critical of both the left and the right when it comes to policy and governance. He's an eccentric and flamboyant character, and that's off-putting to a lot of people, but I think he's being unfairly criticized here. I don't think he plays the victim, and I don't think he suggests others should either. He's been very open about his personal shortcomings and poor decision-making when it comes to his past promiscuity and substance abuse, and he uses those experiences to warn others to avoid going down that path. He probably is somewhat narcissistic (like nearly every content creator on KZbin) and he seems boisterous and extraverted, but he also seems genuine and someone who struggles to know the truth, and never claims to his viewers to have all the answers. One of his tag lines, in fact, is, "That's just what I think. You tell me what you think." I don't think there's anything disingenuous about that.

I've watched Brand's KZbin before. While the titles are clickbait conspiracy theorist stuff, he will cite reputable investigative journalists and often mock ridiculous, unevidenced claims, (like that recent UFO alien guy). For me these allegations are suspect as they've only appeared after there's been a push to brand Brand as "far-right", (despite his long history of opposing the Torys and his praise of people like Jeremy Corbyn). If there aren't a huge number of further accusers coming forward, or any form of physical evidence the accusers have even met the man, it's fair to say it's a further smear campaign.
@NickKautz Жыл бұрын
Russell Brand is not at all a conspiracy theorist. His whole show is about following rational thought to logical conclusions. Journalists often fail to do this and lead people to false conclusions, who then believe the more probable conclusions are a conspiracy. It's easy to debunk the claims against Russell. If he did what was alleged, where are his efforts to keep the women silent? No texts. No testimony from the women. Nothing. No one would commit those acts without either pleading or threatening to keep them quiet, especially at the peak of one's social status. To jeapordize that position with the alleged misconduct when you could find whatever you want consentually, is highly unlikely. The journalists know how to manipulate, they probably reframed how these women view their own experiences, just so they could use them in the story.

This might be one of the rare instances where Dr. Grande's personal biases might have shown through. I've never seen Russell in a movie, nor his standup, so I can't comment. But I do think that Dr. Grande's takes on Russell's addiction recovery and conspiracy theories were unfair. Russel may have, at one time, held immature beliefs about addiction and looked to blame the substances. But in the last few years, I've seen a very mature stance on addiction from him. He seems genuinely humbled, balanced, and engaged in spreading love. As far as "conspiracies" and "lack of talent" go, "speaking nonsense", I would say that is also unfair. His fact finding videos are very concise, persuasive, and thorough. He shows all of his sources and doesn't miss-represent or distort them, and honestly, seems to have less bias and distortion in finding the truth, than what I saw from Dr. Grande in this video. Does he also make conspiracy videos? Maybe, I haven't watched enough of his videos to know. But when he goes on Bill Maher and rattles of pages of stats that go against mainstream narrative, this to me can only be described as courageous.

that´s not how that works, it´s this kind of simplistic thinking that just makes you look stupid. there´s no such thing as "the government" or "the media" there are only people making claims. you evaluate those claims on their own merits regardless of who says them. sure you can adjust your priors by the information you have about the person making the claim, but that´s only one small aspect of figuring out what´s true or not. take a perpetual liar like trump for example. on the whole he´s full of shit, most of the time. but that doesn´t mean, he can´t also speak the truth by accident. also the other way around; just because newton also believed in spirits and fairies and alchemy, doesn´t mean that the principia wasn´t a monumental intellectual achivement that certainly pushed humanity a bit forward.

Or they don’t understand scientists are individuals with a passion for discovering what is true, and when they reach an overwhelming consensus, they are almost always correct. CTs make problems in society worse by allowing themselves to be easily misdirected into blaming groups who are not the actual problem & typically embrace far right positions instead. So true with media, where folks like Murdoch own multinational News empires which push anti-government and anti-democratic nonsense and anti-journalism because it results in voting patterns that helps Murdoch accumulate more wealth and power. So CTs rail against news sources that do not share their learned biases.

Basically those people who put ego before honest objectivity. Normally they won't have other means of receiving attention, such as talent or insights. So decide to just not shut about certain events instead. This isn’t even close to the Johnny Depp case. Depp had one accuser who was clearly mentally unwell herself. And plenty of other women came forward to defend Depp. Russell admits he was a heroin addicted, sex addicted, mentally unwell Hollywood star. There are many accusations from many women. There are at least two cases where it is documented that women immediately were treated at rape centers after seeing Russell. There are text messages where one alleged victim literally said “When I said no, I meant no”. Russell responded with an apology. Can you think of one scenario where a girl you had consensual sex with would say that and you respond with an apology? What could he possibly be apologizing for, if not refusing to respect her saying “No”? Just because the dude has a KZbin channel you like now doesn’t mean he wasn’t a total piece of shit a decade ago. Also I’m not sure I understand mentioning Spacey. Did allegations towards him turn out to be false or something?

