If you liked the disorganized and messy background well the good news is that's it's pretty easy to recreate. While Culture books don't need to be read in order Player of Games tends to be seen as the better introduction to that universe if you're able to get your hands on that before starting Use of Weapons.

I used to love the tv-show based on Flashforward! Also, I am reading Matilda right now for the first time since I was a kid and I am loving it. I’m actually listening to the audiobook read by Kate Winslet and it is one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to 😍

I have Flashforward but have not read it. There was a series made on it years ago which was cool. I've read some of his other work and it was good. I also collect the sf masterworks yellow spine editions. love it

Use of Weapons is actually book 3 in the Culture series (Player of Games is 2nd). You don’t technically have to read them in publication order but I recommend it. He does a lot of world building in each book that helps to better define the universe for other books. Definitely recommend the series overall! :)
@benjaminsparrow80165 жыл бұрын
The Ancillary books are great. I really loved them. Yeah, you can read the Culture books in whatever order. I read the first three in order and kinda wish I hadn't. The first book is pretty weak while the next two are better.

Fair warning: Artemis Fowl is a Disney movie that was pushed back to next year. So the clock is ticking... TICK TICK TICK TICK. I also acquired the Imperial Radch trilogy via albris last year. I have not had a chance to read it. How I'll need to. Glad you are speaking of the joys of used books especially via library sales. Some of my William Gibson novels came from libraries in my home state (NY). Just from the other side... It's a big state, just not as large as most of those Canadian Provinces.

Love the shirt! 😀 'The Female Man' sounds interesting. I bought quite a few books this month because I haven't been able to for a few months: Lock Every Door + The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager, The Turn of The Key by Ruth Ware, The Missing Years by Lexie Elliott, The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern, Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend, Inspection + A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman, All Systems Red by Martha Wells, and lastly 3 SF Masterworks books. A ton of books as you can tell! 😄

Oh, I love Use of Weapons. It's probably my favourite Ian M. Banks, but it might not be the most accessible one. I'm not sure I'd call it hard scifi, more like character based space opera. Same goes for Ancilliary Justice (which is great too but took some time getting into for me). :-)

I am, needless to say, very jealous of your haul.)

I think I've seen that Ancilliary Justice on facebook before. So stoked you're reading Artemis Fowl! I think its criminally unknown and is seriously on par with/if not better than the Harry Potter series, It has some flaws (talkin about the series as a whole) but is overall amazing, have'nt read it in awhile, but I feel like it has staying power just like Harry Potter, I can read it at any age. Whoa! Matlida was based on a Roald Dahl book!??!?

I wouldn't consider the Ancillary series to be hard sci-fi at all really, it's very character focused, with a lot of exploration of society, gender, and what it means to be a person and an individual. It's a really fantastic series, and I hope you enjoy it! :)

Ancillary Justice is definitely one of my favourite sci-fi books, but be prepared.. it is a bit odd & out there. The prose is kinda experimental, and the book deals with linguistics, imperialism and, obviously, AI. I wouldn't describe it as a space-opera, I feel that might give you the wrong expectations and you'll end up disappointed :s

I highly highly don't recommend anyone to start the Culture series with Use of Weapons despite being my favorite. The book has a very... let's say peculiar structure that it's a little hard to get into. I would suggest to start with The Player of Games. It's one of the best in the series, a very good introduction to the Culture series and it's one of the shortest so it's not a big investiment for a beginner to the Culture universe.