Yes, indeed, and when did things change so much that people can no longer repent and reform themselves and try to redeem their past transgressions? He has certainly been trying to do that. Dr. Grande did not research his subject with any kind of depth or he would have discovered that. Lately, it appears that Grande is driven to produce commentary on current trendy topics so quickly and in a way that he thinks of as cleverly that he often loses the objectivity a true therapist or analyst needs to have. If he cannot give the time and thought to research a subject well, he needs not to opine because it's someone's life he is dealing with.

It’s impossible to overstate how big ‘Big Brother’s Big Mouth’ was. Reality television was still fresh then and he added a level on top with so much manic energy but also the gift of the gab. I still think of that having been his main thing. I didn’t actually know that he had a KZbin channel or particularly believed in conspiracy theories. I met him a year or so ago. I was at an anti-fur protest in Mayfair and he just suddenly crossed the street to talk to us. Then a mentally ill woman interrupted to beg for money and he took her over to his car to give her some.

I wrote that at the beginning. I am not defending his bad behaviour in any way and he may well be guilty of the sex crimes BUT you haven’t characterized him fairly. Of course a lot of it is loud personality, but he is funny and quick-witted, and despite the descent into conspiracy theories you’ve described has intellect and insight. Taking drugs to begin with is a “choice,” but no addiction is not any type of choice and not a single person expects to become nor wants to become an addict. I honestly hate when people with no skin in the game or any experience with actual addiction speak on the topic so matter of fact. As someone who works with addicts for a living, some of what you said was correct but much of it was behind a very clear curtain of ignorance imo. That’s not anyone’s fault because addiction is way too complex to ever fully understand unless you have first hand experience yourself. Russell Brand is well respected for his journey from addiction and promiscuity to stable family man. Brand has always been honest about his journey and helped many others with his book. He has owned and taken responsibility for his addiction and behaviour and has grown up, and changed. In the U.K. Brand has a strong following on his KZbin channel. And Brand was already a household name in the country back in the early 2000's . Brand does not 'make up' KZbin content to make himself feel useful or good, he genuinely wants to bring information that is in the public interest to the public, he researches and gives his audience verifiable sources. Brand encourages debate. Brand is operating in the void left by MSM omission and lies, MSM is a mouthpiece for government and private interests, and people know that. Brand may be loud, or intense, he may use long words and humour that is beyond the understanding of some, but he uses his platform for the benefit of people who know that the mainstream narrative is questionable . Where is the informed debate in the MSM? The accusations against Brand are unsubstantiated. The police have not been informed of any complaints, no one has given statements to the police SO...Due process has not been followed regarding Brand being a sexual criminal. And a trial by media has ensued. Which is abhorrent. Brand us being burnt at the stake like the witches of old, and it is shameful that you also believe in this backwards pitch-fork bastardisation of justice.

This is just garbage. Imagine if people could just walk away from serious, life destroying crimes by just claiming they're were in a bad place then, but they're all better now and look how much good I'm doing now. People don't get to choose their preferred punishments for the wrongs they do to others. Neither can they "good deed" their way out of proper accountability. Also, you should read up about why rape and sexual assault are severely under-reporting crimes. Very often, victims feel helpless when faced with a perpetrator who has money and power while they have neither. Often they can't accept what happened to them and very often they don't tell others becuase they blame themselves. You don't know the women who accused him or their stories, so quit trying to smear them and their motives At least one victim consulted a rape crisis centre immediately after the alleged rape, so trying to claim these are just baseless accusations with no evidence shows exactly where your bias lies.

If women spoke up about Brand in two years' time, or when he's in his 80s, or two years ago, or six years ago, there'd be people like you saying 'why now?' Who cares why now? If he did these things, what the hell are you worried about the timing for? Why aren't you worried about whether or not the accusations by multiple women are true? People in TV and especially on the comedy circuits have been warning each other about him *for years* now. But it's not that easy to come out and take on such a powerful guy with such powerful allies and huge resources and a massive loyal fanbase. Rape almost never even gets to trial. If it does, it's a deeply damaging experience for the victims, no matter what happens. Brand was accused of being a predator to his face by comedian Katherine Ryan, on a 'mainstream' TV show, multiple times, in 2018. Five years ago. She called him out. None of that footage was allowed to air, for whatever reason. If what's alleged is true, that Brand *hasn't* been very transparent about his past. He's been transparent about only that which he thinks won't harm him. Or won't harm him too much, or in a lasting way. Proven sex offenders have done the same. So it's silly to lean on that at this stage. Having BBC cars pick up a 16-year-old from school for sex is a bad look, no? Or the fact that, for years and years, it's been believed on the comedy circuit that Brand is a predator. Female comics warned each other about him, telling each other to stay clear. The same with runners on TV etc. They were afraid to be on their own with him. None of this proves he's guilty of what he's accused of. But man, people sure are giving him massive benefit of the doubt, based not on innocent til proven guilty but on the exact kind of conspiracy thinking he promotes. The guy is himself as mainstream as they come. A bestselling author with books in chain stores all over the world. He's in Hollywood movies. Not art-house underground European movies. He makes his fantastic living on the biggest platform in the world and gets his money from advertisers and giant companies. And the only reason he's no onger working for the BBC or C4 to begin with is he got himself kicked off for his awful, nasty, egotistical, cruel, unhinged behaviour. This is the guy who's outside the mainstream, smashing the agenda of the normies? The stuff he peddles is ultra lucrative with a giant worldwide audience. If it wasn't he wouldn't be peddling it. There's a difference between being a truth-teller like John Pilger or someone like that, a tough investigative journalist, and someone going Hmm, you have a good point there, known liar and obvious, dangerous bullshitter Tucker Carlson... please do go on! The advertising dollars and the money from our massive corporate backers is rightly gushing in! Wahey! These fools are loving it! (Not that Brand would say that aloud, obviously. Ooof you've really missed the mark with this one good sir 😢 You usually research so well, but you have let us down here Grande. His book 'recovery from addiction' is a biography about all the ways he takes responsibility for his actions surrounding drugs. I think you're misconstruing his message that we treat addicts so cruelly in society, which we do. Secondly, he doesn't make conspiracy videos, he reports 'true news', where he researches the facts behind the headlines and tries to give you a more well rounded and non-propgandafied picture of evidence, so that you can decide what you think, rather than being told what to think. Absolutely no lizard people! (Well maybe ironically, you really have to watch his stuff Grande, he's hilarious!). Something else you got wrong: he's a HUGE celebrity in the UK. He was even more famous around ten years ago when he was on tv, his current youtube channel is quite niche comparitively- Everyone in the uk knows who he is, only some people know about his youtube channel. You got this very wrong, I urge you to read his book and watch some of his videos. He well known for his intelligence, sense of humour, philanthropy, very quick witt, excellent communication skills and vast vocab. He also, connects with his fans via this community he's made on youtube- very down to earth compared to other big celebs! Very grandiose yes, but thats his thing and always has been, he jokes about it all the time. When I google him at the moment, the press really doesn't reflect what the public seem to be saying in polls and on Twitter (X), people are really supporting him and believe this trial by social media is bull. As far as my opinion, I don't doubt that we all did thing 15 years ago that would be totally unacceptable now and would paint us to be monsters, but as for rape? Im not so sure. Why not go to the police? Why thousands of consensual acts but only 1 rape (don't these things usually come with a pattern of behaviors?)? Why now and not the last 17 years? Anonymous women being paid, but no police reports? It is strange. Unfortunately it will likely not go to trial and we may never know the truth. Grande I usually love your stuff, but sir you got this so wrong im afraid. It's irrelevant if Brand didn't assault woman X or didn't abuse woman Y. If someone commits one rape in their entire life they're a rapist. They could be impeccable in every other relationship and no one on earth besides their single, one-time victim would know what they'd done. Everyone else would say - well, he never raped *me* . You don't even know what the other women said. They might even have refused to speak publicly despite being victims of Brand. Or they might have been false leads. What difference does it make - in any way - that some women weren't assaulted if the claims of the four who *did* go on record are true? I was really surprised with his stance. I think Dr Grande just read articles about Russel and took it all at face value, he never actually listened to what he has to say. Cause stuff Russel says isn't at all some crazy conspiracy theory, it's just going into detail about the simple and very concrete fact that the government is not your friend

What would you like us to say instead? "Claims that don't appear to be supported by sufficient evidence to be believed, but that are believed strongly nevertheless"? That's basically what we mean. One claim by Brand was that the Jan 6th incident in the US was staged by the Democrats. He doesn't have any evidence supporting that. He's having to ignore the fact that many people have now been convicted and all of them seem to have been real MAGA supporters. There's no reason to believe it, but yet he still claims it to be true. So shall I call him "a purveyor of highly dubious claims"? How about that?

You're upset because of the cognitive dissonance. Russell Brand is a great marketer. He's a shill antivaxxer for one. Whey would an accredited doctor like Dr. Grande entertain moronic antivaxxers? I actually work in pharmaceuticals, and I know that the industry is poisonous. That said, the drugs that we produce do work... It's people like Russell who have no experience in biotech, who literally cause the deaths of innocent people when he discourages people from taking life saving medicine. I have bipolar disorder and this is something people are unaware of. If someone with bipolar disorder smokes weed it can cause immense depression and lead to psychosis. Which means you can literally go insane. This isn’t considered factual evidence since there aren’t that many samples for these studies, however, there is enough evidence for this link. I can say from my personal experience with marijuana it does cause immense depression, paranoia, and other actions. In fact, I sometimes get into immense rage when consuming marijuana. I don’t participate with marijuana anymore. And luckily, I only participated with this stuff in the safety of my own home, and only around very close friends. If you have bipolar disorder avoid anything that alters your mind and is not prescribed. Bipolar disorder is extremely difficult to live with and I know people that suffer from it have big hearts. Much love to anyone suffering from mental illness as well. I am not excusing the possible accusations based on his condition but I felt it to be important to share.
